Sebastian Vizcaino, a Spanish soldier and merchant who moved to Mexico in 1583, led an early exploration of Alta California in 1602 while seeking permission to establish pearl fisheries. His expedition discovered Monterey Bay and named locations including San Diego Bay while navigating the coast, though it faced storms, sickness and other hardships, before returning to Acapulco in 1603.
