The Best Way to Teach Children

For the successful teaching of English to children, it is essential for the teacher to
understand the young learners' characteristics. Because it will play a crucial role in how the
teacher builds a lesson, how he or she can make sure that the children are fully involved in
the learning process, how he or she achieves the objectives of a lesson, and how they
respond.

Here are some children characteristics and how the way to teach them:

   1. According to piaget, children are active learners and thinkers. Because they are active
learners and thinkers, I will teach English by involving them to some activities, such
as sing an action song like “head and shoulder, knees and toes” song. We also can
involve them in making realia for example making origami frog, fish and butterfly.
Their own understanding comes through hands and eyes and ears. The physical world
is dominant at all time, play game, sing an action songs, talk about what they are
doing, use logical reasoning, use a wide range of intonation pattern in their mother
tongue, etc (Scott and Ytreberg 1990).
   2. They learn through social interaction (vygotsky, 1962). They will learn English
through their interaction with their teacher, their friends and all people around them.
Because they got bored quickly (Harmer, 2001), so I will vary from activity to activity
to have a good and fun interaction with them. If I have asked them to sing and making
realia, I would ask them to coloring and playing a puzzle. Children also have short
attention and concentration span (Scott and Ytreberg, 1990:2). So that my activity
variation will keep their interesting in the learning process.
   3. Bruner (1983) stated that children learn effectively through scaffolding by adults. In
their original formulation, Wood, Bruner and Ross (1976) identified six features of
      effective scaffolding. These were:
      a) Creating children’s interest in the task.
      b) Simplifying the task, for example, breaking it down into stages.
      c) Keeping children on track by reminding them of the goal.
      d) Pointing out key things to do and/or showing the child other ways of doing parts
          of the task.
      e) Controlling the child’s frustration during the task.
      f) Demonstrating an idealized way of doing the task.

Teacher is their parents in the class, so the teacher should guide them to learn English
in the learning process. If I teach children to coloring, I will guide them by giving the
example how the way to color correctly. If I teach children to sing head and
shoulders, knees and toes, I will give them the example to point at the right place.
