Thai Cave Rescue
Overview
 Biggest rescue in thailand’s
history.
 Twelve 11 to 16 years
boys and 25 year old
trainer.
 Boys were of junior
football team.
 Trainer was a Buddhist
monk.
Team Members & Trainer
25-year-old former monk
 Ekapol Chanthawong lost parents at 10.
 Became monk at this age.
 But left monastery to look after ill
grandmother.
 He split time as working in monastery
and trainer.
 Later inspired students to play football.
 Ekapol was trained under Head coach
Norapat.
What actually happened ?
A group of young footballers(Moo Pa) trained.
Head coach Nopparat Khanthavong,37 years.
Ekapol was assistant coach.
Ekapol took team to Doi Nang Non mountain
range.
Nopparat told to ekapol to take some of the
boys from older team.
They played football and entered cave for
lunch as it started raining outside.
 Evening head coach checked phone.
 20 missed calls of kids parents.
 They said that till now they didn’t reached home.
 Head coach called ekapol and other kids.
 Finally reached a 13 year old kid.
 He said we are trapped and then head coach found
kids cycle outside the caves.
 Then they informed the authorities.
Rescue Options
 They had
options:
1. Dive
Out
2. Drain
Out
3. Drill
Escape
4. Wait &
See
 Dive Out
 Teach group
to use scuba
diving.
 And
deciding
when they
were fit for
diving.
Risks
 Some kids don’t
know swimming.
 Dark cave.
 Fast flowing
muddy water.
 Very narrow
sections.
 Panic attack.
 Drain water
 Pump and
drain water
from cave.
 130 ML of
water.
 It was enough
to fill 52
Olympic sized
swimming
pool.
Risks
 Monsoon
forecast .
 High amount
of water.
 Remote
locations.
 Drill an Escape Shaft
 Find an alternate
way into cave.
 Locating a shaft.
 It would be
widened to
rescue team and
coach.
Risks
 The group
was at 800
m to 1 Km.
 Part of cave
would
collapse and
the team
gets
burried.
 Wait and See
 The most straight
forward option was to
wait.
 Water level to go down.
 They figured out it would
take 4 month.
 The food storage
available at basement of
cave.
Risks
 Would take several
month.
 Oxygen deficiency.
 Bad diseases.
 Cave may be
flooded fully.
 Psychologically
traumatised.
Rescue
 After a call British caver.
 Thai government to request assistance from the
British Cave Rescue Council (BCRC).
 The navy Seal officers arrived on 25th june.
 They said water was so muddy that they cant move.
 On 27th june 3 BCRC divers arrived with Heyphone
LF radios.
 On 28th june United States Air Force team.
 On 29 June, an Australian Police Group divers.

 Meanwhile police dogs searched cracks to make shaft.
 Meanwhile divers from every countrytrying to find
the way.
 Heavy rain stopped program.
 Again the search began on 2nd july and discovered
team.
 The boys and coach was on a rock mass at pattaya
beach chamber.
 other countries divers helped supply sufficient air tank
Rescue
Rescue
 Ellon musk company space X helped making capsule.
 As if the boys traveled, can get panic attack.
 May lead to their death.
 So the company made a platform.
 boys were dressed in a wetsuit, buoyancy jacket,
harness and a positive pressure full face mask.
 Finally everyone got out of cave and were taken to
hospitals.
Rescue
Navy seal officer
 On 5 July , Saman Kunan a 37 Thai Navy SEAL,
made a dive from Chamber 3 to the T Junction close
to Pattaya Beach to deliver three air tanks.
 During his return he lost consciousness underwater.
 His dive buddy attempted CPR without success.
 He was posthumously promoted to Lieutenant
Commander.
 funeral sponsored and attended by the Thai royal
family was held on 14 July.
