One key to safe driving that has increasingly come to the fore
with the advent of mobile connectivity is avoiding texting while
driving. University of Utah research has demonstrated that the
effect of using either a hands-free or handheld mobile device on
reaction times is equivalent of having a blood alcohol
concentration (BAC) of .08 percent. This exceeds the limit
allowed in all 50 states.
Distracted driving is increasingly recognized as a problem, with
nationwide estimates associating it with 16 percent of fatal
crashes and 5,000 deaths annually. Reflecting the seriousness
of the issue, texting while driving has been banned in 46 states
across the country and talking on a cell phone while driving is
