2. What is terrorism ?
Unlawful use of violence
and intimidation against
civilians in the pursuit of
political aims.

3. 9/11 Attack September 11, 2001
Four terrorist attacks by the al-Qaeda.
Hijacked 4 US based airlines.
Killed around 3000, among them 343 fire fighters.
In 2004, Al-Qaeda accepted its involvement.
The group still claims 9/11 as its greatest success.

4. Impact of 9/11
• 2001 recession was an eight-month economic
downturn.
• It leads to spend biggest budget in military sector
• Military spending increased by 50 percent
• US vs the World---World military budget was $1.6
trillion in the World. The U.S. accounted for 37
percent of the total (2015).

5. US response …
• NATO invaded Afghanistan (Bush launched the
War in Afghanistan) in Oct. 2001.
• Formation of Department of Homeland
Security in response to the attacks, in 2002.
• Bush Doctrine(FP): This was applied
particularly in the Middle East to counter
international terrorist organizations.

6. US response
• On March 21, 2003, President Bush sent troops into Iraq as
they found Saddam Hussein was aiding al-Qaida operatives.
• Osama bin Laden, the mastermind behind the 9/11 attacks,
killed by US force in May 2, 2011.
• After killing mastermind, Prz Obama announced the
beginning of large-scale troop withdrawals from
Afghanistan.

and bases in over 50 nations

8. Terrorism after 9/11…
• Suicide attack seen in across the global since
9/11
• The suicide bombings in major cities of PAK
and AFG.
• Use of suicide bombers and improvised
explosive devices (IED) has become the
favorite weapons for terrorist attacks.
• Islamophobia

9. Terrorism after 9/11
• Number of terrorist incidents jumped nearly
460% since 2002.
• 60 % of attacks occurred in Irak and AFG.
• Iraq, Pak, AFG, Indian and Philippine are top 5
countries where maximum attack happened
since 9/11

10. Impact in South Asia
• Most terrorized region of the world is South
Asia.
• India, which had already become a core ally of
the US against its global war on terrorism.
• India, Pakistan and Afghanistan
• As cross border terrorism
• state-sponsored terrorism
• Religious terrorism
