Overview
Traffic control device is the medium used for communicating between traffic
engineer and road users. Unlike
other modes of transportation, there is no control on the drivers using the
road. Here traffic control devices
comes to the help of the traffic engineer. The major types of traffic control
devices used are- traffic signs, road
markings , traffic signals and parking control. This chapter discusses traffic
control signs. Different types of
traffic signs are regulatory signs, warning signs and informatory signs.
Requirements of Traffic Control Devices
1) Fulfill a Need. The MUTCD states that all traffic control devices should fulfill a need.
...
2) Draw Attention. ...
3) Clearly Convey Meaning. ...
4) Command Respect From Motorists and Other Road Users. ...
5) Allow Adequate Time for Response. ...
Types of traffic signs
There are several hundreds of traffic signs available covering wide variety of
traffic situations. They can be classified into three main categories.
1. Regulatory signs:These signs require the driver to obey the signs for the
safety of other road users.
2. Warning signs:These signs are for the safety of oneself who is driving and
advice the drivers to obey these signs.
3. Informative signs: These signs provide information to the driver about the
facilities available ahead,
and the route and distance to reach the specific destinations
Regulatory signs
These signs are also called mandatory signs because it is mandatory that the
drivers must obey these signs. If the driver fails to obey them, the control
agency has the right to take legal action against the driver. These signs are
primarily meant for the safety of other road users.
A regulatory sign is used to indicate or reinforce traffic laws, regulations or
requirements which apply either at all times or at specified times or places upon a
street or highway, the disregard of which may constitute a violation, or a sign in
general that regulates public behavior in places open to the public.
Regulatory Signs. Regulatory signs tell you what you must do, or must not do,
according to the law. The regulations posted on these signs advise you about
speed limits, the direction of traffic, turning restrictions, parking restrictions, etc.
Warning sign
Warning signs or cautionary signs give information to the driver about the impending
road condition. They advice the driver to obey the rules. These signs are meant for the
own safety of drivers. They call for extra vigilance from the part of drivers. The color
convention used for this type of signs is that the legend will be black
A warning sign is a type of sign which indicates a potential hazard, obstacle, or
condition requiring special attention. Some are traffic signs that indicate hazards on
roads that may not be readily apparent to a driver.
The caution sign alerts emergency responders and visitors of potential hazards
and precautions for entry. Warning signs alert personnel and visitors to health and
safety hazards beyond those identified in the caution sign. Specific warning signs
may be required based on the type of hazard present.
These signs are meant to provide information on direction, destination, roadside facilities,
etc. to the road user. Following informative road signs helps a driver in saving time,
reaching destination without wandering around.
INFORMATIVE SIGNS
An informative sign is a very legibly printed and very noticeable placard that
informs people of the purpose of an object, or gives them instruction on the use
of something. An example is a traffic sign or a stop sign. Information signs have
been growing in visibility due to the explosion of sign technologies.
These signs are meant to provide information on direction, destination, roadside
facilities, etc. to the road user. Following informative road signs helps a driver in
saving time, reaching destination without wandering around. These signs are
generally facilitators to the driver.
4.TRAFFIC SIGNS FOR KIDS AND
STUDENT
Parents love their children more than anyone and
anything else in the world and do all they can to keep their
kids safe and secured. However, it’s not always possible to
accompany one’s children everywhere and the safety of kids
on road is a matter of great concern. While kids stay exposed
to risks everywhere, it’s on the road that the danger is
heightened. However, the authorities have seen to it that
appropriate signs for the safety of children are put up at places
like school or playing zone
STOP SIGN
This is the most easily recognizable sign. It is important
for every kid to know that a Stop sign is put up at places
where the driver needs to bring his vehicle to a halt. This
allows the kids to pass through the road without any risk of
an accident.
SCHOOL CROSSING SIGN
As is self-explanatory, these signs are put where children
cross the street right outside the school.
6.IMPORTANCE OF TRAFFIC SIGNS IN DAILY LIFE
As per official data, almost 400 road accidents happen in India
every day. Also, as per statistics shared by WHO, road mishaps
cost almost 3% of the total gross domestic product of a country. Hence, the road signs
play an important role in the daily life of
all road users.
Conclusion
Traffic sign recognition is a first step on the way to developing context-
aware cars. But this context cannot be reduced to traffic signs, even if
we are talking about visual information. Cars should be able to
understand current conditions and to interpret visual information in a
context-situated way. In this scenario, traffic signs are just another
source of information and the presence of pedestrians or the
evaluation of road condition are essential cues for taking the most
appropriate decisions. The context-based approach to traffic sign
perception stands as valuable application of advanced computer vision
and for this reason in the coming years we are likely to see a great
many interesting scientific results in this area.
