"Oscar: Rapid Iteration with Vagrant and Puppet Enterprise" by Adrien Thebo, Software Engineer, Puppet Labs. Presentation Overview: When trying to debug software problems it's critical to be able to reproduce the original situation, and Puppet Enterprise is no exception to this. The Puppet Labs support team needs a way to rapidly reproduce customer issues across a wide range of operating systems and various versions of Puppet Enterprise. Oscar is a set of Vagrant plugins that handles machine provisioning and configuration to install Puppet Enterprise. It's designed to make building a Puppet Enterprise as simple as running `vagrant up`. While Oscar was originally built for supporting Puppet Enterprise, it provides a general platform for developing and testing against Puppet Enterprise. This talk will go over the history of Oscar, the current state, how it's used, and where to get it. Speaker Bio: Adrien Thebo has been in the Operations/Software development field since 2005, starting at small IT shop in Boise, Idaho. He started at Puppet Labs in 2011 on the Operations team, and used Puppet to run the Puppet Labs infrastructure. In 2013 he transferred to the Community platform team, working with contributors to merge their contributions in Puppet Core. He develops and maintains a number of Puppet modules and tools around Puppet, and when he's not writing code for Puppet then he's probably blogging about it.

We take great care in our back end coding workflow, optimising, automating and abstracting as much as is possible. So why don't we do that with our front end code? We'll take a look at some tools to help us take our front end workflow to the next level, and hopefully optimise our load times in the process! We'll be looking at using Twig templates and optimising them for the different areas of your application, integrating Bower and Gulp for managing assets and processing our front-end code to avoid repetitive tasks - looking at how that impacts the typical Symfony workflow.

"Death of a themer" was presented by James Panton and myself at Frontend United on 14th April 2013. This was a revised and extended talk of the same name presented by James at DrupalCamp London on 2nd March 2013. http://www.slideshare.net/therealmcjim/death-of-a-themer-drupal-camplondon2013 Themers are the magicians who transform what Drupal wants to do into what the designer wants it to do. They work alongside developers and site builders and are usually hammering out CSS files, overriding templates, writing theme functions and scratching their heads. The thing is — and whisper this if possible redundancy concerns you — we can bypass the themer entirely. With some simple configuration, a site builder can get Drupal to output exactly the semantic, lightweight markup that any modern front-end designer would be proud of. The designer can be left alone to write the most appropriate HTML, CSS and JS, while the site builder need only choose a couple of options when putting together content types, views and panels to make Drupal behave. A friendly developer may have to lend a hand every now and then, but that’s it. You can get rid of the themer altogether. This is an extended version of a session James did recently but will take a closer look at the tools and workflow we created and the design principles that initially drove us to this approach.

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical Futures

The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.
