The year has started with a bang, and it seems
that we're already in the thick of the country's
calendar of events. One of the nice things about
being in media is that you get a good sense of
the nation's pulse through all the invitations
and press releases we receive from government
entities, organisations, companies and
businesses. As part of our corporate philosophy
we build partnerships with other media (see
the photograph of Tempo's Manal al Minhali
and myself, with Emirati actress Samira Ahmed
at Abu Dhabi TV). While we try to bring you
all that we can in these pages there's just not
enough space, so do check in on our website
www.tempoplanet.com regularly for a more
comprehensive review of what's going on.
This month we bring you more community
happenings and we cast our spotlight on
entrepreneurs, artists, writers, musicians and
those who are giving back with their passion
and pushing the envelope of positive change.
We bring you Emirati artist Maitha al Khayat,
who is promoting Arabic literature for kids,
the White Cube trio who is nurturing locally
based bands, stunning photos from the Abu
Dhabi Photographers and of course all of our
wonderful regular features.
Peace and happiness,

…yeez can slice and dice umpteen different approaches to
maintaining a Blog… as a writer, the conventional wisdom tells
yeez it helps to get yeez ‘presence’… well, I think there’s also
as many definitions of ‘presence’ as yeez can think of… this ol’
Jurassic’s been scribbling away at this Blog thing for a coupla
years now, and must confess the driving force for maintaining
it has gradually changed… initially I knew as much about
blogging as I did about Mexican knitting patterns or Persian
Hieroglyphics… in pursuit of extending readership reach, the
Blog was an addendum to the other SOSYAL NETWURKIN
channels I dabble with… Twitter, Facebook, Goodreads, and
LinkedIn… I laptop-tapped maybe twice a week, with no
rhythm or purpose, no base, no direction… then a few things
started to click, mentally, not just on the Mac… the content,
which the cognoscenti will tell yeez is paramount, began to
take shape… a regularity of style evolved… the crime thrillers
lived in the novels, and that can be pretty heavy-duty violent
stuff… and any quill-scraper knows it’s vital to have your
‘Author’s Voice’ in the books… I found the Blog forming into
an intrinsically different kind of writing… much like cartoons
cater to short-term attention from readers, so also, most
Blogs attract the same probable eyeball time… ideally for me,
anything between 300 and 400 WURDS is plenty, but that’s
not set in stone… the Blog becomes the ‘Author’s Brand’… a
brand is by definition recognizable… mine attempts to be the
tongue-in-cheek, humorous, reflective flow of consciousness
of a comparative newbie… an independent, self-publishing
plume-pusher… an old fogie from a separate career, stumbling
through the maze that is the new-fangled reality called the
Internet… and somehow coming out the other side, still
bewildered, but surviving, hopefully successfully… populating
the Blog occasionally are a couple of characters, Mabel, and
Matron… Mabel is best described as an almost imaginary
presence, somewhat akin to the invisible rabbit, Harvey, that
the great actor James Stewart conversed with in the movie
of the same name… that allows for ‘asides’ and commentary
to flow… Matron is the character who keeps the writer in
check occasionally by the administering of a huge syringe
loaded with no-one quite knows what, and it’s impossible to
tell whether or not she’s also a figment of the writer’s addled
brain… the biggest change in the impact the Blog has on me
is that it permits me to indulge another kind of writing from
the novels, and doing it almost daily dictates a discipline I
welcome… it now also connects automatically with all my
other SOSYAL NETWURK linkages, hitting a possible 15,000+
readers for every Blog Post… and most importantly… IT’S FUN
and I’m LUVVIN IT!…
…Authors…why bother doing a Blog?…

Acclaimed author Amy Tan transcends the
fraught contemporary Chinese-American
relationship by delving into a story of betrayal,
love, and courtesan houses in the heart of
colonial Shanghai.
Spanning three generations, The Valley of
Amazement visits mother-daughter relationships
across two continents and two very different
cultures. Mostly told in the voice of Violet, an
American girl who — tricked into becoming a
virgin courtesan in a second-class establishment
and separated from her American mother, Lulu—
is put to the test when she discovers that all she
had thought about herself was a lie.
Evocatively written, Amy Tan’s The Valley of
Amazement reintroduces tropes and themes
which have previously launched her into fame—
as was the case with her debut blockbuster novel
The Joy Luck Club (1987). Firmly centered on
Violet’s—and later, her daughter Flora’s—quest
to understand her true identity in a world of
seduction and trysts, Tan evocatively delves into
the psyches of these three women by allowing
herself to write in different point of views.
Forced to become a “virgin courtesan” at
fourteen, Violet learns how to use the game of
seduction just as her mother used to effortlessly
when she ran one of the most prestigious
courtesan houses of Shanghai.
With the help of Magic Gourd, a Chinese
courtesan and old acquaintance of Violet’s,
the latter is taught the intricacies of Chinese
traditions and culture within the realm of
seduction and courtesan houses. And although
Violet masters this art, her young heart still
longs for a love that is pure, often to be rudely
awakened to the disappointment of her fate.
With a storyline that dismantles the role of the
mother as a nurturer and protector, relationships
plagued with betrayal and double-standards,
female friendships remain constant and are
reproduced with each generation, echoing the
permanence of family history as Violet is put in
the same position as her mother was 14 years later.
Amy Tan seldom gives her characters predictable
“happy” endings in the sense that, much like her
previous work, Tan provides the reader with
a tangible storyline, in which the characters are
thrust into filled a vicious cycle of tragedy. With the
help of amazingly researched facts of 20th century
China, the title of the novel gradually unfolds itself
within the storyline as they represent meaning to
these three important women.
A melodrama that brings together cultures from
opposing spheres, The Valley of Amazement is a
novel that shows once again Tan’s inner conflict in
her history, as a child born in America to Chinese
immigrants. Staying close to the themes she so
well writes about, Tan sheds a new light on the
complexities and hardships on being a woman—
and a courtesan—in up-and-coming China.

AL WAHDA MALL SET TO HOLD
WORLD RECORD ATTEMPT
Jan 31 – Feb 1
Central Atrium
Al Wahda Mall, Abu Dhabi
Al Wahda Mall, the city’s largest
retail destination in collaboration
with Eva Clarke plans on setting
two Guinness World Records
titles for most number of knuckle
pushups within 1 hour and in 24
hours. Also known as the ‘Fittest
woman in Abu Dhabi’ Clarke will
attempt to set a new record in
front of the Guinness World
Records adjudicator.
THE CAUSE: ‘health’, an initiative
by Al Wahda Mall will not only
support Eva Clarke’s Endeavour to
set a new record, it will also help
create awareness and promote
healthy living among the residents
of Abu Dhabi.
Eva Clarke, the former military
fitness instructor, will be
challenged to beat the minimum
requirements of 7000 pushups set
by Guinness World Records for this
title, which sets the bar quite high
for the super mum of three. Not
only does the event aim to support
and raise awareness for social,
community and charity initiatives,
but it is also part of a larger
attempt to raise US$25,000 for the
Maria Cristina Foundation. Funds
generated from this initiative will
be used to support Maria Cristina
Foundation, which helps educate
children in the Bangladeshi
capital, Dhaka. The foundation
has managed to touch over 650
lives and is aiming to raise enough
funds to help more in need.

TEMPO TRIED & TESTED
BUILD: Fresh minced meat biryani cooked with
aromatic basmati rice.
COMMENT: Noorjahan Biryani is one of Lazeez’
signature Biryanis and once you’ve tasted it you’ll
know why. The biryani pot comes sealed in a roti,
and with a slit of the bread, the incredible aroma
is released! The dish comes with tiny meatballs
that are a refreshing accompaniment not usual
in biryanis. The masala was spot on and the rice
cooked perfectly. Although the blend of rice with
masala didn’t combine quite as smoothly as it
should have, it was in no way a deal breaker.
RECOMMENDATION: Lazeez has over 25 varieties
of biryanis.
Lazeez
NOORJAHAN BIRYANI
(Indian Cuisine)
Biryani is thought to have originated in Persia and brought to South Asia by Persian merchants. It might be known in
different names across the world – ‘kabsa’, ‘majboos’, ‘mandi’, but there’s no doubt that biryani is the king of dishes (and
the dish of kings) across the Middle East and South Asia. No feast is complete without this sumptuous dish, whether it is
eaten alone, or with pickles and curd. That’s why this month Tempo takes you on a biryani tour about town.

BUILD: Rice cooked with biryani spices and
succulent chicken pieces.
COMMENT: This is Pakistani biryani at its best.
The flavours are simple, and very well blended.
Sometimes it is always the simpler fare that is the
tastiest. Succulent chicken pieces are well cooked
and marinated in the perfect amount of masala.
This biryani delivers honest to goodness flavours
that you won’t forget.
RECOMMENDATION: Despite the very unusual
name, this restaurant adds greatvalue to the city’s
culinary diversity.
CHICKEN BIRYANI
(Pakistani Cuisine)
BUILD: Basmati Rice cooked with mild spices
and meat.
COMMENT: One of the greatest accomplishments
of a chef is meat that is cooked to absolute
perfection, on an unforgettable bed of rice. This
entire dish is by far the best in the category; the
rice and meat melt in your mouth and the aroma,
taste and feel of this dish will have you coming
back for more.
RECOMMENDATION: The quantities of their
dishes are huge. One dish can easily satisfy
three people.

TV show I’d like to be most trapped in:
Friends! I love it.
A recent movie that made me cry:
Stuck in love.
A perfect weekend to me is: hanging out on
the beach with friends, going out for lunch
and then going out in the evening with
friends, or to a music concert, followed by a
barbecue/brunch the next day.
I’ve travelled to: French Carribean, Indian
ocean (Seychelles Mauritius), most of
Europe, America, Cuba, Africa. Would love
to go to: Australia, Bali, Thailand, Bora Bora
If I were on death row, my last meal
would have to be: An English roast
dinner or lasagne followed by New York
style Cheesecake.
What today has taught me that I can
improve on tomorrow: that I need to not
worry so much, take it in my stride and to
get practicing my guitar ha.
Big old thank yous go to: my parents and
sister for always being so supportive in
whatever decisions I make and my best
friends too for being that ear to listen.
My purpose in life?: To make music, share
emotion through my lyrics and make people
have a good time during our shows.
Most happy to be stuck in an elevator with:
The queen. Least happy….? Well a serial
killer would never be good!
IIf I could wake up in someone else’s body,
would love it to be: Natalie Portman

MAITHA ABDULWAHAB AL KHAYAT
COVER STORY
“I'm quite a handful and it's hard to pin me down cuz I'm as
busy as a humming bird. I didn't say ‘bee’ because bees sting,
and I don't. People tell me that I'm lively, funny and have a
charming sense of humour. I enjoy helping people, and I'm
kind of like a cheerleader when I see anyone with a hobby.
I would like to add that I'm very ambitious; I'm a bossy mum
and a very proud Emirati, Arab and Muslim woman who
loves, and promotes her culture.
“ I got my creative side from my mum all along. She's very
artistic and I definitely got that from her. But my interest in
books started when I was eight studying in the UK, while my
dad was working on his Phd at Exeter University. I was sent
to the library to improve my English. (Hint: A library isn't a
place you get bullied in - bullies hang out in the playground).
The library was a sanctuary to me; a place where I was able
to let my imagination run wild without restrictions, and
where I immersed myself in the adventures of Charlie and
the Chocolate Factory, and pretended I was Sleeping Beauty
waiting for prince charming to save me with a kiss.
“When I was a 15, I remember keeping
a journal, in which I wrote many
romantic stories and dreamed to be a
romance fiction writer. But I forgot
all about that when I went to college
and started studying business. I forgot
about my creative side for a time, but
funny enough one of my business
projects was to open up a book cafe.
Who knows? I might do that one day.
Fast forward to 15 years later, and now
as a full time mother I have discovered
that bookshops - especially the ones I
like going to - didn't sell good quality
Arabic picture books! My bookshelf
at home was getting crowded with
English picture books, whereas the
Arabic corner had only a couple of
them. It was kind of sad. Then one
day, my sister who used to hate to find
me with my nose stuck in a book (she
liked to play with Barbie dolls), dared
me to write a story. She asked me,
“after all these years of reading and
reading and reading, and nothing has
come out of you till now!” That was a
wake up call. I asked myself, “is there
no one out there who will write decent
Arabic picture books for our Emirati
children?” Then I rolled up my sleeves
and start cooking: I put on my business
hat, wore my creative apron and
waved my wand. Voila!

“I'm very proud of my books, because
each one of them just came out on its
own. For example, "I Love My Dad's
Long Beard" was inspired by how much
my children just adored their daddy's
long beard. As for "My Own Special
Way," I was hoping that it would be my
passport to becoming an international
author. It won an award in Children's
Forum in Al Riyadh in 2012, and was
shortlisted for the Marsh Award 2013
best books in translation 2013. “My
Own Special Way” focuses on the how
a young girl can't seem to decide how
to wear her hijab. Does she copy her
four sisters? Or find her own way in
the end?
“I'm also happy with two more of my
books that have been released this
year "When A Camel Craves Logaimat,"
and the funniest and most daring
of my books, “The Runaway Louse"
which delighted children, but had
parents cringing at seeing a louse as the
protagonist of a children's book!
“I was an Ambassador of the UAE
Board on Books for Young People
(UAEBBY) for a couple of years, but
have now have been promoted to
Board Member. My role, with the
other members, is to promote positive
change in children's literature, raise
awareness and encourage love and
respect for the reading, writing and
illustrating of children's books. UAEBBY
is a wonderful hub for children's picture
book enthusiasts, offering them a wide
range of workshops to improve their
skills and knowledge, and to apply them
almost immediately.
“I would like to give more to my country
by writing and promoting great books
for our society and nations around the
world. I would love to see my books
translated in other languages. And I
do hope that I will have managed to
open up my book cafe one day, so that
kids can come and enjoy book readings,
while their parents lounge comfortably
in the knowledge that their kids are
learning while having a blast.
“I say to aspiring authors don't be
afraid of your ambitions, and don't
let anyone tell you can’t do it. Believe
in yourself, and yes, it really is better
late than never. It took me 30 years to
discover who I am and what I can do.
I didn't have anyone then to encourage
me. If you don't, I'm here. And I'm easy
to find.”

One feels good to be told “what
beautiful skin you have” or “you
look the same way you did ten
years back’ or “you just don’t look
your age” and so on. But that kind
of achievement does not happen
by waving a magic wand! Perhaps
our grandmothers had the good
fortune of leaving it to nature
through a combination of organic
food, an unadulterated atmosphere
and a tension free environment.
The 21th century is not the same,
and since skin is the largest organ
of the body, it is vital that we take
care of it from head to toe.
These are the five steps of a daily
skin care regimen.
1. Cleansing
A cleanser opens the pores on the
skin and removes embedded grime
and dirt whereas soap and water
only removes surface dirt. There
are different kinds of cleansers,
creamy which is best for dry skin,
and gel, which is great for normal
or combination or oily skin.
Wet the face and apply the
cleanser all over face and neck
in gentle circular upward strokes
with the balls of your fingers.
Wash off with tap water or cleanse
with facial cotton/tissue. When
wiping your face with a towel do
not rub, just dab.
rejuvenates and hydrates the skin -
and this is best done while asleep. It
should be applied after cleansing
and toning.
5. Eye cream
The eye area is sensitive, delicate and
prone to allergies. There is no natural
moisture under the skin in that area
and hence the fines lines and crow’s
feet appear faster. Cleansing the eye
area should be done with a specific
eye cleanser which is hypoallergenic
and dermatologist tested. Cleansing
the eye area should be done using
outward to inward movements to
prevent stretching of the skin.
Eye make up should be removed
however late you get home, and
it’s especially important to remove
mascara or eye shadow. A lost
eyelash takes a year or more to grow
back, or may never grow back, while
pigmentation in the eye shadow
could discolour your eyelids over a
period of time.
There are other steps for taking care
of your skin, but for starters this is
good. These basic skin care steps
take around five to seven minutes
every morning and every evening/
night. It is time you should dedicate to
yourself however busy you are.
2. Toning
The pores that have been opened by
the cleanser need to be closed, and
that’s what a tonic water or astringent
(for oily troubled skin) does. Take some
toner on a facial tissue or cotton and
gently dab all over face avoiding the
eyes. The toner removes any traces
of the cleanser and tightens the skin
by closing the pores. With advanced
technology toners may not be available
as part of a regimen, and that could
be because the effects of a toner are
incorporated into the cleanser itself.
However if you do get one as part of the
package do include it.
3. Day Moisturiser
Moisturisers seal the moisture that’s
below the skin, making it plump and
firm. It also nourishes the skin with
the various ingredients that are in
day creams, like Vitamin E, liposomes,
anti- ageing, sun protection factors
(SPF, minimum recommended 25 to 30
factor) and anti- bodies that help fight
damage from environmental elements.
After cleaning and toning, dot your
face and neck with the moisturizer,
and massage gently in upward
outwardstrokes with the balls of your
fingers. Never neglect your neck as
that’s where the age first shows!
4. Night Moisturiser
Many of us skip this step. A night cream
is richer in consistency; it revitalizes,
YOU TOO CAN HAVE BEAUTIFUL SKIN

With the holidays behind us, its
time for many of us to leave our
families behind. This poem is
dedicated to mom.
Throughout our childhood, my mom
was always there for us.
It was her job (or so we thought) to bake
and sew, to care and fuss.
She'd host our parties, watch our sport,
Help with homework or build a fort.
My mom is in my first sweet sip
of tea each morning, And the shuffle
of slippers down the passage as the sun
comes up.
She's the rich, chocolate colour in a
mohair rug, The sure comfort of my
hot water bottle.
She’s the crackle of gift-wrapping on
Christmas morning, And the twinkle of
lights in the tree.
I can hear her voice humming as
I carve the turkey.
She’s the wafting aroma of perfume
She's the lipstick smudge kiss on
my cheek, The swish of her evening
gown slipping out the door.
She’s the sound of applause as I walk
on stage, And the face in the crowd
I instinctively seek.
She laughs alongside me and is in
each tear that I shed.
She was my first love, my very
first friend Her voice reminds me to
apply sun block, Wear a smile,
walk up straight.
My mom is the place that I came from,
the home I return to, The directions
I follow on my journey through life.
My mom is ALL of these things,
and so much more... My mom will
always be here Beside me.

Many years ago, Aisha lived with
her parents and brothers in humble
tents in soft yellow sand. Aisha
spent every day cooking
and sewing.
One day, Aisha went for a walk to
get some fresh air and wandered
away in a daydream. When she
realized that she was very far from
home, she didn't know whether to
turn right or left. “My parents will
miss me and will look for me,” she
thought. She saw a camel eating
from a ghaff tree. Aisha thought,
“If nobody comes, I can eat from
this tree.” As night fell, Aisha
became scared and hungry, so she
approached the ghaff tree.
Aisha forgot to say, “Bism Allah”
before putting her hand on the tree.
Suddenly, she fainted. The next
morning, she woke up in a different

place and saw a handsome man
sleeping. She called to him, “Who
are you?”
The man’s name was Sultan.
Blushing, she said, “I lost my way.
Where did you find me?”
Sultan replied, “I found you near the
ghaff tree. What happened?” Aisha
told him everything.
Suddenly, she started shouting like
a man, saying words that could not
be understood. Sultan ran to his
parents. When his mother arrived,
she read passages from the Holy
Quran. Aisha calmed down and fell
asleep. His parents called the Imam,
who put his hand on Aisha’s head
as he read the Holy Quran. When
Aisha shouted incomprehensibly,
the Imam said, “One of the ghaff tree
jinnis went inside Aisha's body. You
need to bring the Imam from the
next village. He knows how to get
it out.” Immediately, Sultan and his
father set off on camels.
After two weeks, Sultan finally
brought the Imam who removed
the jinni. Aisha was then returned
to her family. When Sultan met
Aisha's father, he told him what had
happened, and asked him if he could
marry her. The father said, “If Aisha
approves, it is OK with me.” When
Aisha accepted, it made Sultan the
happiest man in the world.
Eventually they married and Aisha
knew that she had learnt the real
meaning of happiness.
ZAYED UNIVERSITY’S AL KHARAREF STORYTELLING CLUB was created to enrich the
legacy of the Emirati storytelling tradition and contribute to the revival of this important cultural
heritage within the United Arab Emirates.
Last year, the Club in partnership with the Abu Dhabi Music and Arts Foundation exhibited Story
Mile a collection of 48 original fables and folktales, written by students from the Academic Bridge
Program, illustrated by College of Arts and Creative Enterprises majors and translated by ZOWD
volunteers into the language of its characters, Emirati dialect.
The tales, which are soon to be published in a book, share not only the storytelling traditions of
the Emirates, but have also introduced other key aspects of Emirati culture. These latest stories
are creating new footprints in Emirati's storytelling foklore, while preserving and reintegrating 24
archetypical traditional characters researched by Master Storyteller Abdul Aziz Al Mussallam and
designated by the Department of Culture, Heritage and Information as genuinely Emirati back into
the cultural landscape.
And so, there he was, perspiration
caressing his back and a migraine
slowly developing into a red giant in the
interior of his skull. There was still no
sign of the carnival.
‘MOM!!’ he yelled for what seemed like
the thousandth time.
‘Yes, Dave, I think we’re almost
there… Shouldn’t be more than five
minutes now…’
‘Ugh. That’s what you said five minutes
AGO, mom.’
Adults. He never understood them. He
always thought that if hypocrisy should
be considered a crime, the adults of
the world had to be the first ones to be
prosecuted. But then again, he would be
one among them in not more than a few
years. Dave wished his thoughts could
at least wander off to some unknown
abyss while his mother made a failing
attempt to guide them to the city’s
annual carnival. But the dead dry heat
of the Canadian summer was taking
its toll. Bred in the Middle East, one
would have thought that summer in
the subtropics would be a cakewalk for
Dave… but the lack of humidity and the
sudden temperature rise was burning
a hole in his head. ‘Damn you, Kristal,’
he silently cursed his five year old sister
for engineering the plan. He began
kneading his temples as they started
throbbing again.
After a good 15 miles, the carnival
seemed much more inviting than
before. Dave managed to lose his family
in the first ten minutes of his entry and
wandered off into the crowd.
He wasn’t a sucker for these kinds of
things. He was the regular football
playing, FIFA crazy, GTA-V on a
normal day kind of guy. Carnivals
with clowns, trapeeze performers and
tattoo artists weren’t his jam. As he
ventured further into the jungle of
lights, cotton candy and bizarre stalls,
he was suddenly startled by a tap on
his shoulder. He whipped around,
expecting to see Kristal gobbling on a
stick of cotton candy and teasing him,
but saw a signboard blinking neon out
of the blue. Intrigued, he hopped in the
direction of the sign, with a clear head
for the first time in hours, but with his
heart in his mouth.
‘David Leon Archer. Well well, as heavy
the name, so mighty the boy…’ she
rasped in a grating voice. Tarot cards
lined the tables, charts of astronomical
and other origins plastered the walls,
bones, feathers and tails served as
streamers. A chill ran down Dave’s
spine. This wasn’t good. This wasn’t
good at all.
‘W…wait… How do you know my
name?’ Dave whimpered. ‘The touch
and the scent leave a merry mark in
the eh…eh…aaiirrrr,’ she sang whilst
dancing before seating herself in front
of a crystal ball. ‘Are you a… um… a
witch?’ he asked, immediately biting
his tongue for being so stupid. What if
she turned him into a frog?
She suddenly tipped her head
backwards and curled her lips into a
ghastly shadow of a smile.
‘And this ball shows me
Where you’re soon to be
Amidst the crowd and making merry
When distracted, you’ll be very
The hint of gold attracts you
Alas, you be the fool!
She sets dark death to consume you
whole The lass with the golden smile
has fulfilled her goal…’
Her laughter ricocheted off the
walls like a bat’s call. Her black cloak
fluttered. Dave was at a loss for
thoughts. His mind ordered him to run,
but his body dragged him towards the
crystal ball. She raised her hands as
if to welcome him. Then suddenly he
overcame his paralysis and fought
her off him; scratching, pulling her
dark cloak…
‘Dave…Dave!... DAVE!!!’
That was the first thing he heard along
with the smarting of a fresh slap across
his cheek. He slowly opened his eyes to
see his mother leaning over him, with
her black dress torn at the collar.
‘Mom? Mom are you okay? Am I ..’
‘Dave! Dave, honey, are you alright?
Oh Lord. You must have passed out
because of the heat. I’m so sorry it’s my
fault… I shouldn’t have made you stay
out in the sun…’
‘Passed out? So the lady… the golden
tooth… the darkness…?’
‘DARKNESS? Have you been watching
too much Harry Potter lately, Davie?’
chimed Kristal, clearly amused and
smug for being able to take the heat
better than her older brother.
‘Shush, Kristal. Don’t trouble your
brother now. Poor kid,’ chided
her mother.
‘Mom, let’s just get to the carnival and
be done with it, please?’ said Dave
curtly, a little stung by the dream. Or
what was it? A hallucination?
They finally reached the carnival, but
this time it was for real. An uneasy
feeling built up inside Dave… and then
he spotted her. That face, the woman in
the cloak – only now she was dressed
as a gypsy. She saw him looking at her
and grinned.
Her golden tooth glistened in the
afternoon sun.

"WAKE ME UP"
By Sara Bukair
“Wake up!” shouted Fred in excitement. Joe rolled over to ignore his brother.
“Today you have a big day ahead of you!”
“What do you mean?” said Joe in distress, rubbing his face into his pillow
“Don’t you remember?”
“Remember what?”
“Today’s the annual pie baking competition!” Fred explained.
Joe moaned loudly, “Pie baking what??”
“Remember? We signed you up for the competition,” said Fred in
an annoyed voice.
Joe looked at his older brother. “You signed me up! I never liked pies, and I
absolutely hate baking! If there’s a pizza eating competition - then come and
wake me up".

• What is White Cube ?
White Cube is a community focused music
studio in Abu Dhabi where musicians can
rehearse and record their music. The studio
was started by long-time Abu Dhabi resident
musicians looking to revitalize underground
music and arts in the city. White Cube
also specializes in photography and video,
providing all the tools artists need to present
themselves to the world.
• Why the name ‘White Cube’?
White Cube’s original studio was constructed
with German designed polystyrene foam
(styrofoam) sound proofing. The room was
covered from floor to ceiling in small, white,
cube-shaped protrusions, which gave the
feeling of being inside a large “cave-like”
styrofoam cube. We established that being
inside the studio was like being inside the
“White Cube”.
• Any obstacles faced on the way up?
There were barely any obstacles between
us as friends. We've grown up together and
consider ourselves brothers. Our teamwork
has been the business’ greatest strength.
The biggest challenge has definitely been
registering the company. We encountered
a series of unexpected hurdles when trying
to set up the business in Abu Dhabi,
partly driven by the fact that the official
“recording studio” business activity had
never been registered before under the
national media council.
• What is the long term plan for White
Cube?
Our long-term plan is not specifically for
White Cube but rather the local music scene.
We have a future vision of a city where
underground, local music is widely heard and
followed, and we hope White Cube can be a
leader in that movement. As for branching
out – we’d like to be everywhere where
there’s underground music, so we have a lot of
ground to cover!
• You three are also musicians. Do you
every perform together?
In short, Yes. We continue to perform,
however we’re doing it with a twist. We’ve
put aside the idea of releasing an album
and going on tour. Now we focus our
performances on drawing attention to local
artists and, of course, having fun! We learn
and perform cover songs written by local
bands and collaborate with local artists
themselves. Checkout some “White Cube
Shoutouts” on our YouTube channel.
• What makes White Cube
stand out?
We engage our community. Whether fans or
musicians, we ask them to be a part of White
Cube. We give them a platform to express
their thoughts and share their art.
• What could you guys your past selves of
10 years ago?
If we could tell ourselves something ten years
ago, it would be to keep doing exactly what
we were doing, because every skill we have
learned separately all came together to create
a single entity, White Cube.
• What would you tell your future selves?
While we hope never to forget, we would
remind ourselves 10 years from now that
White Cube was built on passion and
community, and to always maintain those
fundamental values.

Steffi Bow, 40 years old from London, has been living in the UAE
for the past 6 years. She is a stencil aerosol artist, who gained her
inspiration from her late Scottish grandmother who always wore bows.
Coincidentally, Steffi was born in Bow, East London! Steffi used her
infatuation with bows to create an image that represents her identity
and uses her art to remember her grandmother. What started with
painting simple bow tags developed into creating far more complicated
life sized stencils.
She explained to Tempo that she started off as a stencil artist and is
now concentrating on spray painting the bow freehand. Hence all the
pictures of bow in various forms!

Tempo writer and award-winning
poet, Paul D, sat down with
university student, director and
videographer, Karina Kiseleva,
to discuss her creative efforts in
the UAE.
PAUL D: Where are you from
originally, and how did you get to
the UAE?
KARINA: I'm half Russian and half
Tatar; born and raised until I was
five years old in Kazan. I came to
the UAE with my mother, who had
just finished law school. She wanted
the family together so instead of
working back home, she decided we
should move to the UAE. My father
had a job opportunity and was
working in Dubai, so we set to make
our lives here as a family.
PAUL D: That's a future geography
lesson for me because I have
never heard of those places. How
did you get into film? Who are
your major inspirations?
KARINA: I wrote a lot, saw a lot,
and heard a lot. I didn't speak
much though, except when it was
necessary. I wanted to portray in
some way the things I had seen
because I saw beautiful similarities
between people and saw common
ground in what we share. Sometimes
we watch a movie and watch
someone’s reality and we see
the similarities, and that’s when
we experience a sudden shift of
perspective. I wanted to learn how
to visually portray all that I had. My
major inspirations, strangely enough
were always revolutionary - and
by that I don't necessarily mean
political, I mean by your every day
people who keep life going. I think my
parents are my major inspirations. They
showed me that nothing is impossible;
they're living proof to me.
PAUL D: You're currently studying film
in university. What comes after that?
KARINA: I want to open up a
production house. I never want to stop
making films.
PAUL D: Your favourite movies and
actors of all time?
KARINA: American History X by
Tony Scott, La Vita E Belle by Roberto
Benigni, The Thief by Pavel Chukhray,
and Cinema Paradiso by Giuseppe
Tornatore. It's really hard to pick a few,
but those come to mind right now. In
terms of actors, Angelina Jolie would
be the one; I always had this strange
connection to the roles she chose. What
are yours?
PAUL D: I have really been in to
international movies lately. I like The
Diving Bell and Butterfly, a French
film, and a Norwegian film called
Headhunters. In the past year, you have
made music videos, a documentary,
and a movie. What is your favorite
medium?
KARINA: Movies. In all honesty, when
you're still studying, you're always
exploring - it's naive of me to say this,
but that is why I joined film school,
mainly to learn how to make films.
Music videos and documentaries have
been my preparation towards making
a picture, and I've been preparing and
writing for so long. Before I leave, I'll
definitely shoot my first short film
as director.
PAUL D: You have done great
videography at the Rooftop Rhythms
show. What are your thoughts about
the show?
KARINA: It's a beautiful place to be
because everybody is there to share
a story that you know is personal to
them, and the audience is there to
relate. I love it because it gives that
sense of belonging and unity.
PAUL D: Have you ever done work in
front of the camera?
KARINA: Yes, I have, and, for a
while, I had thought I liked being
in front of the camera only because
through acting I could express
things I’d kept in. I would release
through my characters. The beauty
in acting is that you get to cheat life;
you get to live more lives through
your characters and it builds an
understanding. I found much more
comfort in being behind the camera
because I get a much broader
perspective on all that is happening.
I'm more aware.
PAUL D: What is your favourite
genre of movie?
KARINA: Drama. Yours?
PAUL D: Suspense. What are your
long term goals? Will you go back
to Russia or stay here in the Middle
East?
KARINA: I would love to go back
home eventually, but right now I’m
looking at building my foundation
and creating my stability here in the
UAE. This place is full of possibility.
PAUL D: It sure is. So, I was
wondering about the possibility of
you paying the coffee bill.
BOTH ENDS OF THE LENS

By Mugdha Sunil Polimera
I was going to start writing something
about some random thing that crossed
my mind, but then a conversation with
a friend just turned my thoughts to a
diametrically opposite direction. When
I think of the mental state that my
generation is in, I feel a bit of panic…
something I can’t put a name to it, but it
isn’t a wholesome feeling. While most
of us are worried about how many
levels of Candy Crush we’ve finished
and how to unlock the next level, there
are news all over the internet of a cruel
world where violence and poverty
seems to be the norm. As we cry over
our parents not letting us indulge in a
dress that we would never wear more
than a couple times, there are videos of
children wailing in pain.
It makes me wonder where our
priorities lie. I know I may be too young
to give my opinions on the problems of
the world, but what good is the future
if we don’t care about our world? The
basic point of my rant is – shouldn’t we
care that the world is falling to pieces?...
That there are people living around us
whose families are unstable in their
own homeland; that there are madmen
in this world who kill and cause chaos;
that the world is slowly becoming a
dump for some people (read most of
us, kids) who don’t really care about
anything more than their wallets or
Foursquare ranking, and those people
who care so much about the wrong
things, that they’re willing to lose their
humanity over it.
I remember asking my dad as a kid
when he was watching the news,
‘Papa, what are they fighting for?’ ‘Good
question,’ my father replied. And to
this day, I haven’t had that question
answered. When people say education
is needed to eradicate poverty, violence
and all our world’s grave social issues,
how far are they right? Do the episodes
in History that show bloodshed and
ruin, stop any war from being started?
It isn’t just “education” that’s missing in
this world – it’s humanity.
All I’m trying to say is go out of your
comfort zone, stop tweeting about your
neighbor’s dog pooping in your garden,
and actually do something that might
make a difference. Donate to charitable
causes, talk to people about things that
matter and most importantly, educate
yourself and those around you on how
to be a better human being. Let’s be the
better generation that strives to make a
more humane tomorrow.
If you don’t start caring now
- then when?

APPLE TO REFUND 32.5,M
TO PARENTS
Many of us did a double take when this
was announced, but yes, it’s official -
Apple will refund customers US$ 32.5m
(AED 119.28 million) after a settlement
with the US Federal Trade Commission
(FTC). The refund agreement settles
long-standing complaints over in-app
purchases made by children without
their parents' consent. Apple will
also be required to change its billing
procedures to make sure customers
have given consent before they are
charged for in-app purchases. The
company said it had settled rather
than take on a "long legal fight".

MY FAV APP: 8 BALL POOL
If you like pool games, Miniclip 8 Ball pool is probably the best one out there so far. It let you play online with your friends and other users, refine your
skills in a practice arena, take on the world in 1 vs 1 matches or enter tournaments to win trophies. You have the option to customize your cue and table as
well. The app is available for free on iPhone, iPod Touch and Android devices.

GONE HOME:
GREAT GAME, BUT NOT FOR
EVERYONE
Gone Home is a PC joint that has
taken the gaming world by storm.
Winning its fair share of game of
the year accolades, it kind of defies
categorization because it does so many
things: it engages you, creeps you out,
keeps you guessing then makes you
think...for a long time after playing.
THE STORY:
You play a college aged girl who returns
home after a year away. Your family's
new place is an old house, left by a
deceased grand uncle who was thought to
be crazy, and yes, the house is rumoured
to be haunted. But no one's home and
you're left to unravel the mystery of the
empty house and what's happened in it
over the past year. While the main story
revolves around your younger sister, you
are also sifting through your parent's lives
and your dead grand uncle's past.
THE GAME:
A first person mouse and keyboard
player, I got used to the movements
quickly enough (I don't play PC games
very regularly). The game progresses
through the slow unfurling of the
mystery which you uncover clue by
clue - primarily through your sister's
documented diary/notes/thoughts but
also through official letters, postcards,
newspaper clippings, school letters and
cassette tapes (yes for those of you who
don't know what cassettes are - it's set in
1995 - look it up) and other odds and ends
of real life. And that's the power of the
game. It feels like real life and a well acted
voiceover rounds it out.
The creepy element is constant. It never
goes away. Everywhere you go, the
unknown follows you and the unknown
is really where true fear lies. The house
is relatively huge and unrelentingly
lonely. That it's raining and thundering
doesn't help. As you near the answer
to the mystery, some gamers will be
pleased, others might be downright
shocked and still others torn in several
directions. But you never really know
what happens until the very end. The
games also forces you to pay attention,
because little scraps of paper can make
a big difference, and looking around can
mean the difference between answers
or being left in the dark. Oh, and there
are some dark moments. Play it and
you'll see what I mean.
SPOILER ALERT:
Bottom line, you won't want to stop
playing it ‘til your done. While the subject
matter that ultimately surfaces may be
controversial for some gamers, it's still
an amazingly designed and written story
that hits at the heart of human nature
and our deepest hopes and fears.
It costs about US$ 20 and is available
through Steam or via direct download
from the game's website. You can finish it
in a couple hours and it'll be worth it. You
can get it for PC, Mac or iOS.

During one week last month in Miami, I
participated in two events that were quite
different but actually similar in showing
how Americans do business. The first
was a VIP luncheon at the Rusty Pelican,
a beautiful restaurant on Biscayne Bay
with views of the sea, cruise ships, and
nearby islands in every direction.
The Greater Miami Chamber of
Commerce hosted 34 ambassadors who
participated in the US State Department’s
Experience America program. The idea
is to give the ambassadors a taste of life
outside of Washington D.C. which like
capitals everywhere is focused only
on government.
So 34 ambassadors – 13 from Europe led
by the German ambassador who spoke
on behalf of the group; 7 from Africa; 6
from East Asia; 5 from South America;
2 from Central Asia; and 1 from the
Middle East – were assigned to tables
among 200 business people from Miami
and other parts of Florida who paid US$
65-75 to attend.
After eight years in the UAE, I had
hoped to meet some representatives
from the region, but there was no one
from North Africa, India, Pakistan, or
Iran, and there was only Oman from
the Gulf. Perhaps it was related to
the weather. It was 25C that day and
gloriously sunny, quite different than in
Washington. I suspect warm weather
in the winter is more important to
Europeans from cold countries.
I sat between the Ambassador of the
Togolese Republic and the Ambassador
of the Republic of Singapore. They were
interested in the business climate in
Miami, but came at it from different
standpoints with their countries at
different economic stages.
Later I found the Ambassador of Bosnia
and Herzegovina – one of seven women
among the 34 ambassadors - and chatted
with her in Bosnian, something I get
few chances to do these days. She’s from
Sarajevo where relatives from my father’s
side of the family live.
Three days later I was at the National
Association of Women Business Owners
(NAWBO) table at the Small Business Expo
in Miami Beach. Unlike the executives
from large companies who attended
lunch with the ambassadors, here were
many individual entrepreneurs who
paid nothing.
The ones with larger companies did
pay for their own booth to exhibit their
products and programs. The organizers
collect money from them, but they also
have to provide people to come to the
booths, which is why entrance is free.
At least 4000 people showed up between
10 am and 5 pm, the vast majority already
running their own companies and the
rest thinking about starting a business.
The Miami Chapter of NAWBO was there
to collect members and business cards.
NAWBO colleague Heather Waldron and
I gathered something like 150 cards from
people interested in the organization
and found one woman who filled out the
membership application form. From now
on they will receive weekly email blasts
announcing NAWBO events. Some may
join eventually, and others will attend
events occasionally, all welcome as we
grow the Miami Chapter.
As a nonprofit, NAWBO was relegated
to the Business Success Pavilion along
with similar groups. We were given
a table, two chairs, and a half-page ad
in the show catalogue for free by the
organizers. Experience has shown them
that nonprofits attract entrepreneurs, and
it makes sense to have some at a small
business event.
We weren’t there to talk about our
own companies, but the reality is that
once you engage in a conversation with
someone, you exchange business cards,
and ours are for Alcat Communications
International for me and Keyes Company
for Heather.
In Miami, in America, it’s all business
all the time. How much you spend to do
business is up to you.

Conducting interviews of
potential employees is both an art
and a skill. Many interviewers
make decisions based on instinct
rather than logic, leading to wrong
hires and high turnover rates,
thereby costing organizations
valuable time and money, as they
have to start the recruiting process
over again. Here are some common
mistakes interviewers make, that
you should avoid:
Relying on first impressions and
biases: Studies have found that the
majority of interviewers make a hiring
decision within the first 15 seconds
of meeting someone. However, these
first impressions are about as reliable as
flipping a coin. In addition, we all have
biases that lead us in the wrong direction.
A bias is the instant bond you feel when
you find out someone is from your same
university or is a woman with similar
experiences, even though you have never
met before. Biases can cause you to hire
who you “like best” instead of the person
“who is best” for the job.
Mistaking nervousness for a lack of
ability: Lets face it we have all been there.
Sometimes we just don’t interview well
and are nervous. An anxious applicant
does not mean the person can't do the job,
just like excellent communication skills
do not signal expertise needed for the job.
And if the people you interview often
seem uncomfortable, take a step back and
consider your approach. Perhaps you are
the problem.
Not asking the right questions: Lazy
interviewers ask well known questions
such as "Tell me about yourself," and
"Where do you see yourself in five years?"
Most job candidates have rehearsed
answers to these familiar questions. A
better way to start is with more specific
questions such as: "Tell me about three
things you learned from your last job."
The best questions are almost always
follow-up questions. Listen to initial
answers. Then ask why. Or when. Or
how. This way you will learn both
positive and negative aspects.
Talking too much and taking over the
interview: Many interviewers don't seem
to remember that they can't learn about
the candidate while they are talking.
Interviews often turn into monologues
and 20 minutes later your hiring decision
is based on whether the candidate was
a good listener. Instead, briefly describe
the opening and company and then let
the candidate speak – for 80% of the time,
at least.
Focusing on experience and education:
Business school studies have determined
that the combination of information,
intelligence and skill account for only
10% of business success. Attitude alone
accounts for 90%. Too few interviewers
ask attitude questions like: "In a normal
workday, what have you done for an
employer that is more than what was
expected?" Or ask behavioral questions
like: "Tell me about the last time a
customer or co-worker got mad at you."
The purpose is to evaluate the person’s
interpersonal skills and ability to deal
with conflict. Or if you want to find out
about problem solving skills ask: "Tell me
about the toughest decision you had to
make in the last six months."
Exaggerating opportunities with the
organization: Interviewers often try
to oversell the candidate on the job,
describing things that might happen
in the future such as potential projects
or opportunities for advancement. The
problem is the candidate translates
"might" into "will," and you have created
expectations you may not be able to meet.
So instead of describing possibilities,
describe current projects and general
career paths. Follow the simple rule: If
you can't promise something, then don't
bring it up.
Turning an average candidate into a great
one: It is easy to tick off items during an
interview: education, good; experience,
fine; attitude, okay… and before you
realize it a person with no negatives
seems like a great candidate. An absence
of negatives is not a superlative. Always
look for excellence. If good enough is all
you find, keep looking.

Year 2014
HOROSCOPE
ARIES
Behave calmly and in a diplomat
way, judge things objectively, don't
rush and don't risk! Take care of
yourself! You're recommended to
avoid excesses, to get enough rest
and to apply various procedures to
escape stress.
TAURUS
February 2014 will be a good
period to have a check of the
general condition or to resume
certain medical initiatives under
the guidance of specialists. Do a
course or some self study!
GEMINI
You cannot afford carelessness and
it's not the right time to take risks.
On the contrary, it'll be a period
in which you'd better find your
balance and strengthen yourself.
It's recommended that you
exercise. Think twice about each
decision you make!
CANCER
You might just be splitting hairs.
You'll need to relax. It would be
helpful to you to talk to somebody
about what has got you worried.
Read a psychology book or a good
detective novel
LEO
February 2014 doesn't seem to
pose problems to Leo people; on
the contrary, it can bring some
solutions to where needed. Express
yourself clearly, but in a diplomat
way, and listen patiently!
VIRGO
You'll need patience, because you
might have to deal with delays or
troubles related to communication.
Some things will not come out
right the first time and will need
to be resumed. Don't give up and
you'll succeed!
One month into the new year; it’s already
going by very quickly. Has 2014 been
good so far? Is it following the plans
that you set out? Are the changes you
determined to make this year happening?
As you know, a change is only becomes
real when you take action on that change.
“A change that makes a positive impact”
is a pretty good definition of innovation.
Innovation is all about change for
the better.
So with the link to innovation made, how
can you increase the chances of having a
“most innovative year?” Here’s some ways
that can help you and your organisation
be brilliantly innovative.
1. Have More Pride
Every organisation exists to serve
customers or clients, whether they pay
for it or not. And we know things could
be done better, but it is just too hard to
change. Well is it? Nobody is saying it
is easy, but surely you could bring some
improvement somewhere? It is a sure sign
of a lack of care if you don’t try to make
things better.
When you care about how you are
perceived, you begin to act differently;
you care. If you can’t take pride in what
you do, then you have a great opportunity
to find something where you can do
something that “will make you feel
proud.” (Thanks Heather Small!)
2. Set Challenging Challenges
So things are pretty good, customers are
happy, bosses are happy – great stuff.
However, you know it is not perfect, and
you want it to improve without making
people feel battered. Set a challenge to
your team. Urge them to be the best, or if
they are the best, to be the best ever!
I heard about a senior IT exec who set a
challenge to his region to cut the time it
took to do tasks by 50% (and they were
pretty lean already). His people rose to
the challenge and managed to reduce
the time tasks took, and overall, they
saved 20% of time. They didn’t hit the
challenge target, but by aiming high,
the department was able to realise
some serious benefit that was thought
to be out of reach. Oh, and it was
seriously celebrated!
3. Share the Tough Targets
A new year means new objectives. And as
hard as you negotiated, you still ended up
with that target that is nigh on impossible
to achieve with current resources and
budget. Do you ignore it and hope
everyone forgets about it? My suggestion
is to share the impossible objective and
seek creative solutions from those doing
the role. They will have the answer, your
job is to listen to them, find it and then
make it happen. Crowdsourcing works
when people understand the challenge,
know that it matters and believe they can
make the difference.
4. Be the Change-Maker
Too often, we can focus too much on the
current. We ignore the future, hoping
that someone else has that one covered.
And then guess what, we never saw the
change coming until it was too late. So
this coming year, determine to be the
“change-maker”. Instead of it being done
unto you, you make the change happen.
Even if you can’t do this, at least look
up and see what’s coming. Set some
time aside each week to find out what’s
happening out there.
5. “Make It So”
Finally, instead of just thinking or talking
about doing something different next
year, turn it into action. As Jean-Luc
Picard of the USS Enterprise would say,
“make it so.”

INNOVATION EXCELLENCE
HOW TO ENCOURAGE
YOUNG MINDS?
By Tomislav Buljubasic
There are hundreds of books
published each year with topic:
Innovation. Many of them are

to know which are worth to read?
My humble choice of books
published in last 10 years
is following:

innovation book I read.
Tom Kelley is giving here
the description of IDEO’s
creative process & their
innovation ecosystem.

THE PLANETARIANS
Is there a difference between a
doctor and a pharmacist? In my
mind the difference is huge, but I
sense a lot of confusion out there.
Who do you see when you’re ill?
A physician, right? So why is it that so
many people go directly to a pharmacist?
Pharmacists are an important member of
the medical family, but their job is NOT
to diagnose illness, but rather to dispense
and explain how to take meds. They
shouldn’t be prescribing medications
without consulting a physician.
It’s so common to meet folks who have
gone to a pharmacist first for a “cold”, and
they get “augmenteeeen” (so as not to use
exact brand names, let’s define this as
amoxicillin/clavulanic acid). Then, they
can’t comprehend why it’s not improving.
It’s a COLD!!! Antibiotics don’t help. They
can actually make you worse. Go check
it out online. While you’re there, look up
how you get Clostridium difficile colitis.
The public seems to think that it’s fine
to walk into a pharmacy and leave with
a bag of meds. Like its “shopping”. If you
show up with a cold, all you need is relief
-paracetamol. However what I tend to
see, is a huge goodie bag full of various
pharmaceutical delights. Bags of meds
are fun, right? People, you need to realize
that medications have side effects and can
interact in wicked and wonderful ways. A
wise man once said, “all meds are poisons,
it just depends on the dose”.
If you’re ill, go see a doctor. That’s
their job. If they think you need meds,
go ahead. If the meds are prescribed
incorrectly or if there is some problem
with the prescription, the pharmacist
will pick up on this. This is their area
of expertise.
An ancient Doctor’s oath, states to “do
no harm”. Those in the health profession
need to remember this. They should also
understand their role and respect it.
This is not about ego and who knows
more, but about doing your job correctly
and staying safe.
At the end of the day, we’re all here to
help. And, to “do no harm”.
We've just seen the World
Future Energy Summit in
Abu Dhabi bring together some
of the world’s largest companies
and countries pioneering and
using renewable energy and
sustainable practices.
WFES took place this year as part of
Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week with
a number of other conferences and
events happening alongside the summit,
including the announcement of the
Zayed Future Energy Prize.
Whilst many deals and collaborations
this year have been announced, with
Masdar Institute developing 5 new
iCenters led by the research projects
the institute is currently leading, and
a new technology agreement signed
with BP to support innovation and
entrepreneurship, the Zayed Future
Energy Prize has also highlighted what
has already been done to make strides to
develop sustainable living.
This year’s lifetime achievement
award winner was Wang Chuanfu,
who founded a battery manufacturing
company that is now one of the world’s
largest manufacturers of rechargeable
batteries, and is the market leader
in electric buses and large scale
storage systems.
He won along side ABB in the
large corporation category
and AbellonCleanEnergy in
the SME Category.
The Zayed Future Energy Prize does not
just award companies who have already
pioneered sustainable solutions, but
also encourages schools to put together
proposals to change thier school’s
energy consumption. A prize is awarded
to 5 schools in different areas of the
world based on their proposal, and they
can then use the money to fund their
planned energy saving changes.
One of the winners this year,
The Tonga High School, is set to become
the first school in the South Pacific to
generate electricity completely by solar
power. Other high schools around the
world plan to develop a combination of
wind and solar power, and also to power
the school by solar to the extent that
they can take their school off the
power grid, and create fuel for cooking
through biogas.
It is amazing to see what these teenagers
can achieve, being the driving force
behind many of these projects. As they
are the ones trying to safe guard their
planet for their generation and future
generations to come.
With all of the development and
agreements from the big energy players
at WFES this year, I can only hope that
those students who are changing their
schools this year, will go on to change
the planet for the better in years
to come.
WHATS IN YOUR BAG O'MEDS?
ZAYED FUTURE ENERGY PRIZE

LIBRA
You'll have a lot of energy and
you'll enjoy being where the
action is. The work will be
profitable especially in the last
part of the month. Practice on
your artistic and literary talents!
SCORPIO
Things will take unexpected
turns when you least expect them
to, and you'll find it difficult to
coordinate your efforts so that you
reach the desired efficiency. Do a
course, learn something new, set
up a blog!
SAGITTARIUS
The best news will regard money.
You'll overcome an obstacle,
a delay or another type of
complication and you'll gradually
come back to normal. Be careful
what you say, promise, write
or sign!
CAPRICORN
You'll have the objectives and the
strategies, and all you need is to see
how you can deal with the details.
Reinforce your capacity
to concentrate, your patience
and discipline!
AQUARIUS
There will be opportunities that
will lead to a reinforced position or
prestige of Aquarius. You'll be in
an excellent shape; you'll overflow
with energy and vitality. Keep
your modesty and the sense
of measure!
PISCES
February 2014 will rather be a
month of review, resumption and
routine activities. New intiatives
will not have much success. Use
your imagination to express
yourself creatively!

My name is Khaled Saeed Abdeen. I'm 43 years
old and from Egypt. I am an Ophthalmology
Surgeon by profession. I have lived and work in
Abu Dhabi for the past nine years.
I spend my spare time walking, jogging,
cycling, playing tennis and following National
Geographic documentaries and travel channels.
I started photography three years ago when
I started attending Mubadala World Tennis
Championship in Abu Dhabi. It was then that I
decided to buy my first DSLR Nikon - an entry-
level crop sensor camera with couple of zoom
lenses to shoot the tennis stars and tennis action.
My photography knowledge comes from reading
books watching multimedia materials and
experimenting. I carry my camera everywhere.
I like landscape, cityscape, street and some macro
photography, and lately have got into black and
white photography as well. I am inspired by the
international famous photographers, Tom Ang
and the famous Steve Macurry.
I’ve learned that you shouldn’t over indulge in
expensive tools. You can learn even on a mobile
phone camera, and then upgrade slowly. Read. Join
a photography community. There is no right or
wrong, and though there are rules, some of them
can be broken in the name of art.

MEDIA LICENCE NO. 1/105866/24295 www. tempoplanet.com The year has started with a bang, and it seems that we're already in the thick of the country's calendar of events. One of the nice things about being in media is that you get a good sense of the nation's pulse through all the invitations and press releases we receive from government entities, organisations, companies and businesses. As part of our corporate philosophy we build partnerships with other media (see the photograph of Tempo's Manal al Minhali and myself, with Emirati actress Samira Ahmed at Abu Dhabi TV). While we try to bring you all that we can in these pages there's just not enough space, so do check in on our website www.tempoplanet.com regularly for a more comprehensive review of what's going on. This month we bring you more community happenings and we cast our spotlight on entrepreneurs, artists, writers, musicians and those who are giving back with their passion and pushing the envelope of positive change. We bring you Emirati artist Maitha al Khayat, who is promoting Arabic literature for kids, the White Cube trio who is nurturing locally based bands, stunning photos from the Abu Dhabi Photographers and of course all of our wonderful regular features. Peace and happiness, Sana Bagersh Managing Editor Bagersh@tempoplanet.com Twitter @bagersh I’ve learned that you shouldn’t overindulge in expensive tools. You can learn even on a mobile phone camera, and then upgrade slowly. 30 d’s note Manal al Minhali, Samira Ahmed and Sana Bagersh, at Abu Dhabi TV studios.

  • 5. 05 TALKING BOOKS THE BLOG A book review by Azza El Masri Azza El Masri is an avid reader and is always looking for new recommendations! If you want her to review a book you fell in love with, or leave a comment on her book bulletin, then you can reach her on: www.tempoplanet.com/category/ talking-books By Seumas Gallacher …yeez can slice and dice umpteen different approaches to maintaining a Blog… as a writer, the conventional wisdom tells yeez it helps to get yeez ‘presence’… well, I think there’s also as many definitions of ‘presence’ as yeez can think of… this ol’ Jurassic’s been scribbling away at this Blog thing for a coupla years now, and must confess the driving force for maintaining it has gradually changed… initially I knew as much about blogging as I did about Mexican knitting patterns or Persian Hieroglyphics… in pursuit of extending readership reach, the Blog was an addendum to the other SOSYAL NETWURKIN channels I dabble with… Twitter, Facebook, Goodreads, and LinkedIn… I laptop-tapped maybe twice a week, with no rhythm or purpose, no base, no direction… then a few things started to click, mentally, not just on the Mac… the content, which the cognoscenti will tell yeez is paramount, began to take shape… a regularity of style evolved… the crime thrillers lived in the novels, and that can be pretty heavy-duty violent stuff… and any quill-scraper knows it’s vital to have your ‘Author’s Voice’ in the books… I found the Blog forming into an intrinsically different kind of writing… much like cartoons cater to short-term attention from readers, so also, most Blogs attract the same probable eyeball time… ideally for me, anything between 300 and 400 WURDS is plenty, but that’s not set in stone… the Blog becomes the ‘Author’s Brand’… a brand is by definition recognizable… mine attempts to be the tongue-in-cheek, humorous, reflective flow of consciousness of a comparative newbie… an independent, self-publishing plume-pusher… an old fogie from a separate career, stumbling through the maze that is the new-fangled reality called the Internet… and somehow coming out the other side, still bewildered, but surviving, hopefully successfully… populating the Blog occasionally are a couple of characters, Mabel, and Matron… Mabel is best described as an almost imaginary presence, somewhat akin to the invisible rabbit, Harvey, that the great actor James Stewart conversed with in the movie of the same name… that allows for ‘asides’ and commentary to flow… Matron is the character who keeps the writer in check occasionally by the administering of a huge syringe loaded with no-one quite knows what, and it’s impossible to tell whether or not she’s also a figment of the writer’s addled brain… the biggest change in the impact the Blog has on me is that it permits me to indulge another kind of writing from the novels, and doing it almost daily dictates a discipline I welcome… it now also connects automatically with all my other SOSYAL NETWURK linkages, hitting a possible 15,000+ readers for every Blog Post… and most importantly… IT’S FUN and I’m LUVVIN IT!… …Authors…why bother doing a Blog?… Follow Seumas on Twitter: @seumasgallacher Acclaimed author Amy Tan transcends the fraught contemporary Chinese-American relationship by delving into a story of betrayal, love, and courtesan houses in the heart of colonial Shanghai. Spanning three generations, The Valley of Amazement visits mother-daughter relationships across two continents and two very different cultures. Mostly told in the voice of Violet, an American girl who — tricked into becoming a virgin courtesan in a second-class establishment and separated from her American mother, Lulu— is put to the test when she discovers that all she had thought about herself was a lie. Evocatively written, Amy Tan’s The Valley of Amazement reintroduces tropes and themes which have previously launched her into fame— as was the case with her debut blockbuster novel The Joy Luck Club (1987). Firmly centered on Violet’s—and later, her daughter Flora’s—quest to understand her true identity in a world of seduction and trysts, Tan evocatively delves into the psyches of these three women by allowing herself to write in different point of views. Forced to become a “virgin courtesan” at fourteen, Violet learns how to use the game of seduction just as her mother used to effortlessly when she ran one of the most prestigious courtesan houses of Shanghai. With the help of Magic Gourd, a Chinese courtesan and old acquaintance of Violet’s, the latter is taught the intricacies of Chinese traditions and culture within the realm of seduction and courtesan houses. And although Violet masters this art, her young heart still longs for a love that is pure, often to be rudely awakened to the disappointment of her fate. With a storyline that dismantles the role of the mother as a nurturer and protector, relationships plagued with betrayal and double-standards, female friendships remain constant and are reproduced with each generation, echoing the permanence of family history as Violet is put in the same position as her mother was 14 years later. Amy Tan seldom gives her characters predictable “happy” endings in the sense that, much like her previous work, Tan provides the reader with a tangible storyline, in which the characters are thrust into filled a vicious cycle of tragedy. With the help of amazingly researched facts of 20th century China, the title of the novel gradually unfolds itself within the storyline as they represent meaning to these three important women. A melodrama that brings together cultures from opposing spheres, The Valley of Amazement is a novel that shows once again Tan’s inner conflict in her history, as a child born in America to Chinese immigrants. Staying close to the themes she so well writes about, Tan sheds a new light on the complexities and hardships on being a woman— and a courtesan—in up-and-coming China. by Amy Tan The Valley of Amazement February 2014 www. tempoplanet.com

Good quality portraits can be taken through the control of light in a studio or outdoors. • 12. 12 TEMPO TRIED & TESTED BUILD: Fresh minced meat biryani cooked with aromatic basmati rice. COMMENT: Noorjahan Biryani is one of Lazeez’ signature Biryanis and once you’ve tasted it you’ll know why. The biryani pot comes sealed in a roti, and with a slit of the bread, the incredible aroma is released! The dish comes with tiny meatballs that are a refreshing accompaniment not usual in biryanis. The masala was spot on and the rice cooked perfectly. Although the blend of rice with masala didn’t combine quite as smoothly as it should have, it was in no way a deal breaker. RECOMMENDATION: Lazeez has over 25 varieties of biryanis. Lazeez NOORJAHAN BIRYANI (Indian Cuisine) Biryani is thought to have originated in Persia and brought to South Asia by Persian merchants. It might be known in different names across the world – ‘kabsa’, ‘majboos’, ‘mandi’, but there’s no doubt that biryani is the king of dishes (and the dish of kings) across the Middle East and South Asia. No feast is complete without this sumptuous dish, whether it is eaten alone, or with pickles and curd. That’s why this month Tempo takes you on a biryani tour about town. By Diji Shujahi biryanifeast tudent biryanis ing mindik 3.5 4 4.5 BUILD: Rice cooked with biryani spices and succulent chicken pieces. COMMENT: This is Pakistani biryani at its best. The flavours are simple, and very well blended. Sometimes it is always the simpler fare that is the tastiest. Succulent chicken pieces are well cooked and marinated in the perfect amount of masala. This biryani delivers honest to goodness flavours that you won’t forget. RECOMMENDATION: Despite the very unusual name, this restaurant adds greatvalue to the city’s culinary diversity. CHICKEN BIRYANI (Pakistani Cuisine) BUILD: Basmati Rice cooked with mild spices and meat. COMMENT: One of the greatest accomplishments of a chef is meat that is cooked to absolute perfection, on an unforgettable bed of rice. This entire dish is by far the best in the category; the rice and meat melt in your mouth and the aroma, taste and feel of this dish will have you coming back for more. RECOMMENDATION: The quantities of their dishes are huge. One dish can easily satisfy three people. • 16. 16 MAITHA ABDULWAHAB AL KHAYAT COVER STORY “I'm quite a handful and it's hard to pin me down cuz I'm as busy as a humming bird. I didn't say ‘bee’ because bees sting, and I don't. People tell me that I'm lively, funny and have a charming sense of humour. I enjoy helping people, and I'm kind of like a cheerleader when I see anyone with a hobby. I would like to add that I'm very ambitious; I'm a bossy mum and a very proud Emirati, Arab and Muslim woman who loves, and promotes her culture. “ I got my creative side from my mum all along. She's very artistic and I definitely got that from her. But my interest in books started when I was eight studying in the UK, while my dad was working on his Phd at Exeter University. I was sent to the library to improve my English. (Hint: A library isn't a place you get bullied in - bullies hang out in the playground). The library was a sanctuary to me; a place where I was able to let my imagination run wild without restrictions, and where I immersed myself in the adventures of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and pretended I was Sleeping Beauty waiting for prince charming to save me with a kiss. “When I was a 15, I remember keeping a journal, in which I wrote many romantic stories and dreamed to be a romance fiction writer. But I forgot all about that when I went to college and started studying business. I forgot about my creative side for a time, but funny enough one of my business projects was to open up a book cafe. Who knows? I might do that one day. Fast forward to 15 years later, and now as a full time mother I have discovered that bookshops - especially the ones I like going to - didn't sell good quality Arabic picture books! My bookshelf at home was getting crowded with English picture books, whereas the Arabic corner had only a couple of them. It was kind of sad. Then one day, my sister who used to hate to find me with my nose stuck in a book (she liked to play with Barbie dolls), dared me to write a story. She asked me, “after all these years of reading and reading and reading, and nothing has come out of you till now!” That was a wake up call. I asked myself, “is there no one out there who will write decent Arabic picture books for our Emirati children?” Then I rolled up my sleeves and start cooking: I put on my business hat, wore my creative apron and waved my wand. Voila! SNAPSHOT Education: Higher Diploma in Business Administration (and currently studying towards a Bachelor's in Business Administration) Hobbies: Reading, drawing, writing, cooking, exercising Interests: Movies, travelling, knitting, book fairs, meeting people Family: Married with four children (one girl and three boys) Residence: Ras Al Khaimah Residence: Ras Al Khaimah Twitter: @MaithaAlkhayat I'm a bossy mum and a very proud Emirati, Arab and Muslim woman who loves, and promotes her culture. www. tempoplanet.com February 2014
  • 17. 17 “I'm very proud of my books, because each one of them just came out on its own. For example, "I Love My Dad's Long Beard" was inspired by how much my children just adored their daddy's long beard. As for "My Own Special Way," I was hoping that it would be my passport to becoming an international author. It won an award in Children's Forum in Al Riyadh in 2012, and was shortlisted for the Marsh Award 2013 best books in translation 2013. “My Own Special Way” focuses on the how a young girl can't seem to decide how to wear her hijab. Does she copy her four sisters? Or find her own way in the end? “I'm also happy with two more of my books that have been released this year "When A Camel Craves Logaimat," and the funniest and most daring of my books, “The Runaway Louse" which delighted children, but had parents cringing at seeing a louse as the protagonist of a children's book! “I was an Ambassador of the UAE Board on Books for Young People (UAEBBY) for a couple of years, but have now have been promoted to Board Member. My role, with the other members, is to promote positive change in children's literature, raise awareness and encourage love and respect for the reading, writing and illustrating of children's books. UAEBBY is a wonderful hub for children's picture book enthusiasts, offering them a wide range of workshops to improve their skills and knowledge, and to apply them almost immediately. “I would like to give more to my country by writing and promoting great books for our society and nations around the world. I would love to see my books translated in other languages. And I do hope that I will have managed to open up my book cafe one day, so that kids can come and enjoy book readings, while their parents lounge comfortably in the knowledge that their kids are learning while having a blast. “I say to aspiring authors don't be afraid of your ambitions, and don't let anyone tell you can’t do it. Believe in yourself, and yes, it really is better late than never. It took me 30 years to discover who I am and what I can do. I didn't have anyone then to encourage me. If you don't, I'm here. And I'm easy to find.” Emirati author Maitha Abdulwahab Al Khayat is on a mission. The 35-year-old Emirati author and illustrator is dedicating herself to promoting Arabic children’s fiction, inspiring young readers, and winning hearts. Meet Maitha… My role, with the other members, is to promote positive change in children's literature, raise awareness and encourage love and respect for the reading, writing and illustrating of children's books. • 18. 18 One feels good to be told “what beautiful skin you have” or “you look the same way you did ten years back’ or “you just don’t look your age” and so on. But that kind of achievement does not happen by waving a magic wand! Perhaps our grandmothers had the good fortune of leaving it to nature through a combination of organic food, an unadulterated atmosphere and a tension free environment. The 21th century is not the same, and since skin is the largest organ of the body, it is vital that we take care of it from head to toe. These are the five steps of a daily skin care regimen. 1. Cleansing A cleanser opens the pores on the skin and removes embedded grime and dirt whereas soap and water only removes surface dirt. There are different kinds of cleansers, creamy which is best for dry skin, and gel, which is great for normal or combination or oily skin. Wet the face and apply the cleanser all over face and neck in gentle circular upward strokes with the balls of your fingers. Wash off with tap water or cleanse with facial cotton/tissue. When wiping your face with a towel do not rub, just dab. rejuvenates and hydrates the skin - and this is best done while asleep. It should be applied after cleansing and toning. 5. Eye cream The eye area is sensitive, delicate and prone to allergies. There is no natural moisture under the skin in that area and hence the fines lines and crow’s feet appear faster. Cleansing the eye area should be done with a specific eye cleanser which is hypoallergenic and dermatologist tested. Cleansing the eye area should be done using outward to inward movements to prevent stretching of the skin. Eye make up should be removed however late you get home, and it’s especially important to remove mascara or eye shadow. A lost eyelash takes a year or more to grow back, or may never grow back, while pigmentation in the eye shadow could discolour your eyelids over a period of time. There are other steps for taking care of your skin, but for starters this is good. These basic skin care steps take around five to seven minutes every morning and every evening/ night. It is time you should dedicate to yourself however busy you are. 2. Toning The pores that have been opened by the cleanser need to be closed, and that’s what a tonic water or astringent (for oily troubled skin) does. Take some toner on a facial tissue or cotton and gently dab all over face avoiding the eyes. The toner removes any traces of the cleanser and tightens the skin by closing the pores. With advanced technology toners may not be available as part of a regimen, and that could be because the effects of a toner are incorporated into the cleanser itself. However if you do get one as part of the package do include it. 3. Day Moisturiser Moisturisers seal the moisture that’s below the skin, making it plump and firm. It also nourishes the skin with the various ingredients that are in day creams, like Vitamin E, liposomes, anti- ageing, sun protection factors (SPF, minimum recommended 25 to 30 factor) and anti- bodies that help fight damage from environmental elements. After cleaning and toning, dot your face and neck with the moisturizer, and massage gently in upward outwardstrokes with the balls of your fingers. Never neglect your neck as that’s where the age first shows! 4. Night Moisturiser Many of us skip this step. A night cream is richer in consistency; it revitalizes, YOU TOO CAN HAVE BEAUTIFUL SKIN dhabi dames By Premi Oommen With the holidays behind us, its time for many of us to leave our families behind. This poem is dedicated to mom. Throughout our childhood, my mom was always there for us. It was her job (or so we thought) to bake and sew, to care and fuss. She'd host our parties, watch our sport, Help with homework or build a fort. My mom is in my first sweet sip of tea each morning, And the shuffle of slippers down the passage as the sun comes up. She's the rich, chocolate colour in a mohair rug, The sure comfort of my hot water bottle. She’s the crackle of gift-wrapping on Christmas morning, And the twinkle of lights in the tree. I can hear her voice humming as I carve the turkey. She’s the wafting aroma of perfume She's the lipstick smudge kiss on my cheek, The swish of her evening gown slipping out the door. She’s the sound of applause as I walk on stage, And the face in the crowd I instinctively seek. She laughs alongside me and is in each tear that I shed. She was my first love, my very first friend Her voice reminds me to apply sun block, Wear a smile, walk up straight. My mom is the place that I came from, the home I return to, The directions I follow on my journey through life. My mom is ALL of these things, and so much more... My mom will always be here Beside me. IN SO MANY WAYS by Angelique Goldsworthy www. tempoplanet.com February 2014
  • 19. 19 Many years ago, Aisha lived with her parents and brothers in humble tents in soft yellow sand. Aisha spent every day cooking and sewing. One day, Aisha went for a walk to get some fresh air and wandered away in a daydream. When she realized that she was very far from home, she didn't know whether to turn right or left. “My parents will miss me and will look for me,” she thought. She saw a camel eating from a ghaff tree. Aisha thought, “If nobody comes, I can eat from this tree.” As night fell, Aisha became scared and hungry, so she approached the ghaff tree. Aisha forgot to say, “Bism Allah” before putting her hand on the tree. Suddenly, she fainted. The next morning, she woke up in a different AISHA AND THE GHAFF TREE Written by: Fatima Mohammed Al Mehri Illustration by: Aysha Saif Al Hamrani place and saw a handsome man sleeping. She called to him, “Who are you?” The man’s name was Sultan. Blushing, she said, “I lost my way. Where did you find me?” Sultan replied, “I found you near the ghaff tree. What happened?” Aisha told him everything. Suddenly, she started shouting like a man, saying words that could not be understood. Sultan ran to his parents. When his mother arrived, she read passages from the Holy Quran. Aisha calmed down and fell asleep. His parents called the Imam, who put his hand on Aisha’s head as he read the Holy Quran. When Aisha shouted incomprehensibly, the Imam said, “One of the ghaff tree jinnis went inside Aisha's body. You need to bring the Imam from the next village. He knows how to get it out.” Immediately, Sultan and his father set off on camels. After two weeks, Sultan finally brought the Imam who removed the jinni. Aisha was then returned to her family. When Sultan met Aisha's father, he told him what had happened, and asked him if he could marry her. The father said, “If Aisha approves, it is OK with me.” When Aisha accepted, it made Sultan the happiest man in the world. Eventually they married and Aisha knew that she had learnt the real meaning of happiness. ZAYED UNIVERSITY’S AL KHARAREF STORYTELLING CLUB was created to enrich the legacy of the Emirati storytelling tradition and contribute to the revival of this important cultural heritage within the United Arab Emirates. Last year, the Club in partnership with the Abu Dhabi Music and Arts Foundation exhibited Story Mile a collection of 48 original fables and folktales, written by students from the Academic Bridge Program, illustrated by College of Arts and Creative Enterprises majors and translated by ZOWD volunteers into the language of its characters, Emirati dialect. The tales, which are soon to be published in a book, share not only the storytelling traditions of the Emirates, but have also introduced other key aspects of Emirati culture. These latest stories are creating new footprints in Emirati's storytelling foklore, while preserving and reintegrating 24 archetypical traditional characters researched by Master Storyteller Abdul Aziz Al Mussallam and designated by the Department of Culture, Heritage and Information as genuinely Emirati back into the cultural landscape. And so, there he was, perspiration caressing his back and a migraine slowly developing into a red giant in the interior of his skull. There was still no sign of the carnival. ‘MOM!!’ he yelled for what seemed like the thousandth time. ‘Yes, Dave, I think we’re almost there… Shouldn’t be more than five minutes now…’ ‘Ugh. That’s what you said five minutes AGO, mom.’ Adults. He never understood them. He always thought that if hypocrisy should be considered a crime, the adults of the world had to be the first ones to be prosecuted. But then again, he would be one among them in not more than a few years. Dave wished his thoughts could at least wander off to some unknown abyss while his mother made a failing attempt to guide them to the city’s annual carnival. But the dead dry heat of the Canadian summer was taking its toll. Bred in the Middle East, one would have thought that summer in the subtropics would be a cakewalk for Dave… but the lack of humidity and the sudden temperature rise was burning a hole in his head. ‘Damn you, Kristal,’ he silently cursed his five year old sister for engineering the plan. He began kneading his temples as they started throbbing again. After a good 15 miles, the carnival seemed much more inviting than before. Dave managed to lose his family in the first ten minutes of his entry and wandered off into the crowd. He wasn’t a sucker for these kinds of things. He was the regular football playing, FIFA crazy, GTA-V on a normal day kind of guy. Carnivals with clowns, trapeeze performers and tattoo artists weren’t his jam. As he ventured further into the jungle of lights, cotton candy and bizarre stalls, he was suddenly startled by a tap on his shoulder. He whipped around, expecting to see Kristal gobbling on a stick of cotton candy and teasing him, but saw a signboard blinking neon out of the blue. Intrigued, he hopped in the direction of the sign, with a clear head for the first time in hours, but with his heart in his mouth. ‘David Leon Archer. Well well, as heavy the name, so mighty the boy…’ she rasped in a grating voice. Tarot cards lined the tables, charts of astronomical and other origins plastered the walls, bones, feathers and tails served as streamers. A chill ran down Dave’s spine. This wasn’t good. This wasn’t good at all. ‘W…wait… How do you know my name?’ Dave whimpered. ‘The touch and the scent leave a merry mark in the eh…eh…aaiirrrr,’ she sang whilst dancing before seating herself in front of a crystal ball. ‘Are you a… um… a witch?’ he asked, immediately biting his tongue for being so stupid. What if she turned him into a frog? She suddenly tipped her head backwards and curled her lips into a ghastly shadow of a smile. ‘And this ball shows me Where you’re soon to be Amidst the crowd and making merry When distracted, you’ll be very The hint of gold attracts you Alas, you be the fool! She sets dark death to consume you whole The lass with the golden smile has fulfilled her goal…’ Her laughter ricocheted off the walls like a bat’s call. Her black cloak fluttered. Dave was at a loss for thoughts. His mind ordered him to run, but his body dragged him towards the crystal ball. She raised her hands as if to welcome him. Then suddenly he overcame his paralysis and fought her off him; scratching, pulling her dark cloak… ‘Dave…Dave!... DAVE!!!’ That was the first thing he heard along with the smarting of a fresh slap across his cheek. He slowly opened his eyes to see his mother leaning over him, with her black dress torn at the collar. ‘Mom? Mom are you okay? Am I ..’ ‘Dave! Dave, honey, are you alright? Oh Lord. You must have passed out because of the heat. I’m so sorry it’s my fault… I shouldn’t have made you stay out in the sun…’ ‘Passed out? So the lady… the golden tooth… the darkness…?’ ‘DARKNESS? Have you been watching too much Harry Potter lately, Davie?’ chimed Kristal, clearly amused and smug for being able to take the heat better than her older brother. ‘Shush, Kristal. Don’t trouble your brother now. Poor kid,’ chided her mother. ‘Mom, let’s just get to the carnival and be done with it, please?’ said Dave curtly, a little stung by the dream. Or what was it? A hallucination? They finally reached the carnival, but this time it was for real. An uneasy feeling built up inside Dave… and then he spotted her. That face, the woman in the cloak – only now she was dressed as a gypsy. She saw him looking at her and grinned. Her golden tooth glistened in the afternoon sun. • 20. 20 white cube • What is White Cube ? White Cube is a community focused music studio in Abu Dhabi where musicians can rehearse and record their music. The studio was started by long-time Abu Dhabi resident musicians looking to revitalize underground music and arts in the city. White Cube also specializes in photography and video, providing all the tools artists need to present themselves to the world. • Why the name ‘White Cube’? White Cube’s original studio was constructed with German designed polystyrene foam (styrofoam) sound proofing. The room was covered from floor to ceiling in small, white, cube-shaped protrusions, which gave the feeling of being inside a large “cave-like” styrofoam cube. We established that being inside the studio was like being inside the “White Cube”. • Any obstacles faced on the way up? There were barely any obstacles between us as friends. We've grown up together and consider ourselves brothers. Our teamwork has been the business’ greatest strength. The biggest challenge has definitely been registering the company. We encountered a series of unexpected hurdles when trying to set up the business in Abu Dhabi, partly driven by the fact that the official “recording studio” business activity had never been registered before under the national media council. • What is the long term plan for White Cube? Our long-term plan is not specifically for White Cube but rather the local music scene. We have a future vision of a city where underground, local music is widely heard and followed, and we hope White Cube can be a leader in that movement. As for branching out – we’d like to be everywhere where there’s underground music, so we have a lot of ground to cover! • You three are also musicians. Do you every perform together? In short, Yes. We continue to perform, however we’re doing it with a twist. We’ve put aside the idea of releasing an album and going on tour. Now we focus our performances on drawing attention to local artists and, of course, having fun! We learn and perform cover songs written by local bands and collaborate with local artists themselves. Checkout some “White Cube Shoutouts” on our YouTube channel. • What makes White Cube stand out? We engage our community. Whether fans or musicians, we ask them to be a part of White Cube. We give them a platform to express their thoughts and share their art. • What could you guys your past selves of 10 years ago? If we could tell ourselves something ten years ago, it would be to keep doing exactly what we were doing, because every skill we have learned separately all came together to create a single entity, White Cube. • What would you tell your future selves? While we hope never to forget, we would remind ourselves 10 years from now that White Cube was built on passion and community, and to always maintain those fundamental values. Sara BukairWe see TEMPO as allies of local “underground” talent and culture. TEMPO magazine is the place to read about people and events in the city: things that are locally backed and often under-commercialized, and that are definitely deserving of the spotlight! She is a stencil aerosol artist, who gained her inspiration from her late Scottish grandmother who always wore bows. Coincidentally, Steffi was born in Bow, East London! Steffi used her infatuation with bows to create an image that represents her identity and uses her art to remember her grandmother. What started with painting simple bow tags developed into creating far more complicated life sized stencils. She explained to Tempo that she started off as a stencil artist and is now concentrating on spray painting the bow freehand. Hence all the pictures of bow in various forms! • 22. 22 Tempo writer and award-winning poet, Paul D, sat down with university student, director and videographer, Karina Kiseleva, to discuss her creative efforts in the UAE. PAUL D: Where are you from originally, and how did you get to the UAE? KARINA: I'm half Russian and half Tatar; born and raised until I was five years old in Kazan. I came to the UAE with my mother, who had just finished law school. She wanted the family together so instead of working back home, she decided we should move to the UAE. My father had a job opportunity and was working in Dubai, so we set to make our lives here as a family. PAUL D: That's a future geography lesson for me because I have never heard of those places. How did you get into film? Who are your major inspirations? KARINA: I wrote a lot, saw a lot, and heard a lot. I didn't speak much though, except when it was necessary. I wanted to portray in some way the things I had seen because I saw beautiful similarities between people and saw common ground in what we share. Sometimes we watch a movie and watch someone’s reality and we see the similarities, and that’s when we experience a sudden shift of perspective. I wanted to learn how to visually portray all that I had. My major inspirations, strangely enough were always revolutionary - and by that I don't necessarily mean political, I mean by your every day people who keep life going. I think my parents are my major inspirations. They showed me that nothing is impossible; they're living proof to me. PAUL D: You're currently studying film in university. What comes after that? KARINA: I want to open up a production house. I never want to stop making films. PAUL D: Your favourite movies and actors of all time? KARINA: American History X by Tony Scott, La Vita E Belle by Roberto Benigni, The Thief by Pavel Chukhray, and Cinema Paradiso by Giuseppe Tornatore. It's really hard to pick a few, but those come to mind right now. In terms of actors, Angelina Jolie would be the one; I always had this strange connection to the roles she chose. What are yours? PAUL D: I have really been in to international movies lately. I like The Diving Bell and Butterfly, a French film, and a Norwegian film called Headhunters. In the past year, you have made music videos, a documentary, and a movie. What is your favorite medium? KARINA: Movies. In all honesty, when you're still studying, you're always exploring - it's naive of me to say this, but that is why I joined film school, mainly to learn how to make films. Music videos and documentaries have been my preparation towards making a picture, and I've been preparing and writing for so long. Before I leave, I'll definitely shoot my first short film as director. PAUL D: You have done great videography at the Rooftop Rhythms show. What are your thoughts about the show? KARINA: It's a beautiful place to be because everybody is there to share a story that you know is personal to them, and the audience is there to relate. I love it because it gives that sense of belonging and unity. PAUL D: Have you ever done work in front of the camera? KARINA: Yes, I have, and, for a while, I had thought I liked being in front of the camera only because through acting I could express things I’d kept in. I would release through my characters. The beauty in acting is that you get to cheat life; you get to live more lives through your characters and it builds an understanding. I found much more comfort in being behind the camera because I get a much broader perspective on all that is happening. I'm more aware. PAUL D: What is your favourite genre of movie? KARINA: Drama. Yours? PAUL D: Suspense. What are your long term goals? Will you go back to Russia or stay here in the Middle East? KARINA: I would love to go back home eventually, but right now I’m looking at building my foundation and creating my stability here in the UAE. This place is full of possibility. PAUL D: It sure is. So, I was wondering about the possibility of you paying the coffee bill. BOTH ENDS OF THE LENS articulate cafe By Mugdha Sunil Polimera I was going to start writing something about some random thing that crossed my mind, but then a conversation with a friend just turned my thoughts to a diametrically opposite direction. When I think of the mental state that my generation is in, I feel a bit of panic… something I can’t put a name to it, but it isn’t a wholesome feeling. While most of us are worried about how many levels of Candy Crush we’ve finished and how to unlock the next level, there are news all over the internet of a cruel world where violence and poverty seems to be the norm. As we cry over our parents not letting us indulge in a dress that we would never wear more than a couple times, there are videos of children wailing in pain. It makes me wonder where our priorities lie. I know I may be too young to give my opinions on the problems of the world, but what good is the future if we don’t care about our world? The basic point of my rant is – shouldn’t we care that the world is falling to pieces?... That there are people living around us whose families are unstable in their own homeland; that there are madmen in this world who kill and cause chaos; that the world is slowly becoming a dump for some people (read most of us, kids) who don’t really care about anything more than their wallets or Foursquare ranking, and those people who care so much about the wrong things, that they’re willing to lose their humanity over it. I remember asking my dad as a kid when he was watching the news, ‘Papa, what are they fighting for?’ ‘Good question,’ my father replied. And to this day, I haven’t had that question answered. When people say education is needed to eradicate poverty, violence and all our world’s grave social issues, how far are they right? Do the episodes in History that show bloodshed and ruin, stop any war from being started? It isn’t just “education” that’s missing in this world – it’s humanity. All I’m trying to say is go out of your comfort zone, stop tweeting about your neighbor’s dog pooping in your garden, and actually do something that might make a difference. Donate to charitable causes, talk to people about things that matter and most importantly, educate yourself and those around you on how to be a better human being. Let’s be the better generation that strives to make a more humane tomorrow. If you don’t start caring now - then when? A BETTER TOMORROW www. tempoplanet.com February 2014

Winning its fair share of game of the year accolades, it kind of defies categorization because it does so many things: it engages you, creeps you out, keeps you guessing then makes you think...for a long time after playing. THE STORY: You play a college aged girl who returns home after a year away. Your family's new place is an old house, left by a deceased grand uncle who was thought to be crazy, and yes, the house is rumoured to be haunted. But no one's home and you're left to unravel the mystery of the empty house and what's happened in it over the past year. While the main story revolves around your younger sister, you are also sifting through your parent's lives and your dead grand uncle's past. THE GAME: A first person mouse and keyboard player, I got used to the movements quickly enough (I don't play PC games very regularly). The game progresses through the slow unfurling of the mystery which you uncover clue by clue - primarily through your sister's documented diary/notes/thoughts but also through official letters, postcards, newspaper clippings, school letters and cassette tapes (yes for those of you who don't know what cassettes are - it's set in 1995 - look it up) and other odds and ends of real life. And that's the power of the game. It feels like real life and a well acted voiceover rounds it out. The creepy element is constant. It never goes away. Everywhere you go, the unknown follows you and the unknown is really where true fear lies. The house is relatively huge and unrelentingly lonely. That it's raining and thundering doesn't help. As you near the answer to the mystery, some gamers will be pleased, others might be downright shocked and still others torn in several directions. But you never really know what happens until the very end. The games also forces you to pay attention, because little scraps of paper can make a big difference, and looking around can mean the difference between answers or being left in the dark. Oh, and there are some dark moments. Play it and you'll see what I mean. SPOILER ALERT: Bottom line, you won't want to stop playing it ‘til your done. While the subject matter that ultimately surfaces may be controversial for some gamers, it's still an amazingly designed and written story that hits at the heart of human nature and our deepest hopes and fears. It costs about US$ 20 and is available through Steam or via direct download from the game's website. You can finish it in a couple hours and it'll be worth it. You can get it for PC, Mac or iOS. technology WATCH THE VIDEO LG G FLEX CURVACEOUS VIEW How many of you are bored of flat screen smartphones? • 27. 27 During one week last month in Miami, I participated in two events that were quite different but actually similar in showing how Americans do business. The first was a VIP luncheon at the Rusty Pelican, a beautiful restaurant on Biscayne Bay with views of the sea, cruise ships, and nearby islands in every direction. The Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce hosted 34 ambassadors who participated in the US State Department’s Experience America program. The idea is to give the ambassadors a taste of life outside of Washington D.C. which like capitals everywhere is focused only on government. So 34 ambassadors – 13 from Europe led by the German ambassador who spoke on behalf of the group; 7 from Africa; 6 from East Asia; 5 from South America; 2 from Central Asia; and 1 from the Middle East – were assigned to tables among 200 business people from Miami and other parts of Florida who paid US$ 65-75 to attend. After eight years in the UAE, I had hoped to meet some representatives from the region, but there was no one from North Africa, India, Pakistan, or Iran, and there was only Oman from the Gulf. Perhaps it was related to the weather. It was 25C that day and gloriously sunny, quite different than in Washington. I suspect warm weather in the winter is more important to Europeans from cold countries. I sat between the Ambassador of the Togolese Republic and the Ambassador of the Republic of Singapore. They were interested in the business climate in Miami, but came at it from different standpoints with their countries at different economic stages. Later I found the Ambassador of Bosnia and Herzegovina – one of seven women among the 34 ambassadors - and chatted with her in Bosnian, something I get few chances to do these days. She’s from Sarajevo where relatives from my father’s side of the family live. Three days later I was at the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO) table at the Small Business Expo in Miami Beach. Unlike the executives from large companies who attended lunch with the ambassadors, here were many individual entrepreneurs who paid nothing. The ones with larger companies did pay for their own booth to exhibit their products and programs. The organizers collect money from them, but they also have to provide people to come to the booths, which is why entrance is free. At least 4000 people showed up between 10 am and 5 pm, the vast majority already running their own companies and the rest thinking about starting a business. The Miami Chapter of NAWBO was there to collect members and business cards. NAWBO colleague Heather Waldron and I gathered something like 150 cards from people interested in the organization and found one woman who filled out the membership application form. From now on they will receive weekly email blasts announcing NAWBO events. Some may join eventually, and others will attend events occasionally, all welcome as we grow the Miami Chapter. As a nonprofit, NAWBO was relegated to the Business Success Pavilion along with similar groups. We were given a table, two chairs, and a half-page ad in the show catalogue for free by the organizers. Experience has shown them that nonprofits attract entrepreneurs, and it makes sense to have some at a small business event. We weren’t there to talk about our own companies, but the reality is that once you engage in a conversation with someone, you exchange business cards, and ours are for Alcat Communications International for me and Keyes Company for Heather. In Miami, in America, it’s all business all the time. How much you spend to do business is up to you. ABOUT THERESA WEBER: Theresa Weber is Co-Founder of Alexandria Consulting Team (ACT) LLC an international management consultancy. Terry is also editor of the daily e-newsletter: MENA #WomeninBusiness Forum You can follow her on twitter @ TheresaFWeber and @ACT_LLC Conducting interviews of potential employees is both an art and a skill. Many interviewers make decisions based on instinct rather than logic, leading to wrong hires and high turnover rates, thereby costing organizations valuable time and money, as they have to start the recruiting process over again. Here are some common mistakes interviewers make, that you should avoid: Relying on first impressions and biases: Studies have found that the majority of interviewers make a hiring decision within the first 15 seconds of meeting someone. However, these first impressions are about as reliable as flipping a coin. In addition, we all have biases that lead us in the wrong direction. A bias is the instant bond you feel when you find out someone is from your same university or is a woman with similar experiences, even though you have never met before. Biases can cause you to hire who you “like best” instead of the person “who is best” for the job. Mistaking nervousness for a lack of ability: Lets face it we have all been there. Sometimes we just don’t interview well and are nervous. An anxious applicant does not mean the person can't do the job, just like excellent communication skills do not signal expertise needed for the job. And if the people you interview often seem uncomfortable, take a step back and consider your approach. Perhaps you are the problem. Not asking the right questions: Lazy interviewers ask well known questions such as "Tell me about yourself," and "Where do you see yourself in five years?" Most job candidates have rehearsed answers to these familiar questions. A better way to start is with more specific questions such as: "Tell me about three things you learned from your last job." The best questions are almost always follow-up questions. Listen to initial answers. Then ask why. Or when. Or how. This way you will learn both positive and negative aspects. Talking too much and taking over the interview: Many interviewers don't seem to remember that they can't learn about the candidate while they are talking. Interviews often turn into monologues and 20 minutes later your hiring decision is based on whether the candidate was a good listener. Instead, briefly describe the opening and company and then let the candidate speak – for 80% of the time, at least. Focusing on experience and education: Business school studies have determined that the combination of information, intelligence and skill account for only 10% of business success. Attitude alone accounts for 90%. Too few interviewers ask attitude questions like: "In a normal workday, what have you done for an employer that is more than what was expected?" Or ask behavioral questions like: "Tell me about the last time a customer or co-worker got mad at you." The purpose is to evaluate the person’s interpersonal skills and ability to deal with conflict. Or if you want to find out about problem solving skills ask: "Tell me about the toughest decision you had to make in the last six months." Exaggerating opportunities with the organization: Interviewers often try to oversell the candidate on the job, describing things that might happen in the future such as potential projects or opportunities for advancement. The problem is the candidate translates "might" into "will," and you have created expectations you may not be able to meet. So instead of describing possibilities, describe current projects and general career paths. Follow the simple rule: If you can't promise something, then don't bring it up. Turning an average candidate into a great one: It is easy to tick off items during an interview: education, good; experience, fine; attitude, okay… and before you realize it a person with no negatives seems like a great candidate. An absence of negatives is not a superlative. Always look for excellence. If good enough is all you find, keep looking. INTERVIEWER MISTAKES TO AVOID GETTING BACK INTO BUSINESS Theresa F. • 28. 28 Year 2014 HOROSCOPE ARIES Behave calmly and in a diplomat way, judge things objectively, don't rush and don't risk! Take care of yourself! You're recommended to avoid excesses, to get enough rest and to apply various procedures to escape stress. TAURUS February 2014 will be a good period to have a check of the general condition or to resume certain medical initiatives under the guidance of specialists. Do a course or some self study! GEMINI You cannot afford carelessness and it's not the right time to take risks. On the contrary, it'll be a period in which you'd better find your balance and strengthen yourself. It's recommended that you exercise. Think twice about each decision you make! CANCER You might just be splitting hairs. You'll need to relax. It would be helpful to you to talk to somebody about what has got you worried. Read a psychology book or a good detective novel LEO February 2014 doesn't seem to pose problems to Leo people; on the contrary, it can bring some solutions to where needed. Express yourself clearly, but in a diplomat way, and listen patiently! VIRGO You'll need patience, because you might have to deal with delays or troubles related to communication. Some things will not come out right the first time and will need to be resumed. Don't give up and you'll succeed! One month into the new year; it’s already going by very quickly. Has 2014 been good so far? Is it following the plans that you set out? Are the changes you determined to make this year happening? As you know, a change is only becomes real when you take action on that change. “A change that makes a positive impact” is a pretty good definition of innovation. Innovation is all about change for the better. So with the link to innovation made, how can you increase the chances of having a “most innovative year?” Here’s some ways that can help you and your organisation be brilliantly innovative. 1. Have More Pride Every organisation exists to serve customers or clients, whether they pay for it or not. And we know things could be done better, but it is just too hard to change. Well is it? Nobody is saying it is easy, but surely you could bring some improvement somewhere? It is a sure sign of a lack of care if you don’t try to make things better. When you care about how you are perceived, you begin to act differently; you care. If you can’t take pride in what you do, then you have a great opportunity to find something where you can do something that “will make you feel proud.” (Thanks Heather Small!) 2. Set Challenging Challenges So things are pretty good, customers are happy, bosses are happy – great stuff. However, you know it is not perfect, and you want it to improve without making people feel battered. Set a challenge to your team. Urge them to be the best, or if they are the best, to be the best ever! I heard about a senior IT exec who set a challenge to his region to cut the time it took to do tasks by 50% (and they were pretty lean already). His people rose to the challenge and managed to reduce the time tasks took, and overall, they saved 20% of time. They didn’t hit the challenge target, but by aiming high, the department was able to realise some serious benefit that was thought to be out of reach. Oh, and it was seriously celebrated! 3. Share the Tough Targets A new year means new objectives. And as hard as you negotiated, you still ended up with that target that is nigh on impossible to achieve with current resources and budget. Do you ignore it and hope everyone forgets about it? My suggestion is to share the impossible objective and seek creative solutions from those doing the role. They will have the answer, your job is to listen to them, find it and then make it happen. Crowdsourcing works when people understand the challenge, know that it matters and believe they can make the difference. 4. Be the Change-Maker Too often, we can focus too much on the current. We ignore the future, hoping that someone else has that one covered. And then guess what, we never saw the change coming until it was too late. So this coming year, determine to be the “change-maker”. Instead of it being done unto you, you make the change happen. Even if you can’t do this, at least look up and see what’s coming. Set some time aside each week to find out what’s happening out there. 5. “Make It So” Finally, instead of just thinking or talking about doing something different next year, turn it into action. As Jean-Luc Picard of the USS Enterprise would say, “make it so.” unleash moxie with brandmoxie 2014: YOUR MOST INNOVATIVE YEAR? by Harvey Wade image credit: adespresso.com INNOVATION EXCELLENCE HOW TO ENCOURAGE YOUNG MINDS? • 29. 29 Dr. DMS A doc from the Bronx DOC IN THE HOUSE Emma Kirkman Conservation and Sustainability THE PLANETARIANS Is there a difference between a doctor and a pharmacist? In my mind the difference is huge, but I sense a lot of confusion out there. Who do you see when you’re ill? A physician, right? So why is it that so many people go directly to a pharmacist? Pharmacists are an important member of the medical family, but their job is NOT to diagnose illness, but rather to dispense and explain how to take meds. They shouldn’t be prescribing medications without consulting a physician. It’s so common to meet folks who have gone to a pharmacist first for a “cold”, and they get “augmenteeeen” (so as not to use exact brand names, let’s define this as amoxicillin/clavulanic acid). Then, they can’t comprehend why it’s not improving. It’s a COLD!!! Antibiotics don’t help. They can actually make you worse. Go check it out online. While you’re there, look up how you get Clostridium difficile colitis. The public seems to think that it’s fine to walk into a pharmacy and leave with a bag of meds. Like its “shopping”. If you show up with a cold, all you need is relief -paracetamol. However what I tend to see, is a huge goodie bag full of various pharmaceutical delights. Bags of meds are fun, right? People, you need to realize that medications have side effects and can interact in wicked and wonderful ways. A wise man once said, “all meds are poisons, it just depends on the dose”. If you’re ill, go see a doctor. That’s their job. If they think you need meds, go ahead. If the meds are prescribed incorrectly or if there is some problem with the prescription, the pharmacist will pick up on this. This is their area of expertise. An ancient Doctor’s oath, states to “do no harm”. Those in the health profession need to remember this. They should also understand their role and respect it. This is not about ego and who knows more, but about doing your job correctly and staying safe. At the end of the day, we’re all here to help. And, to “do no harm”. We've just seen the World Future Energy Summit in Abu Dhabi bring together some of the world’s largest companies and countries pioneering and using renewable energy and sustainable practices. WFES took place this year as part of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week with a number of other conferences and events happening alongside the summit, including the announcement of the Zayed Future Energy Prize. Whilst many deals and collaborations this year have been announced, with Masdar Institute developing 5 new iCenters led by the research projects the institute is currently leading, and a new technology agreement signed with BP to support innovation and entrepreneurship, the Zayed Future Energy Prize has also highlighted what has already been done to make strides to develop sustainable living. This year’s lifetime achievement award winner was Wang Chuanfu, who founded a battery manufacturing company that is now one of the world’s largest manufacturers of rechargeable batteries, and is the market leader in electric buses and large scale storage systems. He won along side ABB in the large corporation category and AbellonCleanEnergy in the SME Category. The Zayed Future Energy Prize does not just award companies who have already pioneered sustainable solutions, but also encourages schools to put together proposals to change thier school’s energy consumption. A prize is awarded to 5 schools in different areas of the world based on their proposal, and they can then use the money to fund their planned energy saving changes. One of the winners this year, The Tonga High School, is set to become the first school in the South Pacific to generate electricity completely by solar power. Other high schools around the world plan to develop a combination of wind and solar power, and also to power the school by solar to the extent that they can take their school off the power grid, and create fuel for cooking through biogas. It is amazing to see what these teenagers can achieve, being the driving force behind many of these projects. As they are the ones trying to safe guard their planet for their generation and future generations to come. With all of the development and agreements from the big energy players at WFES this year, I can only hope that those students who are changing their schools this year, will go on to change the planet for the better in years to come. • 30. 30 My name is Khaled Saeed Abdeen. I'm 43 years old and from Egypt. I am an Ophthalmology Surgeon by profession. I have lived and work in Abu Dhabi for the past nine years. I spend my spare time walking, jogging, cycling, playing tennis and following National Geographic documentaries and travel channels. I started photography three years ago when I started attending Mubadala World Tennis Championship in Abu Dhabi. It was then that I decided to buy my first DSLR Nikon - an entry- level crop sensor camera with couple of zoom lenses to shoot the tennis stars and tennis action. My photography knowledge comes from reading books watching multimedia materials and experimenting. I carry my camera everywhere. I like landscape, cityscape, street and some macro photography, and lately have got into black and white photography as well. I am inspired by the international famous photographers, Tom Ang and the famous Steve Macurry. I’ve learned that you shouldn’t over indulge in expensive tools. You can learn even on a mobile phone camera, and then upgrade slowly. Read. Join a photography community. There is no right or wrong, and though there are rules, some of them can be broken in the name of art. SNAP HAPPY STARTING PHOTOGRAPHY Khaled Saeed Abdeen www. tempoplanet.com February 2014
