With many factors and risks to consider, identifying the impact of policy change can be a challenge.
Learn why simulation is used to make evidence-based policy decisions, improve program outcomes and deliver services more efficiently to the public.
Using real-life examples from healthcare to smart cities, Tom Stephenson shows the benefits of using simulation for evaluating policy changes.
In 2008, SIMUL8 Corporation and the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement developed Scenario Generator, a strategic simulation software tool for commissioners. A free license was provided to all Primary Care Trusts and these licenses are now being made available to all CCGs and other NHS organisations at no extra cost.
Many PCT users have already taken their licenses to CCGs and into Public Health teams in local government and you can now claim your free Scenario Generator software.
The recent statement of support for using simulation in healthcare from Lord Warner and recent projects with the Year of Care Long Term Conditions and NHS IMAS teams who are using simulation to support improvement has increased NHS interest in this technology and we would be delighted to help you to benefit from using it.
The training session below will help you get started quickly with your license.

The Potential Use of Mobile and Wearable Sensor Devices in the Management of ...Tim Delany
As the rate of information technology increases at an exponential rate, more and more devices and sensors which are capable of harnessing crucial data (such as vital signs) are being integrated into the healthcare ecosystem. The benefit of mobile technologies to intervene and improve health is increasingly becoming a topic of discussion. Through the use of examples from three primary chronic conditions, this report will critically analyse the scientific findings of the use of these sensors and the possible impact they might have on future diagnoses and improving the overall efficiency and accuracy of healthcare management. This report will specifically interrogate the multiple technologies which can be integrated for cardiovascular problems, diabetes and chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder. The overall findings concluded that these novel technologies would provide considerable improvements to healthcare, but would have to overcome several obstacles prior to total integration. A cost-benefit analysis would have to be done to overcome the previous more traditional approach.
This month we're discussing Patient Safety and how simulation is being used to reduce patient harm.
Patient safety is a serious global public health issue. Estimates show that in developed countries as many as 1 in 10 patients is harmed while receiving hospital care (World Health Organization, June 2014).
In this workshop we will examine how other high risk sectors use simulation to improve safety and how simulation could be more widely applied in healthcare. We will demonstrate simulations of delays, interruptions, adoption of best practice and interventions in sepsis.
SIMUL8 Director of Healthcare, Claire Cordeaux, discusses her experiences of developing and implementing population health strategies in the UK National Health Service, Canada, and Australia.

SIMUL8 Healthcare: Cross-boundary, Cross-sector – using simulationSIMUL8 Corporation
From a recent presentation to the Cumberland Initiative. SIMUL8 Healthcare's Executive Director of Health and Social Care Claire Cordeaux discusses how simulation can be used to model integrated care to support people outside hospital. Simulation allows us to understand the impact of changing service utilization on; flow, cost and capacity / resource.
Claire also presents case studies on how simulation was used in Hepatitis C screening to prevent liver disease, and to identify and manage patients with multiple conditions as part of the Year of Long Term Conditions Year of Care.
This workshop will look at patient care pathways and demonstrate how simulation can combine process flow across; services, clinical best practice and the progression of patients through disease states, to test the impact of improvement initiatives on patient care, outcomes, costs and resource utilization.
Using examples from recent projects on simulating care pathways within HIV services, and simulating future service needs for dementia care, we show the results of combining disease progression with service utilization.
In the workshop, we’ll consider what the ideal pathway model would look like and invite you to work with us to build a pathway using our latest technology.
Delivering care outside of the hospital is seen as one of the ways of managing increasing demand for healthcare services, whilst also improving patient outcomes. Effective delivery means a huge rethink of service delivery as a system as well as by organizations, and whilst there are some blueprints for good practice, on the whole the evidence for system-wide management is sketchy.
Simulation is a really helpful technique to use when trying to predict uncertain futures. Bringing together clinical evidence for best practice with available data for current service utilization for population groups and ideas for improvement into a simulation can help drive forward decision-making for change, underpinned with the best evidence available.
This workshop will draw on a variety of projects and models to consider how simulation can help to model the impact of care outside hospital. From prevention activity (planning a new obesity and weight management service), to applying an annual capitated tariff for people with chronic disease, to managing workload in community teams, we will examine how simulation has been helping to understand the current position and to develop and negotiate a plan for change across health systems.

SIMUL8 Healthcare: Designing New Spaces and Processes with simulationSIMUL8 Corporation
In this workshop, Brittany discussed how simulation can be used to design new spaces and processes, not just improve the status quo.
Calling on her experience as an ASQ-certified Six Sigma Black Belt and her work on a wide variety of performance improvement projects – many of which incorporated simulation - Brittany presented a case study that demonstrates the interconnected nature of pre/post surgery operating processes and inpatient census.
We also looked at the project's unexpected findings, as well as shared insights into using simulation as a change management and leadership communication tool.
It seems like everybody is implementing Lean these days. Is simulation just one more tool to be dusted off for only the really big, complex, messy projects? Or is there a better way to integrate with Lean that makes the most of both of these tool-sets? SIMUL8’s US Healthcare Lead and Six Sigma Black Belt Brittany Hagedorn will answer these questions and more during our monthly simulation workshop.

Tom Stephenson, Senior Healthcare Consultant at SIMUL8 Corporation, will discuss his experience of designing laboratory simulations and share best practice techniques.
Through real examples, you'll learn how SIMUL8 has been used to test laboratory improvements, including:
- Assessing the impact and ROI of new machinery
- Selecting optimal layouts
- Understanding how the current system will cope with demand changes
- Testing total lab automation
As we spread the word about how valuable simulation can be – and how it can inform better decision making – we are frequently asked to speak about how simulation fits into the bigger picture
In addition, improvement practitioners (including Lean, Six Sigma, industrial engineers, and many other varieties of backgrounds) often have concerns about how simulation can interface with their own practice, or if it is the competition.
In my experience, you can achieve more from your improvement efforts by integrating simulation into your standard tool belt. It does not replace, but rather complements traditional change management approaches.
In healthcare our key resource is our people, but how do we plan for the people we need without knowing the activity they need to deliver?
In the workshop we drew on real service transformation projects where simulation has been used to examine staffing requirements by skill mix, both now and in the future. Learn how simulation was used to re-work nursing roles at an outpatient procedure clinic to release more time to care, and how staff availability impacted patient flow at an outpatient surgery clinic. We also demonstrated how these results could be used for whole system workforce planning.

Keep Your 3-Legged Stool Upright! Leading Successful Manufacturing ProjectsSIMUL8 Corporation
Today, managers are faced with conflicting objectives and significant pressure to ensure that manufacturing projects are delivered within budget, at a high quality and on time.
The “3-Legged Project Management Stool” is an excellent way to describe the balancing act that is required.
Discrete event simulation lends itself to all three of these facets, and that is why most large manufacturing companies are using it to reduce risk and keep up with the competition.
During this webinar former Ford Motor Company employee, Brian Harrington explores the concept of the three-legged stool. Based on his recent Whitepaper, Brian will discuss how simulation can play a key part in the successful completion of a manufacturing project when the conflicting objectives of cost, quality and time all need to be delivered on successfully.
In this webinar session, Dr Tracey England, Mathematical Modeller and Research Fellow at ABCi, shared three case studies of how simulation software has supported healthcare improvements at Aneurin Bevan University Health Board.

Understanding User Needs and Satisfying ThemAggregage
https://www.productmanagementtoday.com/frs/26903918/understanding-user-needs-and-satisfying-them
We know we want to create products which our customers find to be valuable. Whether we label it as customer-centric or product-led depends on how long we've been doing product management. There are three challenges we face when doing this. The obvious challenge is figuring out what our users need; the non-obvious challenges are in creating a shared understanding of those needs and in sensing if what we're doing is meeting those needs.
In this webinar, we won't focus on the research methods for discovering user-needs. We will focus on synthesis of the needs we discover, communication and alignment tools, and how we operationalize addressing those needs.
Industry expert Scott Sehlhorst will:
• Introduce a taxonomy for user goals with real world examples
• Present the Onion Diagram, a tool for contextualizing task-level goals
• Illustrate how customer journey maps capture activity-level and task-level goals
• Demonstrate the best approach to selection and prioritization of user-goals to address
• Highlight the crucial benchmarks, observable changes, in ensuring fulfillment of customer needs

Implicitly or explicitly all competing businesses employ a strategy to select a mix
of marketing resources. Formulating such competitive strategies fundamentally
involves recognizing relationships between elements of the marketing mix (e.g.,
