The Multiplier Event of the PILAR project was part of the IEEE EDUCON 2018 conference held in April, 2018, in Tenerife, canary Islands, with the presence of 30 people to see the PILAR federation as well as Intellectual Outputs of the project (mainly IO3, Federation and policies) as well as practical results and access to the PILAR website, web application and VISIR nodes transparently

VISIR
Remind >>> what is VISIR?
• Virtual Instrument Systems in Reality
• VISIR is a remote laboratory for wiring and measuring electronics circuits on a breadboard
• VISIR allows realizing real measurements on physical equipment with concurrent users
• The entire equipment is controlled by LabVIEW server software
• The wiring mechanism is developed by means of a relay switching matrix connected to a
PCI eXtensions for Instrumentation (PXI)

VISIR
Remind >>> what is not VISIR?
• VISIR is not a simulation software or a virtual lab; there is a physical limitation since it
does not allow an indeterminate number of concurrent users
• VISIR is not a lab to carry out any type of experiment; for example, destructive
experiments are not allowed because all experiments must be reusable
• VISIR is not an instructor; The measurement server acts as an instructor to avoid
hazard circuits but it lacks of assessment and evaluation for teachers or guidance for
students

VISIR
All VISIR nodes have a limitation on the available components and feasible circuits. This
limitation derives from:
• Limitation in the number of component boards installable (15 at most)
• The components/shortcircuits allocated at each component board depends of the
component board version (2, 10/16)
• The available circuits depend on the design of the component boards

PILAR
The federation of remote laboratories is a feature that RLMSs have started to support, providing
management tools and managing common services: Two universities using the same RLMS support
federation protocols.
i.e. Go-Lab counts with remote and virtual laboratories from 18 institutions
…but, each remote laboratory is considered as an individual entity.
Two institutions providing the same remote lab can balance their clients/users load. This feature improves
the users’ involvement in the remote lab environment due to the improved time response and availability. But
in VISIR is not enough to share the lab, same experiments are also required.

PILAR
• Redundancy approach: scalability, reliability and availability at the expense of
diversity.
• Diversity approach: Each VISIR node can specialize in a specific topic (component’s
reusability in the matrix)
• Combined approach: empowering scalability for those common experiments and
dedicating each node in a specific area.
• Agreed-Shared approach: Each node has to design a percentage of their
components boards based on the federation needs

Conclusions
• Need of a VISIR federation
• Need of sharing experiments
• Any of the approaches suggested for the experiments federation in PILAR will
improve/empower the efficiency of each VISIR system
• PILAR allow partners to share their learnings and capabilities of their respective VISIR
systems and experiences
• PILAR is shared with the rest of the academic community
• The main challenge is derived from the different architectures implemented at each
node

Redundancy approach: scalability, reliability and availability at the expense of diversity. If one node is not available for any reason, its effort can be supported by other nodes.
Diversity approach: Each VISIR node can specialize in a specific topic (component’s reusability in the matrix) This approach empowers experiment catalog at the expense of scalability and reliability.
Combined approach: empowering scalability for those common experiments and dedicating each node in a specific area.
Agreed-Shared approach: Each node has to design a percentage of their components boards based on the federation needs (redundancy, diversity or combined), and design freely the rest of component boards sharing the experiments with the partners.
