Outside of his work as an orthopedic consultant for the Hawaii Division of Corrections, Dr. John Frauens serves as president and CEO of Softjoint, Inc., which has offices in Honolulu, Hawaii, and Charlotte, North Carolina. An involved professional, Dr. John Frauens maintains membership in the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), a nonprofit group that supports the profession of orthopedic surgery through programs and activities focused on research, education, and advocacy.

programs and activities focused on research,
education, and advocacy.

3.  As a component of its advocacy work, AAOS
oversees a number of federal activities throughout
the year, including its Research Capitol Hill Days. Held
in the spring, the annual event raises awareness of
musculoskeletal diseases and disorders and provides
patients, physicians, and researchers with the
opportunity to meet with key government figures to
request financial support for musculoskeletal
research.
In addition to Research Capitol Hill Days, the
organization operates the Washington Health Policy
Fellowship program, which encourages orthopedic
residents to participate in health policy development
on the national, state, and local levels.

4.  Applicants accepted into the 12-month
program actively participate in the
legislative and regulatory arena and are
expected to present a paper on their
experience at the annual National
Orthopaedic Leadership Conference.
