ATLANTA SUMMIT ON GLOBAL HEALTH
Latin America & the Caribbean
June 1, 2015
Dear Participants:
Welcome to the Atlanta Summit: Health in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Our three organizations – CARE, the World Affairs Council of Atlanta, and the Washington D.C.-
based Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) – welcome you today, June 1, to the
fourth consecutive year of the Atlanta Summit to examine the state of health in Latin America and
the Caribbean and how that impacts The United States.
The panels will highlight a decade’s worth of health gains in the region. As many of the countries in
the region experience rapid urbanization, the focus is turning to the barriers that still limit access to
health services and thwart the treatment of chronic diseases. The Ebola epidemic has illustrated
how rapidly disease outbreaks can cross national borders and this has become a major focus of
U.S. attention. We will also evaluate and discuss reforming international policy on the control of
illicit drugs; an issue that clearly has many health implications.
The Summit will highlight partnerships between the corporations, nongovernmental organizations,
universities and government agencies that make Atlanta a global center of excellence in public
health, and emphasize the effective collaboration necessary to improving health in the region.
By participating in this conference, you are part of a growing collaboration of people and organiza-
tions working to support and advance U.S. leadership in global health. We welcome your feedback
on today’s gathering and thank each of you for joining us.
Sincerely,

  • 2. June 1, 2015 Dear Participants: Welcome to the Atlanta Summit: Health in Latin America and the Caribbean. Our three organizations – CARE, the World Affairs Council of Atlanta, and the Washington D.C.- based Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) – welcome you today, June 1, to the fourth consecutive year of the Atlanta Summit to examine the state of health in Latin America and the Caribbean and how that impacts The United States. The panels will highlight a decade’s worth of health gains in the region. As many of the countries in the region experience rapid urbanization, the focus is turning to the barriers that still limit access to health services and thwart the treatment of chronic diseases. The Ebola epidemic has illustrated how rapidly disease outbreaks can cross national borders and this has become a major focus of U.S. attention. We will also evaluate and discuss reforming international policy on the control of illicit drugs; an issue that clearly has many health implications. The Summit will highlight partnerships between the corporations, nongovernmental organizations, universities and government agencies that make Atlanta a global center of excellence in public health, and emphasize the effective collaboration necessary to improving health in the region. By participating in this conference, you are part of a growing collaboration of people and organiza- tions working to support and advance U.S. leadership in global health. We welcome your feedback on today’s gathering and thank each of you for joining us. Sincerely, Helene D. Gayle, MD, MPH President & CEO CARE USA Ambassador Charles S. Shapiro President World Affairs Council of Atlanta J. Stephen Morrison, PhD Senior Vice President & Director Global Health Policy Center, CSIS
