Americans of all religions celebrate
Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday of
November.
Thansgiving is a special day for families
and people travel great distances to be with
their families.
They give thanks for the food and blessings
The tradition started when in
1620 a group of men , women
and children left England on a
ship called The Mayflower.
In England the Pilgrims had
not been allowed to freely
practice their religion. So
they went to the New World
in search of religious freedom
The voyage was very
hard.They were cold and
hungry and many of them
died.
The voyage took 65 days.
They landed on the north –
east coast of North America.
What today we know as
Massachusetts.
When they arrived it was
almost winter so they had no
time to grow crops. Their first
winter was very hard. Almost
half of the group died of cold,
hunger and disease.
But in spring the Native
Americans of
Massachusetts taught
the Pilgrims how to plant
corn, to hunt and to
fish.
The summer harvest
was very good and by
november, a year after
their first arrival, there
was food for everybody.
The pilgrims were
thankful and had a
feast to give thanks.
They invited the Native
Americans to join them.
This feast, which
lasted 3 days, was the
first Thanksgiving
celebration.
• Today Thanksgiving
has become an
holiday and it is
celebrated on the
last Thursday of
November every
year
On the fourth Thursday in
November, in houses around the
United States, families get
together for a feast or a large
meal. Almost all families eat
turkey and cranberry sauce for
this meal, and have pumpkin pie
for dessert.
It is also very typical to bless the
table and give thanks for
everything.
