2. INTRODUCTION
• During the month of March, a study was conducted among students
of the Belarusian State Medical University. A total of 100 participants
took part in it, divided as followed:
Belarusians: 44
1st year – 32
5th year – 12
Foreigners: 56
1st year – 37
5th year – 19

4. AIM OF THE STUDY
• The study was aimed at analyzing the relation between the lifestyle of students,
their physical activity and their level of stress and anxiety. It was also made in
order to assess the possible differences between Belarusian students and
foreigners students, and the possible differences between 1st year students and
5th year students.
• The students were asked to fill in a profile, allowing us to have an understanding
of their general lifestyle and study schedule. Afterwards, they were presented
with 3 questionnaires.
• The first was there to determine the optimal study time for each, by assessing
whether they were more of an evening or a morning type of person
• The second allowed us to assess their level of stress/anxiety at the moment of
the test
• The third and last allowed us to assess their overall level of stress/anxiety.

8. DATA ANALYSIS
• The participants were aged from 16 to 28 years old
• Their height varied from 130cm to 195cm
• Their weight ranged from 45kg to 110kg
• The gender repartition was as followed:
Men: 45
Belarusians: 18

• Only 12% of students knew their cholesterol levels. However, among
these 12%, the results were as followed:
58.33% had a cholesterol level under 5.2mmol/L
16.67% had a cholesterol level between 5.2 and 6.2mmol/L
25% had a cholesterol level higher than 6.2mmol/L
• 33% of the participants smoke. 54.55% of Belarusians smoke whereas
only 16.07% of Foreigners smoke. 33.33% of 1st year students smoke,
while 32.26% of 5th year students smoke.

• 61% of the participants drink alcohol. 81.82% of Belarusians drink whereas
only 44.64% of Foreigners do. 57.97% of 1st year students drink, while
67.74% of 5th year students drink.
• The participants were asked to select their favorite beverage. With 20,35%
of the votes, beer is the preferred alcoholic beverage among the
participants, followed by cocktails with 15.93%. The least favorite drinks
being white wine and scotch both with 5.31% of votes.
• Among Belarusians, in 1st place Beer – 15.79%, in 2nd Vodka – 14.47% and
in 3rd Cocktails 13.16%. Among Foreigners, in 1st place Beer – 29.73%, in 2nd
Cocktails 21.62% and in 3rd Red Wine 10.81%
• Among 1st year students, in 1st place Beer – 28.57%, in 2nd Vodka – 19.05%
and in 3rd Cocktails 14.29%. Among 5th year students, in 1st place Cocktails
– 18%, in 2nd Champagne 14% and in 3rd Red Wine 14%

• 63% of students take part in physical activity. 68.18% of Belarusians
affirm doing physical activity while it’s the case for only 58.93% of
Foreigners. 60.87% of 1st year students say doing physical activity and
67.74% of 5th year students as well.
• On average, students prefer weightlifting (28.57% of votes) and
running (17.46% of votes). Weightlifting take 1st place among
Belarusians and Foreigners, with respectively 26.67% and 30.3% of
students practicing it. The same is true for 1st year and 5th year
students with 21.43% and 42.86% respectively.
• On average, they work out 3 times a week between 1h30 and 2h each

• 31% of students combine study and work. 34.09% of Belarusians do, while it’s the
case for only 28.57% of foreigners. 45.16% of 5th year students as well, but only
24.64% of 1st year students
• The study amount during the week resulted in a tie, with less than 5h and 5-15h
bot accumulating 41% of students. However, among Belarusians, the majority,
43.18%, studies less than 5h a week; while among foreigners, the majority, 50%
studies between 5-15h. A demarcation is noted as well between 1st and 5th year
students where for 1st year, 44.93% 5-15h and for 5th year 61.29% less than 5h.
• 51% of students admit being able to focus between 30min and 2h a day. This
standard is maintained across our study groups: B-43.18%, F-57.14%, 1st-40.58%,
5th-74.2%
• 40% of students spend between 10-30h in front of electronic devices for
entertainment purposes during the week. The data stays consistent: B-34.09%
(tie with less than 10h), F-44.64%, 1st-37.67%, 5th-45.16%

• The majority of students (32%) go to sleep between 12-01AM. The same is
true when comparing 1st year and 5th year students with respectively
31.88% and 32.58%. However, a distinction appear between Belarusians
and Foreigners. With 34.09% of votes, Belarusians prefer going to bed
between 11PM-12AM, while Foreigners, with 39.29%, chose 12-01AM.
• The majority of students (40%) wake up between 07-08AM. A distinction
appears when comparing 1st year and 5th year students who chose
respectively, 07-08AM and 06-07AM with respectively, 43.48% and 38.71%.
The same is to be said between Belarusians and Foreigners. With 43.18% of
votes, Belarusians prefer waking up between 06AM-07AM, while
Foreigners, with 55.36%, chose 07-08AM.
29. DATA ANALYSIS (Ctd.)
• After retrieving the anxiety questionnaires, the answers were added
and put on a scale ranging from 25 to 100%. Scores under 50% are
considered mild stress/anxiety or stress-free, between 50-75%
moderate stress and above 75% serious stress level.
• At the moment of the test, 55.03% of students scored under 50%,
37.10% between 50-75% and 7.88% above 75%. The minimum score
registered being 25% and the maximum 100%
• On the overall anxiety level, 47.32% of students scored under 50%,
40.51% between 50-75% and 12.18% above 75%. The minimum score
registered being 25% and the maximum 95%

• At the end of the survey, students were asked if they were satisfied
with their well-being and if the considered their lifestyle as being
healthy.
• The majority was satisfied with the well-being. However, if it’s true
that overall students mostly considered their lifestyle as healthy, it
wasn’t the case among 5th year students, who were the only having
the majority saying their lifestyle wasn’t healthy.
• Among those whose lifestyle wasn’t as healthy as they wished it to
be, the vast majority were willing to improve it.

35. CONCLUSION
• Overall, a lot of similarities are present among Belarusians and
Foreigners, as well as among 1st and 5th year students.
• The striking differences were mostly noted on:
Alcohol consumption – Belarusians drink twice as much as foreigners and
Beer is the preferred beverage.
Smoking – Belarusians smoke 3.5 more than foreigners
Physical Activity – 5th year students train as much as first year but longer
(30min longer). The preferred physical exercise is weightlifting.
Study – 5th year students are twice more likely to combine study and work
than 1st year students.

Leisure – 5th year students spend more time for leisure than 1st year students
(4 more hours per week)
Water – Foreigners drink 250ml more than Belarusians a day. 1st year students
drink 150ml more than 5th year students a day
