The Architecture of Change
Business Architecture and the meaning of Digital Transformation
This paper describes digital transformation and its illumination using a discipline known as business architecture. In Part 1, we explore the term and point to a need for a generative abstraction in order to understand the its meaning. Part 2, we explore the power of abstraction to render insight and mobilize thought. Part 3 lays out the basic principles of business architecture and applies them to a business planning its own digital transformation. Finally, we argue that, insofar as digital transformation has a meaning, it is architectural in nature.

The document discusses the concept of digital transformation that businesses are currently undergoing. It notes that while consultants emphasize the disruptive nature of digital change, digital transformation is actually a process of compromise that involves optimizing business processes, products, people and assets through automation. The key is for businesses to start with a clear ambition of what they want to achieve through digital efforts and then work backwards to implement changes.

Companies that are digitally mature in both areas, called "Digirati", significantly outperform competitors on financial measures like profitability, revenue generation, and market valuation. While all industries can benefit from digital transformation, some industries like high tech, banking and retail already exhibit higher digital maturity on average, while others like manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, and utilities tend to be less digitally mature currently. Companies in any industry can improve performance by developing their digital and transformation capabilities.

Digital Evolutions: Startups, Platforms and EcosystemsSimone Cicero
Digital platforms and ecosystems are experiencing exponential growth and disruption. Understanding their dynamics is important for startups, platforms, and ecosystems. Platforms go through phases from pioneers seeking opportunities, to settlers addressing demand, to town planners optimizing operations. Innovation occurs both on top of and below interfaces as value increases. Designing platforms requires understanding value exchanges between roles to overcome challenges like liquidity. Growth involves working like a startup, nurturing relations like a platform, and always disrupting yourself like an ecosystem.
This document discusses conceptualizing virtual learning environments as digital learning ecosystems. It notes a lack of connection between existing conceptualizations and educational theory. The document then introduces the concept of a digital learning ecosystem as an adaptive socio-technical system consisting of interacting digital tools, services, and content; communities of users; and their social, economic, and cultural environment. Key questions are discussed around advantages and disadvantages of this approach compared to traditional views, and how concepts from ecosystems ecology could inform research on digital learning ecosystems.

In the past designers made products useful, usable and delightful. If we adhered to these principles we believed products would sell. The business factors were mostly external to the product. Now the business model is an integral requirement that shapes digital design.
The consumer electronic products we used to own were the embodiment of access to entertainment, personal media and communication. The past decade witnessed the demise of products we own to the explosion of services, enabled by the internet, we use. Value perceptions are shifting from ownership towards seamless accessibility and habitual choice. Technology convergence affords ever new interactions between context, content and social relationships and consequently value perceptions are in perpetual flux. We've become aware, in retrospect, that business models driven by the internet and reacting to this flux seem to follow evolutionary tendencies.
- A look at a brief history of business models on the internet affected by evolutionary forces.
- Is it all about the survival of the fittest? And are there successful niche opportunities?
- Although evolution is inherently non-deterministic it doesn't harm to ask the question: what lies ahead and where are we going? Can products and services be designed to become more adaptive to evolutionary requirements?

The document discusses Accenture's research into how virtual reality (VR) can impact user engagement, influence, and knowledge retention. Accenture conducted a study comparing static images, online photospheres, and mobile VR apps for presenting information about a national park. They found that more immersive VR experiences led to higher ratings for user engagement, influence to visit the park, and feeling the experience was a sufficient replacement for being there. Specifically, VR increased engagement by 18%, influence by 16%, and sufficiency by 15% compared to more passive media. The conclusion is that beyond just gaming, VR can provide meaningful benefits for applications that aim to educate users and influence behaviors.

Artificial intelligence has the potential to significantly boost economic growth rates through its role as a capital-labor hybrid and its ability to accelerate innovation. AI can drive growth via three mechanisms: intelligent automation by adapting to automate complex tasks at scale, labor and capital augmentation by helping humans focus on higher value work and improving efficiency, and innovation diffusion by generating new ideas and revenue streams from data. For economies to fully benefit from AI, governments must prepare citizens and policy for integration with machine intelligence, encourage AI-driven regulation, advocate ethical guidelines for AI development, and address potential redistribution effects of job disruption.

The document discusses how IT sourcing must change to meet the demands of the "Ideas Age" economy. It notes that organizations now need to rapidly respond to changing customer needs. IT departments must be able to quickly source solutions or risk being replaced. The "Ideas Age" requires a focus on core competencies and interconnected functionality with customers. Leaders must source flexible, integrated systems using insourced, outsourced, and multi-sourced services. Cloud computing enables organizations to nimbly source innovative solutions. An "Information Services Sourcing Blueprint" can help organizations define, source, integrate, and deliver best-of-breed business and IT services to achieve outcomes.
ITARC Sofia 2016 - Modern Architecture - Tihomir IgnatovTihomir Ignatov
This document discusses IT architecture and the role of IT architects in digital transformation. It begins by defining IT architecture as the process of developing methodical IT specifications, models, and guidelines using notations like UML within a coherent framework. An IT architect is responsible for developing and delivering business strategy through technology, addressing cross-cutting concerns like performance, security, and reliability, and communicating to solve problems at the business and technology level. Digital transformation is defined as using technology to radically change how businesses operate and how they deliver value to customers. The document outlines how IT architects can drive digital transformation initiatives by linking strategic business goals and scenarios to enabling technologies and providing examples of how specific technologies support transformation.
The document discusses the importance of collaboration between IT and business for successful digital transformation. It provides Starbucks as an example where the CIO, Stephen Gillett, collaborated closely with the CMO to set up a digital innovation unit called Digital Ventures. This unit fused IT and marketing expertise and delivered innovations like a mobile payments program that helped drive Starbucks' growth. The document emphasizes that digital masters like Starbucks have a shared understanding between IT and business of how digital technologies can increase productivity and competitiveness.
Enterprise architecture (EA) aims to holistically lead organizations through disruptive changes by identifying how to execute changes to achieve desired business outcomes. EA provides business and IT leaders with recommendations to adjust policies and projects. The document discusses the need for EA to bridge gaps between business and IT, digital natives and digital immigrants, and strategy and execution. It also recommends that organizations start a business-focused dialogue, collaborate to change culture, nurture architecture talent, focus on customers, and deliver capabilities in varied speeds and methods.
This document discusses how IT organizations need to evolve to better serve businesses. It argues that IT service management (ITSM) and IT cloud management (ITCM) approaches can help IT respond more quickly and efficiently to business needs. ITSM involves understanding customer needs, defining technology requirements, and ensuring consistent service delivery. ITCM provides flexible computing and application services. When combined, ITSM and ITCM allow IT to demonstrate the characteristics of an external service provider by understanding customer needs, having repeatable processes, and enabling structured innovation. The document suggests that like organisms evolving through natural selection, IT must adapt to remain viable by adopting approaches like ITSM and ITCM.
Deloitte University Press - Tech trends2016Phuong Bi
Tech Trends features perspectives from client executives, industry and academic luminaries,
and our global network of Deloitte professionals, all exploring major trends that are helping
organizations innovate in the digital era. We also examine the roadmaps and investment priorities
of start-ups, venture capitalists, and leading technology vendors.
As you read the following chapters, we challenge you to think beyond the “what” of digital
innovation—the shiny objects, applications, and capabilities—to the “so what”—how you will
harness emerging trends, innovation, and disruption to create real business value. Viewing the
horizon through this paradigm, recognize that the precision to which we’ve all become accustomed
may no longer be a given; in the age of digital innovation, we are exploring largely uncharted
territory. Moreover, any digital transformation journey should also address the more practical
realities of today—reimagining core systems, industrializing analytics capabilities, building
autonomic platforms—which are by no means trivial.
Over the next 18–24 months, the only constant may be the specter of constant change. Amid this
turmoil, organizations that can confidently and purposefully harness technology trends will find
great opportunities to refocus, to revitalize, or even to inspire. Think beyond incremental adoption
patterns. Look not only for ways to do familiar things differently, but also to do fundamentally
different things. Launch new processes, products, and services, and seek out new ways to compete.
No matter what the scope, the time for you to act is now. Build tomorrow, starting today.
The document summarizes key points from Deloitte's 2016 Tech Trends report, which examines eight technology trends that will likely disrupt businesses in the next 18-24 months. These include blockchain, augmented reality, the Internet of Things, reimagining core systems, autonomic platforms, industrialized analytics, and the social impact of exponential technologies.
It discusses how every company is now a technology company and how digital innovation is driving changes across business models and competition. It also emphasizes that CIOs have an opportunity to shape their organizations' futures by transforming business as usual and harnessing innovation responsibly.
The report challenges readers to think beyond just adopting new technologies but to use emerging trends to create real business
The high-level goal of the digital architecture is to provide an exceptional experience. This in turn supports conversions, satisfaction, loyalty, repeat purchases and referrals. The winning business is the one who has the most exceptional experience at the right place, the right time with the most relevant message.
The document discusses the concept of creating an "unbounded" IT organization by transforming traditional IT operating models. Specifically, it suggests that CIOs break down functional silos, embrace multiple speeds of IT delivery, and automate processes early to help streamline development. This would help loosen traditional boundaries around IT and allow for more flexible, multidisciplinary teams that can better support business goals. Creating an unbounded IT organization may require changes to organizational structures, processes, and systems, but could help make IT services more efficient and responsive to business needs.

This document discusses integrating IT service management (ITSM) and project portfolio management (PPM) systems to provide greater visibility into costs, schedules, and demand for IT services. It notes that the integration of CA Service Desk and Clarity PPM using IT-ROI Solutions' Integration Bridge suite can increase enterprise visibility, help IT communicate value to stakeholders, and allow the PMO and ITSM teams to share important cost and demand information. Integrating the two systems provides benefits like improved reporting capabilities, visibility into costs and schedules, and the ability to make better staffing and investment decisions.
The digital transformation symphony when it and business play in syncRick Bouter
The document discusses how Starbucks successfully transformed digitally under the leadership of CIO Stephen Gillett from 2008 to 2012. Gillett collaborated closely with other executives to set up Digital Ventures, a new business unit focused on digital innovation. Digital Ventures delivered innovations like a mobile payments program that helped drive Starbucks' turnaround. The document argues that strong IT-business collaboration, as exemplified by Starbucks, is key to digital transformation success. It also notes that most organizations lack such collaboration between IT and business teams.
The Digital Transformation Symphony: When IT and Business Play in SyncCapgemini
Digital Masters, such as Starbucks, that leverage digital technologies effectively, differentiate themselves from their peers by consciously striving to build a close relationship between IT and the business. However, Digital Masters are exceptions. The IT-business relationship in most organizations is often a fractious relationship rather than a marriage of equals. Business teams often find the IT department’s high costs and long implementation timelines unacceptable. In addition, IT leaders are often faulted for not speaking the language of business. Leading CIOs take this disconnect head on and try and fix it. Our research shows that leading CIOs take three key actions to align the IT department with the needs of the business: 1. redesign the IT department to unlock digital innovation; 2. create strong digital platforms; 3. rationalize IT Infrastructure to fund digital initiatives. We explore each of these actions in this research paper.

Many companies have perceived CRM that accompanied by numerous
uncoordinated initiatives as a technological solution for problems in
individual areas. However, CRM should be considered as a strategy when
a company decides to implement it due to its humanitarian, technological
and process-related effects (Mendoza et al., 2007, p. 913). CRM is
evolving today as it should be seen as a strategy for maintaining a longterm relationship with customers.
A CRM business strategy includes the internet with the marketing,
sales, operations, customer services, human resources, R&D, finance, and
information technology departments to achieve the company’s purpose and
maximize the profitability of customer interactions (Chen and Popovich,
2003, p. 673).

Relevance for customers
Building Business Reslience
competitive advantage
Corporate innovation is essential for businesses striving to remain relevant and competitive in today's rapidly evolving market. By continuously developing new products, services, and processes, companies can better meet the changing needs and preferences of their customers. For instance, Apple's regular release of new iPhone models keeps them at the forefront of consumer technology, while Amazon's introduction of Prime services has revolutionized online shopping convenience. Statistics show that innovative companies are 2.5 times more likely to have high-performance outcomes compared to their peers.
This proactive approach not only helps in retaining existing customers but also attracts new ones, ensuring sustained growth and market presence.
Furthermore, innovation fosters a culture of creativity and adaptability within organizations, enabling them to quickly respond to emerging trends and disruptions. In essence, corporate innovation is the driving force that keeps companies aligned with customer expectations, ultimately leading to long-term success and relevance.
Business Resilience
Building business resilience is paramount for companies looking to thrive amidst uncertainties and disruptions. Corporate innovation plays a crucial role in fostering this resilience by enabling businesses to adapt, evolve, and maintain continuity during challenging times. For instance, during the COVID-19 pandemic, many companies that swiftly innovated their business models, such as shifting to remote work or expanding e-commerce capabilities, managed to survive and even thrive. According to a McKinsey report, organizations that prioritize innovation are 30% more likely to be high-growth companies. Innovation not only helps in developing new revenue streams but also in creating more efficient processes and resilient supply chains. This agility allows companies to quickly pivot in response to market changes, ensuring they can weather economic downturns, technological disruptions, and other unforeseen challenges. Therefore, corporate innovation is not just a strategy for growth but a vital component of building a robust and resilient business capable of sustaining long-term success.

M249 Saw marksman PMIThe Squad Automatic Weapon (SAW), or 5.56mm M249 is an individually portable, gas operated, magazine or disintegrating metallic link-belt fed, light machine gun with fixed headspace and quick change barrel feature. The M249 engages point targets out to 800 meters, firing the improved NATO standard 5.56mm cartridge. The SAW forms the basis of firepower for the fire team. The gunner has the option of using 30-round M16 magazines or linked ammunition from pre-loaded 200-round plastic magazines. The gunner's basic load is 600 rounds of linked ammunition. The SAW was developed through an initially Army-led research and development effort and eventually a Joint NDO program in the late 1970s/early 1980s to restore sustained and accurate automatic weapons fire to the fire team and squad. When actually fielded in the mid-1980s, the SAW was issued as a one-for-one replacement for the designated "automatic rifle" (M16A1) in the Fire Team. In this regard, the SAW filled the void created by the retirement of the Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR) during the 1950s because interim automatic weapons (e.g. M-14E2/M16A1) had failed as viable "base of fire" weapons.
Early in the SAW's fielding, the Army identified the need for a Product Improvement Program (PIP) to enhance the weapon. This effort resulted in a "PIP kit" which modifies the barrel, handguard, stock, pistol grip, buffer, and sights.
The M249 machine gun is an ideal complementary weapon system for the infantry squad platoon. It is light enough to be carried and operated by one man, and can be fired from the hip in an assault, even when loaded with a 200-round ammunition box. The barrel change facility ensures that it can continue to fire for long periods. The US Army has conducted strenuous trials on the M249 MG, showing that this weapon has a reliability factor that is well above that of most other small arms weapon systems. Today, the US Army and Marine Corps utilize the license-produced M249 SAW.
