The computer used to control the Patriot missile is based on a 1970s design and uses 24-bit arithmetic. Faced with implementing a new system quickly, the Chaparral GIS Team knew it had the tools in place to create a complete monitoring system. The one challenge was finding a cost-effective way of notifying lease operators and engineers on the event. The team quickly identified Twilio as the SMS and voice notification tool of choice. With excellent documentation and examples on the Safe website, ChapGIS was able to implement a new system within days. The core system was built completely using FME and models published to the companies FME Server. The workflows run every 5 – 10 minutes and capture the most recent seismic data from both the OGS and USGS. If an event is detected within a well buffer, notifications are sent to the correct personnel responsible for the area. The initial system was built and operational within 3 days with only minor modifications being made over the past year.
The overall system was a huge success for the organization and saved significant dollars by purchasing an outside product to perform the monitoring. It also helped showcase how FME can be used to build rapid GIS applications with an easy to upgrade path.

5th Power Grid Model Meet-up
It is with great pleasure that we extend to you an invitation to the 5th Power Grid Model Meet-up, scheduled for 6th June 2024. This event will adopt a hybrid format, allowing participants to join us either through an online Mircosoft Teams session or in person at TU/e located at Den Dolech 2, Eindhoven, Netherlands. The meet-up will be hosted by Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), a research university specializing in engineering science & technology.
Power Grid Model
The global energy transition is placing new and unprecedented demands on Distribution System Operators (DSOs). Alongside upgrades to grid capacity, processes such as digitization, capacity optimization, and congestion management are becoming vital for delivering reliable services.
Power Grid Model is an open source project from Linux Foundation Energy and provides a calculation engine that is increasingly essential for DSOs. It offers a standards-based foundation enabling real-time power systems analysis, simulations of electrical power grids, and sophisticated what-if analysis. In addition, it enables in-depth studies and analysis of the electrical power grid’s behavior and performance. This comprehensive model incorporates essential factors such as power generation capacity, electrical losses, voltage levels, power flows, and system stability.
Power Grid Model is currently being applied in a wide variety of use cases, including grid planning, expansion, reliability, and congestion studies. It can also help in analyzing the impact of renewable energy integration, assessing the effects of disturbances or faults, and developing strategies for grid control and optimization.

- 1. The Dhahram Patriot Missile Failure
- 2. Introduction •Its initial purpose was as an anti-aircraft system, but it quickly became used as anti-tactile ballistic missiles. •The Patriot Missile system consists of an advanced radar system and an anti- ballistic missile. •The system consists of 4 functions: –Communications, –Command and Control, –Radar surveillance –Missile guidance.

When it was developed and the cost of it... ● Full-scale development of the system began in 1976. ● And it was deployed in 1984. ● Patriot was used initially as an anti-aircraft system, but during 1988, it was upgraded to provide limited capability against tactical ballistic missiles. ● And Talking about the unit cost,it over 2 million dollars.

What is the purpose ● The Persian Gulf War was the first usage of the Patriot missile system to shoot down ballistic missiles as opposed to only aircraft. ● It was used 40 times to shoot down missiles, primarily Scud or Al Hussein short range ballistic missiles. ● The first engagement, which was initially reported as successful, occurred on January 18, 1991.
- 5. What Was The Failure The cause was an inaccurate calculation of computer arithmetic errors. A small timing error in the system’s clock accumulated to the point that after 14 hours, the tracking system was no longer accurate.In the Dhahran attack, the system had been operating for more than 100 hours. The software truncated the 24-bit numbers when converting to binary This truncation error grew the longer the system ran.
- 6. Cost of Failure Because the system had been on so long, the resulting inaccuracy in the time calculation caused the range gate to shift so much that the system could not track the incoming Scud. Consequently, Alpha Battery did not engage the Scud, which then struck an Army barracks and killed 28 American soldiers. Around 100 people were injured.
