The conservative movement built in the 1980s as people joined the "New Right" to oppose abortion, the removal of prayer in schools, affirmative action, busing, and welfare programs, while supporting traditional family values and individual responsibility. Ronald Reagan appealed to businesspeople wanting deregulation, southerners wanting smaller government, westerners wanting less federal land control, and Democrats believing their party had become too liberal. Reagan defeated Jimmy Carter in 1980 by promising smaller government, lower taxes, and traditional values as people were frustrated by the hostage crisis, high inflation, and poor economy under Carter.
