LESSON 3 (MIDTERMS):
QUESTION:
“HAVE YOU EVER
WATCHED A KOREAN
DRAMA, FOLLOWED A
TIKTOK TREND, OR
ENJOYED A HOLLYWOOD
MOVIE?
QUESTION:
“IF YOU COULD
RECOMMEND ONE MOVIE,
SONG, OR ONLINE TREND
FROM YOUR COUNTRY
FOR THE WHOLE WORLD
TO ENJOY, WHAT WOULD
IT BE AND WHY?”
INTRODUCTION
Imagine this: you’re watching a Korean drama on Netflix,
listening to an American pop song on Spotify, and
scrolling through TikTok where people from all over the
world are doing the same dance challenge. Without even
realizing it, you are already part of a bigger,
interconnected world — the world of global media
cultures.
In today’s digital age, media is no longer confined to one
country. Movies, music, TV shows, advertisements, and
even memes travel across borders at lightning speed.
They create shared experiences that connect people
from different backgrounds, languages, and cultures.
DEFINITION OF TERMS
GLOBALIZATION
Globalization is the growing
interdependence of the world’s
economies, cultures, and
populations, brought about by
cross-border trade in goods and
services, technology and flows of
investment, people and
information.
DEFINITION OF TERMS
MEDIA
Media refers to the
different means of
communication like radio,
television, internet, etc. It
plays a very important role
in shaping human mind.
DEFINITION OF TERMS
CULTURE
Culture “the way of life for an
entire society.” Unified style
of human knowledge, beliefs,
and behavior, from which
people learn, and the ability
to communicate knowledge
to the next generation
The interconnected system of
media forms (TV, film, music,
internet, social media,
advertisements, etc.) that cross
national boundaries and influence
how people interact, consume,
and identify with culture.
WHAT IS GLOBAL
MEDIA CULTURE?
Media cultures take part in the
process of globalization, including
how they challenge existing
cultures and create new and
alternative symbolic and cultural
communities.

• Why do you think global media
spreads so quickly?
• Is global media culture uniting us
or making us lose our local
identity?

across borders.

DYNAMICS OF LOCAL AND
GLOBAL CULTURE
Global products are those
that are marketed
internationally under the
same brand name,
features, and specifications
across sountries.
GLOBAL CULTURAL
PRODUCT
LOCAL CULTURAL
PRODUCT
These are goods and
services such as arts,
literatures, architectures,
museums, movies, music,
etc. that showcase the
history and information
which belong to the
country’s cultural heritage.
1.CULTURAL DIFFERENTIALISM
THREE PERSPECTIVES
ON GLOBAL CULTURAL
FLOWS
This emphasizes the fact that
cultures are essentially different and
are only superficially affected by
global flows. It also involves barriers
that prevent flows that serve to make
cultures more align; cultures tend to
remain stubbornly different from
one another.
2. CULTURAL HYBRIDIZATION
THREE PERSPECTIVES
ON GLOBAL CULTURAL
FLOWS
Is a process by which a cultural
element blends into another
culture by modifying the element
to fit cultural norms.
3. CULTURAL CONVERGENCE
THREE PERSPECTIVES
ON GLOBAL CULTURAL
FLOWS
An approach that stresses
homogeneity introduced by
globalization. Cultures are deemed
to be radically altered by strong
flows, while cultural imperialism
happens when one culture imposes
itself on and tends to destroy at least
parts of another culture.

BALANCING THE
IMPACTS
Global media cultures shape the way we
see the world and ourselves. They create
bridges between nations, allowing people
to share art, ideas, and values. At the same
time, they raise concerns about cultural
loss, consumerism, and misinformation. As
critical media consumers, we must
celebrate diversity, preserve local culture,
and engage responsibly with global media.

INSTRUCTIONS:
Divide the class into small groups (3–5
members each). Each group will research
important events, inventions, or trends that
influenced global media. On a bond paper,
arrange the events chronologically. Include the
year, event, short description, and impact on
global culture. Add images, logos, or symbols
to make the timeline more engaging.

GLOBAL MEDIA TIMELINE
Reflection Questions:
1.Which media development do you think had
the biggest influence on global identity?
Why?
2.Do you think today’s global media platforms
(TikTok, Netflix, YouTube) will still be
significant 50 years from now? Why or why
not?
3.How do these global media milestones
connect to your own life and identity?
