Segregation Divides America ,[object Object],Plessy V. Ferguson (1896): supreme court rules separate, but equal facilities are legal. De Jure Segregation: segregation that is enforced by law. De Facto Segregation: segregation that is enforced by tradition. Hotels, schools, hospitals, restaurants, and cemeteries, etc. were all segregated. http://bradley.chattablogs.com/archives/2008/01/
"We come then to the question presented: Does segregation of children in public schools solely on the basis of race, even though the physical facilities and other "tangible" factors may be equal, deprive the children of the minority group of equal educational opportunities? We believe that it does...We conclude that in the field of public education the doctrine of 'separate but equal' has no place. Separate educational facilities are inherently unequal. Therefore, we hold that the plaintiffs and others similarly situated for whom the actions have been brought are, by reason of the segregation complained of, deprived of the equal protection of the laws guaranteed by the Fourteenth Amendment.” (http://www.crmvet.org/tim/timhis54.htm#1954bvbe) This Supreme Court decision really got the ball rolling for the Civil Rights Movement because now public schools cannot be segregated. Brown v. The Board of Education, 1954
Little Rock High School had a plan to slowly integrate. Nine young African American students volunteered to enroll. The day the students showed up, the governor, Faubus, of Arkansas called out the National Guard to block the students entrance into the high school. President Eisenhower however, over ruled Governor Faubusonce he found out what he had done and sent federal troops to the school to protect the students. This law established the United States Civil Rights Commission. Which had power to investigate violations of civil rights. The law also gave the U.S. Attorney General greater power to protect the voting rights of African Americans.
