This document provides guidelines for students completing the portfolio component of the Internal Assessment for Communication Studies. The portfolio consists of three sections - a general introduction, a reflective section, and an analytical section. The general introduction identifies the theme and purpose and explains the student's choice. The reflective section is an original piece of prose, poetry, or drama reflecting the theme. The analytical section critically analyzes the reflective piece based on two communication elements. The portfolio concludes with a conclusion, bibliography, and appendix.

6. THE GENERAL INTRODUCTION - 1
In the Introduction, you must:
 State/identify theme that you have chosen.
Be specific. You may define key terms
and/or provide background information about
the topic.
 Explain the purpose of the Internal
Assessment.

7. THE GENERAL INTRODUCTION - 2
 Provide reasons for your choice of
theme/area of study. This reason should be
related to your career goals, personal
interest/experience and your academic
interests.

8. THE GENERAL INTRODUCTION - 3
 Show how the theme will be reflected in the
three different sections of portfolio. This
should show what will be done in the three
sections, based on the theme.

9. THE PREFACE - 1
 Identify the reflective piece by genre and title.
 Briefly summarize the piece in one or two
sentences.

10. THE PREFACE - 2
 Identify the audience for whom piece is
intended and say why this choice of medium
is appropriate. Say why it is suited to the
age, sex and background (educational,
cultural, socio-economic, sociolinguistic, etc)
of this audience.

11. THE PREFACE - 3
 State the purpose of writing the piece.
 Explain the situation/context in which this
piece will be presented. Identify the channels
that will be used to get the message across.
Will audio visual aids be used?

12. THE PREFACE - 4
 You may explain reasons behind features
such as font size, graphics/images used, etc.

13. THE REFLECTION - 1
 The reflection should be your ORIGINAL
piece.
 It should cover one of the three main literary
genres: PROSE, POETRY or DRAMA.
 It must reflect the theme of the Internal
Assessment.

14. THE REFLECTION - 2
 It should include the four elements for
language analysis:
1. Dialectal variations
2. Registers
3. Attitudes to language
4. Communicative behaviours (non-verbal
communication)

15. THE REFLECTION - 3
 It should follow the conventions of the genre
you are using. Therefore, you should refer to
your CSEC English A and English B for the
conventions of Poetry, Prose or Drama.

16. THE ANALYSIS - 1
This is a critical analysis of your reflection
based on TWO of the following:
1. Dialectal variations
2. Registers
3. Attitudes to language
4. Communicative behaviours

17. THE ANALYSIS - 2
Your analysis is an ESSAY. Therefore, it
should be written in continuous prose and
have an introduction, body and
conclusion. Appropriate transitional words
and phrases should be used.

18. THE ANALYSIS - 3
In the introduction, you should:
 Briefly (as in one sentence) state what the
reflection was about. Refer to it by name.
 Indicate the two elements which will be
analysed.

19. THE ANALYSIS - 4
In the body, you should address each
element on its own. To address each
element:
1. DEFINE it and cite the source of your
definition.
2. Provide examples of it from the reflection,
explaining in detail HOW and WHY it was
used.

20. THE ANALYSIS - 5
3. Explain how the element enhances the
reflection and the theme of the Internal
Assessment.

21. THE ANALYSIS - 6
The conclusion should
 Restate the importance of the two elements
– how they enhance the reflection and could
add to the readers’ understanding and
appreciation of it.

22. THE CONCLUSION
The conclusion (of the Portfolio) should
explain what you gained from pursuing the
topic/theme of your Internal Assessment.

23. THE CONCLUSION (CONTINUED)
For example, you may have a better
understanding of the topic due to interviews
and secondary research. You may mention
that you might be able to reach key
persons/change mindsets through your
Internal Assessment.

24. THE BIBLIOGRAPHY
The Bibliography should follow the APA or
MLA format. See pages 150 and 151 of the
text book.

25. THE APPENDIX
The appendix should include:
1. A copy of your list of interview questions/a
copy of your questionnaire
2. Copies of any articles you used in your
research (at least one)

26. POINTS TO NOTE
 Your Internal Assessment must be submitted
in both PRINTED and ELECTRONIC forms.
 PROOFREAD your work before you submit it
to your teacher.
 Number your pages and make sure that the
page numbers correspond with the numbers
in the Table of Contents.
