Edelman’s 2019 Artificial Intelligence (AI) Survey compares the U.S. general public’s perceptions of AI with those of senior tech executives who have a front row seat on AI development and deployment.
Respondents in both survey groups clearly see the potential upsides of AI, but also significant problems; 60 percent of the general public and 54 percent of tech executives agree that regulation of AI is critical for its safe development.
While 91 percent of tech executives and 84 percent of the general public believe that AI constitutes the next technology revolution, there are very real concerns about its impact on society, business and government. These range from smart toys that could invade children’s privacy to negative impacts on the poor to a loss of human intellectual capabilities.
About a third of both groups believe AI-powered “deepfake” videos (videos or audio recordings that are doctored to alter reality) could lead to an information war that, in turn, might lead to a shooting war (30 percent of the general population; 33 percent of tech executives).
Among the key findings:
54 percent of the general public and 43 percent of tech executives say AI will hurt the poor, and 67 percent and 75 percent, respectively, believe it will benefit the wealthy;
71 percent of the general public and 65 percent of tech executives worry that AI will lead to a loss of human intellectual capabilities;
74 percent of the general population and 72 percent of tech executives say that smarter AI-powered devices will lessen the need for people to interact with others, leading to more isolation;
81 percent within the general population and 77 percent of tech executives believe that advances in AI will likely cause a reactionary response from a society that feels threatened;
51 percent of the general population and 45 percent of tech executives state that AI-powered deepfake videos could mean that no information is believable and that they are highly corrosive to public trust.
The research was developed by the Edelman AI Center of Expertise with input from the World Economic Forum.

1) First of all, what is your definition of AI?
I am reminded of a favourite line from George Costanza on
the TV show Seinfeld. In one episode, George suggested

do.”
To me, this sums things up nicely. AI is a set of tools to

some consumer facing problems you’re solving that
impact our readers’ daily lives?
Some of our solutions solve behind-the-scenes types of
issues, while others address everyday problems.
In term of our daily lives, we’re automating conversations
to give customers better, faster, and more relevant
information to their queries. We focus our efforts on
problems in a few key areas - advisory and sales as well as

Let’s take an example. Assume Sally wants a new credit
card. Her first stop is her bank’s website. Her problem is
that the bank has 20 different cards, and each one sounds
fantastic. Which one is best for her? Does she really want to
read all the fine print? Nope, she just wants a card that
meets her needs, gives her certain perks, and allows her to
get back to her day.
With the help of a chatbot, she can directly ask for what she
needs, “I want a card that gives me cash back on things I
buy every day and has no annual fee.” The bot can
immediately answer, “The Regular Joe Card gives you 2%
cash back on groceries, 1.5% back on restaurants, and 1%
back on gas. The first year annual fee is waived. Would you
like to apply?”
In this scenario, Sally gets precisely what she wants and the
bank closes a ‘sale’. This scenario can play out equally well
for travel, insurance, shoes, or toothpaste…the product line
doesn’t matter.
Every business has customers needing information and
advice on which products fit their needs. The problem is
how to best distribute information and advice at a cost that
allows profitability. AI makes it possible to deliver targeted
advice and sales at a fraction of the cost of traditional
methods. It’s a win for the customer and a win for the
business providing the product or service.
Of course, customers also have post-sales servicing
requirements. Customer service reps take a beating, as the
current approach to service is painful for both the business
and the customer. Customers wait on hold, wait for days for
email replies, or deal with overworked agents tending to
many simultaneous conversations on live chat. Do you
cringe at the thought of getting in touch with customer
service? I know I do!
From the other side, if businesses wish to improve service
quality, previously the only choice was to bear significant
costs of increased manpower. Customer service is typically
viewed as a cost-center, and as such the dynamics are setup
for a miserable customer experience.
AI is changing this, and Zumata is allowing customers to
get instant responses to their questions absent human
involvement. Do you recall what it was like to call your
stock broker for a quote? What a hassle! The web made it
easy to get some information effortlessly, and now AI is

playing in the future?
AI is talked about extensively, and everyone has an opinion.
What I can say for certain is that if a company is not
embracing the technology, it will fall behind. As a
consumer, if you’re not choosing brands, products, or
services that are supported by advanced technology, you’re
probably making your life harder and less enjoyable than it
could be. AI is making our lives better by removing
obstacles, personalizing content, and allowing us to be more
productive.
As for the future, AI is increasingly everywhere, and I don’t
think we can predict the true ramifications of its use or the
eventual outcomes of its application. Progress is
unstoppable, and the pace of change is ever accelerating.
It’s a race, and I’d definitely prefer to be at the front of the
pack.

22. With so much attention focused on Artificial
Intelligence (AI), it’s worth remembering that
one size does not fit all. There are specific
business-related pain points in mind when a company
decides to deploy AI technology, so making the right
choices can be a tricky task.
For example, several months ago, an AI related
breakthrough was announced – a robot learned and
demonstrated the ability to perform a perfect backflip.
While it is well acknowledged that the invested research
and development for this mission was huge and the
commercial potential for some applications is enormous, it
is somewhat unclear how this specific innovation or the
core models and algorithms of it, can serve other industries
and verticals. Herein lies the problem.
Gauging AI success in one field in many cases can be
meaningless for another. To make things worse, even when
trying to go deeper into the technology and attempting to
evaluate, for example, which Machine Learning algorithms
are utilized by the product, or what are the number of
layers in the Deep Neural Network models mentioned by
specific vendors, in the end it will be possibly pointless as
it does not directly reflect the solution deployment
‘success’ implications.
Nevertheless, it seems that the market ignores this reality
and continues to evaluate AI-based products by buzzword

Introducing Authentic AI
Given all of this, there is a need to change the narrative
around AI technology and solutions to something
meaningful and authentic that reflects the real-life
challenges and opportunities that businesses are facing.
This is the time to introduce Authentic AI.
The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines ‘Authentic’ as
both ‘worthy of acceptance or belief as conforming to or
based on fact’and ‘conforming to an original so as to
reproduce essential features’. This is not about ‘Fake’ to be
contrasted with ‘Real’. It’s about the essential features of
AI which need to be acknowledged, and hence, redefine
the ‘checklist’. Often, these essential ‘authentic’ features
are hidden and only surface when a CIO/CDO is faced
with a new problem to be solved. This is seen especially
when the AI aspects of a proposed product or solution are
fully explored by asking questions such as:
- Is the AI technology utilized by the product aimed
specifically for my problem, optimally (e.g.,
performance, cost, etc.)?
- Is it capable of addressing the complete problem or
only a part of it?
- Can it be assimilated into the existing ecosystem
without imposing new demands?
- Can it address the compelling environmental
conditions of the problem space?
These issues can be grouped into three different ‘classes’ -
‘Original’, ‘Holistic’ and ‘Pragmatic’:
Original – How innovative is the solution? This can be
quantified by assessing the following:
- the invention of new algorithms or even new models
and
- the use of complex orchestration techniques or
- through the capability to handle complex data formats
and structures.
While there is no need to re-invent the wheel repetitively
for any problem, there are distinctive characteristics which
require optimizing.
Holistic – How complete is the proposed AI technology? It
takes into account the capability of handling the end-to-end
aspects of the solution, the competence of harmonizing the
operation of the various AI components of the solution and
the ability to adapt to ever changing conditions of the AI
application.
Pragmatic – Can the technology solve real world
problems in their actual and natural space in a
commercially viable way? This means that for example the
data sources can be processed in their most native format
(both unstructured or structured) as well as provide
insights or results matching the pragmatic needs of the
specific market expectations. In addition, the ability to be
quickly deployed and rapid to act are assessed.
All of these elements should be used to systematically
assess and evaluate AI-based products and solutions to
assess their authenticity and therefore effectiveness in
specific use cases.
For example, many home-loan mortgage evaluation and
recommendation systems utilize a somewhat isolated
machine learning based applicant classification method,
one of many other processes included within the solution.
The AI in this solution cannot be considered Authentic AI
to a high degree as it ‘scores’ low on the ‘Original’ and
‘Holistic’ classes as it isn’t innovative ‘enough’ (from an
AI sense). In addition, the AI component itself does not
cover on its own the end-to-end aspects of the solution
(hence affecting the overall performance and precision). It
could be considered to be ‘Pragmatic’ to some level if it
can handle the required data sources of financial
institutions or the customer applications natively, and if the
solution ‘output’ are the explicit results required as a
specific recommendation (e.g., loan conditions). However,
the deployment timeline (time-to-market) and commercial
aspects need to be evaluated as well. This is just one
example of many others, covering all kinds of variations.
Perfect backflips may grant you a gold medal if you are a
gymnast but if you are a master chess player don’t expect a
winning move.

connections the whole world is consolidated in
one’s pocket, which is a very fascinating sight. What is
more amazing is that all of this happened so fast. As days
pass everyone is more spellbound with technologies it is
engulfing them in day to day life. Looking at the present
scenario no one can be sure about what the future has in
store but we might be witnessing an age where robots
would be living amongst us.
Looking a few years back before internet came into our
lives, there were uncertainties regarding future, while at
present machines are living amidst us. The smart brains
have infused technology in every bit of our lives and soon
people would be driving cars without drivers, machines that
would do grocery shopping and will be a helping hand to all
laborious works. All of these recent developments or
gradual changes are because of the improvements in
Artificial Intelligence. In a milder way Artificial
Intelligence (AI) can be defined as the computer programs
or models designed to perform a task that usually requires
human intelligence.
A glance at what is to come.
The recent innovations make everyone wonder what all
other changes are yet to be witnessed in coming years. AI
has been swaying our lives in many ways. Researchers have
claimed that scientists were able invent some breakthrough
theories and machines with the help of ‘machine learning’.
Smart cars are now a well-known concept. These
self-driving cars are the beginning of a decagon which
would change the way we move. Imagine a time when
people would be reading newspapers on their way to office
while the car is driving itself. This is both intriguing and
unbelievable in certain ways. Automated news is yet
another enthralling invention that is now getting popular.
Apparently, artificial intelligence programs can now write
news stories. The fact that such a basic task can also get
influenced by AI is intimidating. Online customer support
has been in practice since few years now. Many of the
websites are now using this skill to communicate with their
customers directly.
Apps that recommend music and movies, smart home
devices that studies the resident’s behaviors and suggest
changes accordingly. AI is playing a major role with or
without your knowledge. Have you ever wondered how
‘Siri’ actually helps with the directions when you
command? How the spam filters work in e-mail.? At times
the implication of AI in our lives is obvious while at certain
times it goes unnoticed. But however, it is a fact that AI is
everywhere and it is making a huge difference in everyone’s
lives. Soon would come a time when humans would have a
robot or a computer program helping humans at every
minor and major task. So the near future would witness
improvements in these areas and many more to come.
Would Humans get in way of AI?
What effect will AI have on human experience? Humans
are both indolent and smart to think of ways to get a job
done in an easier way and hence have been working on this
since ages. The idea of robots was always a topic of
excitement and many have been dreaming and working to
make robots a reality. However, as time has passed it is
evident that many of the brightest minds have taken AI to
great heights. When it comes to AI, it has been proved that
there is no limitation and has now emerged as a greater
mission with more and more people working on it.
Despite what technology has been able to do, is the world
ready to accept these changes in a wide scale? The point to
be noted here is that as humans learn with experiences, one
does not know what success is unless he has tasted failure.
This alone works as motivation to strive and work hard to
achieve success. Many times we need to touch a hot stuff to
know and feel that it is hot and shouldn’t be touched.
Humans are not programmed they live through the
experience to know it all. The rights and wrongs are taught
to humans and not programmed wherein the outside
influences are also a major factor of knowledge.
Nevertheless AI is programmed which means it could
understand better than what individuals are capable off. It
wouldn’t be a surprise to know that there might be robots in
near future programmed with even human emotions. This
raises the question whether humans would come in their
way of making this world much easier to live in. Alike
many sci-fi movies would the people be the bystanders of a
world solely lead by machines and robots?

The Spirited Personas of Tanjo
Founders Richard Boyd, CEO, and
David Smith, Chairman, have
worked together for 27 years with two
very successful exits in computer
gaming and simulation. They spent
almost six years developing
technologies at aerospace giant
Lockheed Martin where they founded
an innovation group called Virtual
World Labs, focused on the emerging
fields of VR, AR and AI. The team’s
deep background building large
constructive simulation models of
human populations for the DOD,
paired with their entertainment,
human/machine interface and data
science expertise make for a unique
combination of capabilities.
While at Lockheed, Boyd and Smith
were asked to visit Microsoft Research
labs in 2009 where inventor Alex
Kipman was leading the team to
develop the Microsoft Kinect system
for the xBox. Boyd and Smith came
away impressed with the machine
learning methods employed to teach
the Kinect sensor system how to
recognize people and objects in living
rooms. In 2013, they left Lockheed to
build their own machine learning brain
and Tanjo was born.

ContractBot: One sub application of
the Tanjo brain was built for a major
accounting firm in 2017. In the United
States new revenue recognition rules
were brought into effect from
December 1, 2017. Within a four
month time frame Tanjo taught the
Tanjo brain the new revenue
recognition rules and then trained on
over 2.5 million sales contracts. Now,
the firm can simply feed a company’s
contracts to the Tanjo brain and it will
aid the human auditor in highlighting
any language in those contracts where
the rules apply. This is a great example
of human/ machine cooperation,
achieving efficiencies of over 12x.
In 2016, Tanjo set aside a Tanjo brain
and had it read every single legal
opinion in United States history across
all 417 federal jurisdictions since 1797.
The project took the system less than
two weeks to create a correlated map
of almost four million (somewhat
lengthy) legal opinions.
Tanjo’s third offering uses machine
learning to ingest data exhaust from
human activity to build deep models of
human behavior they call Tanjo
Animated Personas, or “TAPs”. These
TAPs are powerful tools for creating
deep customer empathy, and have also
been used within organizations to build
stronger internal teams (human
resources application) or for higher
education to improve recruiting
methods and even teacher empathy for
more personalized learning paths for
students.
Deeper customer
understanding with
TAP
Tanjo learned that
consumer marketing
companies were
spending a great deal of
money on customer
segmentation modeling.
These models were static
moments in time and
derived from surveys and
focus groups. Tanjo
contacted some of the top
academic minds in human
behavior choice modeling and
created the TAP platform to give
companies a real-time, data-derived

Customer Models
