The atom is the smallest piece of matter and is made up of protons, neutrons, and electrons. Protons and neutrons are packed tightly together in the nucleus at the center of the atom, which contains most of its mass. Electrons have a negative charge and orbit outside the nucleus. Most atoms contain the same number of protons and electrons, so the charges cancel out and atoms as a whole are electrically neutral.
