Season of Migration to the North by Tayed Salih was different from what I expected when I originally read the description on the back. I did not expect it to talk about many different controversial topics. One problem that I had when reading the first half of this book was that I found myself getting confused at times because it was very fast paced. I’m not sure if that is just how the book was written or if it has to do with the fact that it has been translated. There were many different themes and central conflicts discussed in the novel just in the first half of it. However, in my opinion the most important themes discussed are the comparison and connections between Eastern and Western cultures, sex, and women. This book shows many times in which people from different cultures start a dialogue of discussion and there is a lot of miscommunication. There are many times in which Mustafa talks about Arabic poetry and other topics but there is not much attempt to try and understand any sides and different ways of thinking. In another sections in the book, there are discussions about Sudan and women in the East in comparison to the West and there are misconceptions that are brought up but never addressed or acknowledged. While reading this, I keep thinking back to myself that neither side ever attempts to communicate with the other seriously and directly to understand each point of view or discuss their differences and opinions. Therefore, this then continues to deepen the gap between both cultures. Other themes in the first half of the book include issues about women and sex. Multiple times women are spoken about as objects and being there only for the pleasure of sex. Again, I wonder if this is what the original book implies or if the translators misconceptions are being portrayed in his translation. In that case, it creates a bad image on Sudan that might not be the whole truth or view and idealizes the west. Many times I felt like the book portrayed that the West is what everyone in the book is trying to be like because they are the correct and this is the best way. The Book Exp
- 1. What is the text about? It is about a sad story developed in the middle of the French-Indian War, during the years 1750 to 1760. However, there are some events of the war, the author emphasizes in other things like human values and principles. For example, he describes braves Indians, proud soldiers, smart ladies, and love among some of the characters. Instead he emphasized those, he also talk about jealous, vicious, and treasons. Why did I choose this particular text? Actually, because I saw the cover and its picture was nice for me. But also, because I saw the summary and, after I looked inside, I saw very interesting draws that told me a little about the story, but enough to be interested in reading it. Did I like the book? Why? Of course, because I enjoyed the way the author describes all events. He used details to describe both nature and peoples. And he linked a fictional story with real events that happened at the beginning of the United Sates. What reading strategies did I apply to help me interact with the material? Actually I had to read for through comprehension most of the time, because there were a lot of words that I never had seem, then I had to skip them and continue reading to understand the main idea and sometimes, I had to analyze words, sentences and paragraph. I also applied critical reading to write the journals and to compare with my own experiences. What is one thing that I learned from reading this text? The most important thing that I learned with this reading was that in those times, most of the territories from the United States were from Spanish and French. The British only had a few colonized lands, but they send soldiers from Europe to fight against Indians and French to gain more territories. I also learned that the British could be called England, too. Did the text I chose address any element of culture? If so, which one(s)? In fact, there are a lot of cultural elements. For example, the author describes how the Indians were organized, and why some of them fight with French and while others with British. I also comprehended why the warfare was different in America comparing with wars in Europe, because the influence of Indian tactics and the extremely hard environment.
