6. Stage 1
Free play
• Activity engaged in by people of all ages especially
children
• It includes exploration, pretence, expression of oneself,
role playing and, various form of physical activity
• No firm rules and can take place anywhere
• Being engage in for the simple pleasure it provides
Stage 2
Game play
• Requires greater structure and involves some kind of
competition
• Has a clear set of objectives that enhance our physical
and mental capacities and are governed by a set of
rules and/or regulations
• Final outcome of a game can be based on luck, skill or
strategy, or any combination of the three
• There are no leagues, standing, or schedules
• The players are usually the official
7. Stage 3
Sport
• Specialized form of game play
• Contains a physical components such as strength, speed,
endurance, flexibility, coordination, balance, and/or agility
• Involves winning or losing
• Governed by an organization or institution that sets and
enforces the rules and regulations and establishes the
way in which results are kept and used
• Requires specialized facilities and equipments the
conform to a set standard
Stage 4
Work
• Sports participants have developed skills to such a high
degree that they are able to earn a living from their craft
in organized sports as professional players, trainers or
coaches
• Financial payments they received to perform in sport
classifies them as sports professionals
