Thanksgiving is celebrated in the United States on the fourth Thursday of November. The tradition originated from a harvest celebration in 1621, where the English colonists and Wampanoag Native Americans shared a feast after the colonists' first successful corn harvest in Plymouth. It wasn't until 1863 that President Lincoln declared Thanksgiving a national holiday to be held each year on the last Thursday of November. In 1939, President Roosevelt set the date as the fourth Thursday of November to stimulate the economy during the Great Depression.
Thanksgiving is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November. People celebrate to give thanks by having feasts that often include turkey, potatoes, and pies. Symbols of Thanksgiving include turkeys, Indians, pilgrims, and cornucopias. The holiday originated from the 1621 feast shared between the Pilgrims and Native Americans and has been a federal holiday since the time of George Washington.
Sarah Josepha Hale campaigned in the 19th century for an annual national Thanksgiving holiday after the 1621 Plymouth harvest celebration was incorrectly deemed the first Thanksgiving. While prayers were likely said in 1621, the first recorded religious Thanksgiving was in 1623 when the colonists gave thanks for rain after a drought. The modern Thanksgiving holiday was declared by President Lincoln in 1863 to commemorate the Battle of Gettysburg and give general thanks in November.

The modern Thanksgiving holiday has its origins in the harvest feast celebrated by the Pilgrims and Wampanoag people in 1621, though this was not an annual observance. The holiday traditions and meals shared today are not accurate to the original 1621 feast, as foods like turkey, pumpkin pie, and potatoes were not present. It took sustained efforts over many decades by figures like Sarah Josepha Hale before Thanksgiving became a formal, annual observance celebrated across the United States.

In 1071, the fortress of Montemor-o-Velho located near the Mondego River and surrounded by rice fields was handed over to Sesnando Davides to attract settlers to the area. The well-preserved 10th century castle offers views in all directions from its strategic position defending the Mondego River and protecting the city of Coimbra from attacks by sea. Today it remains an important example of Portugal's medieval stone culture and is worth visiting to see some remaining structures from when it was first established.

Though Carolina read this amazing book in Portuguese, the original version is English.
Highly recommended by Carolina who promises to keep reading, especially novels by this best-selling author, Charlotte Bingham.
To promote reading habits, sts are challenged to share their readings by presenting the authors and a synopsis including their opinion on the book. In the end, sts are offered a book - a courtesy of Longman / Pearson.
Miranda do Corvo is a village in Coimbra district with a beautiful church atop a hill overlooking the area. A remaining tower and cistern were once part of an ancient castle from the 11th-12th centuries that played an important defensive role along the Mondego River. In 1064, reforms were made to castles surrounding Coimbra, including one in Miranda do Corvo. The surviving tower would have been part of the medieval fortification walls, as well as the cistern at the top of the hill. Archaeological work since 2011 has uncovered foundations and over 30 graves dating back over 900 years.
School work that is memorable and implies discoveries! Sts were asked to research on new singers / bands and discovered Shawn Mendes who even has a Portuguese father.
This document discusses Castelo de Penela & Germanelo, two medieval castles in Mondego, Portugal. It notes that references to Castelo de Penela date back to the 11th century and that under orders from D. Sesnando within 100 years, further defenses had to be built due to its increasing importance. It also mentions that Castelo de Germanelo was built in 1142 as an addition to help defend the region of Penela. Today, not much remains of Castelo de Germanelo which can only be accessed on foot through muddy grounds.

THE SACRIFICE HOW PRO-PALESTINE PROTESTS STUDENTS ARE SACRIFICING TO CHANGE T...indexPub
The recent surge in pro-Palestine student activism has prompted significant responses from universities, ranging from negotiations and divestment commitments to increased transparency about investments in companies supporting the war on Gaza. This activism has led to the cessation of student encampments but also highlighted the substantial sacrifices made by students, including academic disruptions and personal risks. The primary drivers of these protests are poor university administration, lack of transparency, and inadequate communication between officials and students. This study examines the profound emotional, psychological, and professional impacts on students engaged in pro-Palestine protests, focusing on Generation Z's (Gen-Z) activism dynamics. This paper explores the significant sacrifices made by these students and even the professors supporting the pro-Palestine movement, with a focus on recent global movements. Through an in-depth analysis of printed and electronic media, the study examines the impacts of these sacrifices on the academic and personal lives of those involved. The paper highlights examples from various universities, demonstrating student activism's long-term and short-term effects, including disciplinary actions, social backlash, and career implications. The researchers also explore the broader implications of student sacrifices. The findings reveal that these sacrifices are driven by a profound commitment to justice and human rights, and are influenced by the increasing availability of information, peer interactions, and personal convictions. The study also discusses the broader implications of this activism, comparing it to historical precedents and assessing its potential to influence policy and public opinion. The emotional and psychological toll on student activists is significant, but their sense of purpose and community support mitigates some of these challenges. However, the researchers call for acknowledging the broader Impact of these sacrifices on the future global movement of FreePalestine.
