To the People of Texas & All Americans in the World—
Fellow Citizens & compatriots—
I am besieged, by a thousand or more of the Mexicans under Santa Anna — I have sustained a
continual Bombardment & cannonade for 24 hours & have not lost a man — The enemy has demanded
a surrender at discretion, otherwise, the garrison are to be put to the sword, if the fort is taken — I have
answered the demand with a cannon shot, & our flag still waves proudly from the walls — I shall never
surrender or retreat. Then, I call on you in the name of Liberty, of patriotism & everything dear to the
American character, to come to our aid, with all dispatch — The enemy is receiving reinforcements
daily & will no doubt increase to three or four thousand in four or five days. If this call is neglected, I am
determined to sustain myself as long as possible & die like a soldier who never forgets what is due to
his own honor & that of his country — Victory or Death.

Houston immediately took control of
theTexasforcesafter thefall of the
Alamo, and conducted aretreat of the
army to thesiteof theBattleof San
Jacinto, whereon April 21, 1836, his
forcedefeated SantaAnnaand secured
Texas’ long sought independence.
In thefall of that year, Houston was
elected thefirst President of the
Republic of Texas.
After statehood in 1845, Houston
waselected Senator from Texas. Still
later, in 1859, Houston waselected to
serveasGovernor of theStateof
Texas.

15. James Bowie
(1796-1836)

volunteer forcein San Antonio
when Travisarrived with regular
army troops. Thetwo men
shared authority during much of
theSiegeof theAlamo, which
caused somepersonal friction.
But pneumoniadisabled Bowie,
and hewasconfined to hiscot at
thetimeof hisdeath on March 6,

In March, 1836, Davy Crockett,
with 187 others, wasmassacred at
theAlamo. Usually, in battles,
someoneisleft to tell thestory, but
theAlamo had no one. Onehundred
and eighty-seven men for eleven
dayswithstood theMexican army.
When thebattlewasdone, all of the
onehundred eighty-seven brave
Americans, including Davy
Crockett, lay dead on theground;
but with them also lay over two
thousand Mexicans, who had died at
their hands.
