Presentation on BLOOD prepared by MS. JASPREET KAUR Clinical instructor at MHR DAV Institute of nursing education, Jalandhar.
In this PPT there are introduction of BLOOD, Function of blood and Components of blood explained briefly.
2. DEFINITION:
Blood is a specialized fluid of connective tissue in
humans and other animals that delivers necessary
substances such as nutrients and oxygen to the cells
and transport metabolic waste products away from
those cells.
3. PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF BLOOD
Color: Scarlet(oxygen rich) to dark red (oxygen poor)
Volume: 4-5 L (females); 5-6 L (males)
Viscosity: 5 times more viscous than water
Specific Gravity: 1.045-1.065
pH: 7.35-7.45
Temperature: 38 degree celcius
4. FUNCTIONS OF BLOOD
Transportation-
1. Blood transport oxygen from lungs to body tissues and carbon dioxide
from the cells to the lungs.
2. It transport nutrients from alimentary tract to the tissues.
3. It transport hormones from endocrine glands to their target glands and tissues.
4. It transports waste products of cellular metabolism from body tissues to excretory
organs
5. Functions of blood
Protection: the blood restricts fluid losses through damaged vessels. Platelets in
the blood and clotting proteins minimize blood loss when blood vessel is
damaged.
Regulation: blood regulates pH and maintains the water and electrolyte balance
in the body.
Also regulates the body temperature.
8. Erythrocytes(Red Blood Cells)
Main function is to carry oxygen
Biconcave disks
Essential bags of hemoglobin
Anucleate (no nucleus)
Outnumber white blood cells 1000:1
Major contributing factor to blood viscosity
Life span of RBCs: 120 days
9.
10. Leukocytes (White Blood Cells)
Colorless- lack hemoglobin
Have nuclei
Can be stained and seen under microscope
Largest blood cells
Life span : 12-20 days
12. Thrombocytes (Platelets)
Smallest of the circulating formed elements
Are anuclear bodies produced in bone marrow from megakaryocytes
(hematopoietic cells which are responsible for the productions of blood platelets)
Minute discs 1-4 micro diameter
Have a life span of 8-12 days, old ones are removed by tissue macrophages mostly
in spleen
