"Connecting Cyberinfrastructure Back To The Laptop"
Science Gateways today are generally built to provide a web-accessible interface for a particular scientific community to access a combination of software, hardware, and data deployed in an expertly managed computing center. But what happens when the scientist wants to repatriate their data? Or perform some analysis that is not supported by the gateway? Both for the purposes of encouraging innovative workflows and serving an audience with a wide range of computational experience it is important to consider how a gateway can fit into the broader computational ecosystem of a particular researcher or research group. One simple starting point for this is to ask the question "how can the gateway connect back to the laptop?". This talk will consider how this is being done today in science gateways and present some ideas for how this could be expanded in the future.

Abstract:
The state-of-the-art in mining software repositories stores software artifacts from various sources into monolithic relational databases. This puts a lot of querying power in the hands of the software miners, however it comes at the cost of enclosing the data and hamper cross-application reuse. In this paper we discuss four problem scenarios to illustrate that Semantic Web technology is able to overcome these limitations. However, it requires that the software engineering research community agrees on two prerequisites: (a) a common vocabulary to talk about software repositories -- an ontology; (b) a strategy for generating unique and stable references to all software artifacts inside such a repository -- a Universal Resource Identifier (URI).
Scholars usually have to deal with many different type of documents spread in vary stages, especially in the case of big projects. Piles and piles of documents scattered in many folders waiting for tagging, revision, approval or whatever it is that needs to be completed. There are workflow management tools available to help us, but they often are too specialized and somewhat complex to use. So, how can we make them easier and more flexible?
This work was presented in a long paper session at DH 2012 in Hamburg, Germany.

They attempt to give a survey of the technologies, tools, and state of the world with respect to the Semantic Web as of the first half of 2009.
There has been plenty of hype around the Semanic Web, but will we ever see the vision of intelligent agents working on our behalf? This talk introduces the concepts of the Semantic Web as envisioned by Tim Berners-Lee over 10 years ago and compares that vision to where we have come since then. It includes a discussion of implementations such as XML, RDF, OWL (web ontology language), and SPARQL. After reviewing the design principles and enabling technologies, I plan to show how these techniques can be implemented in WebGUI.

Presentation of Meandre: Semantic-Driven Data-Intensive Flows in the Clouds at eScience 2008 by Bernie Acs
Data-intensive flow computing allows efficient processing of large volumes of data otherwise unapproachable. This paper introduces a new semantic-driven data-intensive flow infrastructure which: (1) provides a robust and transparent scalable solution from a laptop to large-scale clusters, (2) creates an unified solution for batch and interactive tasks in high-performance computing environments, and (3) encourages reusing and sharing components. Banking on virtualization and cloud computing techniques, the Meandre infrastructure is able to create and dispose Meandre clusters on demand, being transparent to the final user. This paper also presents a prototype of such clustered infrastructure and some results obtained using it.

Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
