The Battle of Moreuil Wood took place on March 30, 1918 along the Avre River in France over control of a strategic position. General J.E.B. Seely led Allied forces against the Germans commanded by General Erich Ludendorff. At 9:30am, Seely ordered cavalry units to occupy and clear areas of the Moreuil woods while protecting nearby villages from German forces stationed there. The battle resulted in heavy losses for both sides, with the Germans losing 250,000 men, unable to replace such losses. The Allies lost 240,000 but received reinforcements, and their defense at Moreuil Wood contributed to the failure of the overall German spring offensive.
