ON “BEING A GREAT BOSS”
BY THERESA WEBER
All good points that we need to be
reminded of occasionally - Kathleen
Really good points. I think it’s
provocative to think about putting
employees first. If you’ve hired well, this
is bound to pay back in spades. I think
that the final point will likely be the
most challenging for many businesses as
reviews and decisions are so frequently
made based on what has come before
not on what might (likely) happen in
the future. - Katie
I love the article, great tips! However I
am not sure employees should come first
.I see it as parallel growth .Taking care of
the employees is one way of achieving
customer satisfaction. - Suha Tabari
Superb article – But it is not surprising
to read these tips from you, Ms. Weber,
given that you “walk the talk” in
every endeavor you undertake. Much
appreciate this superb refresher course!
- John Habib
Very good tips. Tip No. 1 (Put customer
“second”) gives me pause though; alas,
in this hyper competitive economy,
sometimes difficult clients need to be put
first, even if they might not deserve to
be. - John McGowan

If history has taught us anything, it is
that our existence is temporary and that
the beyond is frightening because…it’s
unknown. In this most recent adventure,
world known Professor Robert Langdon
is propelled in a chase against time in the
heart of Dante Alleghieri's Florence.
You might think that the hype on this
book is annoying, but it is justified.
Although The DaVinci Code remains
the best in this series, Inferno is as good
(but not better, of course). As history
has seen, many works of art have been
inspired by Dante's epic masterpiece
The Divine Comedy, and specifically the
first canto Inferno. Langdon's adventure
finds its birth in the lyrical verses of this
Italian poem.
When Langdon awakes in an unknown
hospital in Florence, Italy with no
recollection of how he got there and why,
and with a very dangerous object in his
possession, he finds himself in not only
a race for the truth, but also a race to
save humanity as we know it. With the
help of the beautiful and young doctor
Sienna Brooks, Langdon seeks to stop an
impending calamity that risks changing
everything.
Plagued by hazy visions and a temporary
amnesia, Langdon finds himself being
chased down for something he has no
knowledge of possessing and a quest he
has no knowledge of accepting.
It is of course important to remark that,
as a picky reader that judges her books
by their ending, I was a bit disappointed.
Instead of envisioning an ending that
would have left us all speechless, Dan
Brown, in my opinion, played it safe by
writing an ending with a predictable,
almost utopian resolution that made all
parties happy.
Fast paced and enthralling, Brown's new
novel featuring the famous art history
professor is a thrilling ride that, like his
other novels, succeeds in taking reality
to a fictional construct filled with twists
and turns all the while unraveling facts
and secrets of numerous art works and
organizations.

THE ART
OF MACRO
PHOTOGRAPHY
www. tempoplanet.com08
Macro Photography,
also known as close-up
photography, is used to capture
small size objects.
It can be broken down into three
categories, first is the simple
“close-up” in which the subject
is less than life-size, second is
“macro photography” in which the
subject size is vary from normal
life-size to 10X life size and lastly
there is “micro photography” of
images captured with microscopes
and that require a greater than
10X enlargement of the original
subject.
To accomplish the task of
macrophotography any DSLR
will work, but you will need a
specific macro lens since you will
be shooting very close to subject.
Since the light coming through
lens will be minimal a ring flash or
macro flash attachment is highly
recommended.

CITY BITES:
WHERE: KAWLOON
WHAT: Hot & Spicy Prawns Soup
BUILD: Hot and spicy clear soup with prawns, green
chillies, chilli flakes and ginger.
COMMENT: The soup delivered fully on its namesake
– very hot and very spicy – a little too hot for human
consumption. It didn’t register too high on the
‘comforting’ metre. The prawns were yummy and
redeemed the soup somewhat, but the soup tasted a tad
too corn-starchy. And yes, the strands of ginger, green
chillies and chilli flakes delivers a decent dose of zing.
RECOMMENDATION: You have a choice of clear or
creamy soups, both in vegetarian and non-veg options.
RATING: 4 STARS
WHERE: THAI EXPRESS
WHAT: Tom Yam Kai Soup
BUILD: Spicy Thai herbal soup with chicken.
Comment: If you’re looking for noodles in this soup, you
won’t find them. The soup had chunks of tomatoes and
lots of mushrooms, lemon grass, galangal and basil.
The herbs were well incorporated and had the traditional
Tom Yam flavor. However, the soup was a little too sour
for my taste buds; possibly due to the large amount of
tomatoes in it?
RECOMMENDATION: Thai express don’t offer the
variety of soups one usually expects in a restaurant of
this type. Adequate at best.
RATING: 3.5 STARS
WHERE: THE NOODLE HOUSE
WHAT: Baksu
BUILD: Beef broth with spiced meatballs, shredded
cabbage and egg noodles.
COMMENT: The soup was more like a beef broth. Very
clear soup with beef meatballs (those were yummy!) and
egg noodles. Except for the meatballs, the soup felt more
like a beef bouillon cube dissolved in hot water. An extra
dash of pepper and salt helped a lot but not enough to
make a real difference.
RECOMMENDATION: Going to The Noodle House for
soup isn’t worth it (because of the relatively high cost),
best use your cash for other dishes worth trying.
RATING: 3 STARS
By Diji Shujahi
Soup has always been a great go-to comfort food when we are down with flu. But soup is
so much more than that – it is a ‘health food’, a ‘diet food’ and a delicious snack! Come to
think of it soup is so versatile, healthy and easy to make, it deserves more of our respect!
And that’s precisely why we pay it homage here…
SPICY SOUPS!
SOUP (EVEN)
YOU CAN DO
STEP 1: Combine:
4 1/2 cups low-sodium chicken broth
1 cup each chopped onion, carrot, and celery
1 teaspoon each dried basil and oregano
1/4 teaspoon black pepper, and 1 bay leaf
STEP 2: Bring to a boil. Cover and simmer 5
minutes.
STEP 3: Add 1 1/2 cups dried egg noodles. Cover
and simmer 8 minutes; discard bay leaf.
STEP 4: Add 2 cups chopped cooked chicken breast.
STEP 5: Enjoy!
STEP 1: Heat the oil in a large saucepan over medium heat until shimmering, about 3
minutes.
STEP 2: Add the celery, carrot, and onion and cook, stirring occasionally, until the
vegetables have softened, about 10 minutes.
STEP 3: Stir in the garlic and cook until fragrant, about 1 minute. Season with several
generous pinches of salt and pepper.
STEP 4: Add the broth, tomatoes with their juices, lentils, bay leaf, and thyme and stir to
combine.
STEP 5: Cover and bring to a simmer, about 15 minutes. Once simmering, reduce the heat
to low and continue simmering, covered, until the lentils and vegetables are soft, about 15
minutes more.
STEP 6: Taste and season with more salt or pepper as needed, then stir in the vinegar.
Add the spinach and stir until wilted. If you prefer a creamier texture, purée half of the
soup in a blender and add it back to the pot.
STEP 7: Sahtain!

them. I believe it’s better to keep your
look simple and create your own fashion
statement.

“42: A Tribute to the Nation”,
a spectacular collection
of paintings honouring members
of the UAE’s ruling families. The
collection is being completed, in
time for the 42nd National Day
Celebration of the UAE, which
falls on the 2nd of December
2013, and will be showcased
during the month of December.
The painter of the entire collection
is Esmi Pangilinan, one of a small
remaining crop of true ‘manual’
art masters - in a world enamored
by digital art. He uses pen and ink,
watercolor, airbrush and pastels. He
agreed to share the paintings here,
for the first time ever - with Tempo’s
readers.
Esmi explained that he wanted to
create the 42 artworks to highlight
the inspiring legacy and vision of each
leader. He uses a style of painting
called “Spontaneous Realism” that
depicts assurance and stature of each
subject.
“With the ever evolving world of
technology, we should always go back
to what makes us human through the
reflection of art,” he says.
Esmi currently teaches portraiture and
sketching at the L’ atelier des Arts in
the capital.

“I spent most of my childhood
commuting back and forth grew
up between Byblos, Lebanon and
Abu Dhabi, UAE, and I enjoyed
it! I also spent some time in
Dearborn, Michigan and Boston,
Massachusetts. Travelling most
of my life gave me exposure to
different cultures. I went to a
French school and eventually
studied advertising at Notre
Dame University in Lebanon. I
also studied music theory and
undertook vocal training at the
conservatory in Kaslik, Lebanon.
MY EARLY INFLUENCES
“I have been singing since as far
back as I can remember and spent
most of my childhood listening
to tracks and noting the lyrics so
that I could then sing them. I met
a few musicians during a visit to
a friend’s place and after a good
jam session they invited me to join
their band that was performing in
a club in Beirut. I happily joined
and wound up jamming at different
clubs around town. It was a very
essential mode of expression for
me and I slowly became known as
the Tracy Chapman of Beirut. I was
later introduced to Ziad Rahbani
who led me into the world of jazz
and who was a strong influence in
the most educational phase of my
musical career.
I abandoned music for a few
years before I finally understood
that it was my calling and began
working on my first album. In the
technology that enabled me to
produce my album between LA
and Abu Dhabi. This would have
never been possible 20 years ago!
When it came to writing the actual
songs, I dug into my thoughts,
experiences and pain, and it was
almost like healing my wounds
in a way. I am very proud of this
album and am looking forward to
seeing people’s response to it; I’m
already getting a lot of positive
feedback from all over the world. It
is truly heartwarming to see your
thoughts go from melodies in your
mind, to tracks that are recorded
then released for the whole world
to enjoy! I love what I do and feel
blessed to be able to do it!”
process, I established some connections
with musicians in LA and eventually
got introduced to Joe Kennedy who
produced my album. I feel my path has
been guided all along… and that the best
is yet to come!
MY INSPIRATIONS
My mother is the first artist I ever met,
and her ability to pursue her art with
three children and an abundance of
responsibilities is my ultimate reference
about the endless possibilities in life. I
am also inspired by powerful women like
Nina Simone, a musician and outspoken
activist, who used her music to spread
light. I am deeply inspired by pain and
emotions…in fact my entire album is
based on that! But ultimately, it’s the
triumph over pain that matters most
to me and that is what I try to convey
through my songs.
MY CREATIVE PROCESS
I’ve been writing songs since I was a
teenager and enjoy the process very
much. My style of music evolved and it
is only in the last few years that I started
developing my own sound and genre. I
evolve with every song! Having recently
completed my first album, “Mama’s
Back”, I’m already thinking of ways I
can do it differently next time. The most
important element in songwriting is the
need to have live instruments present
in the music. I feel there is a lack of
organic instrumentation in the music
we hear today and I’m keen on making
sure my work includes a variety of
live instruments, be it in the studio or
through live performances.
JUGGLING RESPONSIBILITIES
I see my biggest achievement as my
ability to juggle my daytime work, with
my children, my family and my music -
in spite of the pitfalls and the challenges!
Life tends to get in the way; for many
years I let things get in the way of my
dreams but recently I decided that no
matter how hard it got, I have to pull
through and keep going. Making this
album has been such an amazing journey
for me and resembles my life in a way.
MY BIGGEST CHALLENGES
Well being an Arab singing in English
is not exactly the simplest way of
entering the music business! Whenever I
approached record labels in the past, they
emphasized the need to sing my mother
tongue yet they couldn’t realize that
English is the language I speak 95 percent
of the time! Having said this, I did write
one song in Arabic, called ‘Marrat” and
though it sounds like a new genre of
Arabic soul, I plan to turn my challenges
into advantages. I would like to take my
music to people all over the world and
break barriers and borders with it!
MY FIRST ALBUM
Producing this album has been the most
difficult thing I have ever had to do in my
life. It had added tremendous pressure on
me - emotionally, technically, logistically
and financially, but it was also incredibly
stimulating! This was my first album and
I produced it without a record label. This
meant that I was involved in every single
step. I started discovering music in a
different light; hearing every instrument
in a song and admiring the amazing

LIFE’S STAGED:
AS YOU LIKE IT
by Angelique Goldsworthy
When we first settled in the UAE, I
had the strange feeling that I’d stepped
onto the set of a new reality TV series.
The really scary part was that I was
both a central character and head of
publicity! This was no nine to nine
desk job; it was more like an ongoing
Broadway production - with no dress
rehearsal. A few years on, I’ve realized
that these crazy ideas weren’t that far
from reality.
The image of expat life portrayed
on social network pages has a touch
of glamour and adventure. Just
after summer vacation or a Yasalam
weekend, some of our profiles start to
resemble a scene from ‘Lifestyles of
the Rich and Famous’. Obviously we
all know we’re not celebrities, but it
could cause confusion for some late
night facebook users. We’re not trying
to fool anyone intentionally, but we do
still put on a good show. Facebook gives
us each a type of virtual stage; a blank
screen where we can release selected
scenes from real life to people in the
‘audience’, aka our ‘Friends’ list (and a
few unknowns if our security settings
permit). In turn, we gain admission to
their ‘theatre of life’. And so, although
we might be thousands of miles apart,
everyone lives happily ever after,
right? Well, eventually. Remember,
communicating online takes practice and,
like all relationships, “It’s complicated.”
Arriving in Abu Dhabi International
Airport five years ago, I still remember
the shock I felt the moment we stepped
outside and the intense summer heat
assaulted us. The exotic new foods
and aromas, the unfamiliar colours of
desert and ocean are experiences we
instinctively want to share with friends
and family we left behind. I can’t help
blushing when I remember my initial
excitement at finally being connected
online. Photos were uploaded, statuses
updated, with the frequency and zeal
of a CNN news anchor reporting live
from Time Square on New Years Eve…
“The temperature 48 degrees Celsius.
Unbearable!” I felt compelled to document
each amazing moment: A batch of
cookies burnt, my first trip to Marina
Mall, the joy of finding marmite at
Spinney’s…
Isn’t it funny how a single object seems
to change shape, when you look it
from another angle? Just imagine that
unassuming soul who logs onto Facebook
from a cold and rainy corner of the
globe. They scan their homepage for any
life-changing quotes or an old school
photograph they can tag. Scrolling
a little further they see our familiar
faces (yet again!) smiling widely from a
packed Yas Arena, as Paul McCartney
sings in the background. The friend
involuntarily grips the mouse tighter.
Below the photo, a line from the
chorus is posted in the comment
box: “Na…nananana…” Scrolling on
hurriedly the friend sees an album
uploaded with the title in capital
letters: ‘BEST TRIP EVA!” Mocktails on
the beach in Phuket… amaaaaazing! It
sounded familiar, like something from
the cover of People magazine.
With all the drama and excitement
of life, plus all the responsibilities of
chief publisher, it’s not surprising
that I took a couple of years to see
the disconcerting truth. I had been
looking through a string of glorious
vacation photos and posts by fellow
expats, when I had a minor epiphany.
As much fun as expat life was for
some of us, there were others who
might not share our enthusiasm. But
life in ‘the desert’ still held plenty
of thrills and this girl was not ready
to quit the show. Perhaps a smaller
stage, fewer spotlights, more authentic
characterization…Suddenly I thought
of a perfect status update. Unlocking
my smart phone, I typed, clicked
to ‘post’ and watched as the words
uploaded: “Wise Will Shakespeare
said, ‘All the world’s a stage…’
But he could have warned us that our
parts were unrehearsed!”
DIARY OF A
TRANSCONTINENTAL
EXPAT
by “Bateen Betty”
A DAY IN THE UK
Every morning is the same. First it’s
meditative time with my Creator as
I sit facing the brighter side of the
room, thanking God for His mercies.
They say that warm water followed
by green tea before breakfast is a good
practice. So I drink some. What’s on
my menu today, I wonder? Because
every day is not the same…
My summer months, back in the UK,
are mostly spent outdoor, pottering
around in my garden, weeding out,
watering, trimming and pruning
plants, or picking vegetables or fruit
for breakfast. There’s so much to do
that I forget the time. I then meet
up with my friends and ex-work
colleagues who want to catch up
with me. I love visiting my friends;
old and young. One old friend has a
typical farmhouse and grows fruit and
vegetables. I return with bags full of
vegetables and fruit, which I turn into a
delicious Thai squash soup followed by
Cambodian pumpkin custard for dessert.
My guests love the unusual flavours.
Sometimes I bake cakes to give away.
There’s joy in this kind of giving and
there’s always someone in need. Who’ll
say no to cake?
A DAY IN ABU DHABI
While driving on the super highway
of Abu Dhabi, I think of my fruit trees
in the garden and in the field, where
I go berry (blueberry, raspberry and
blackberry) and apple picking. Here I buy
berries in boxes at Spinney’s or Lulu’s
and they’re never the same.
Back home the squirrels have a field day
with our walnuts and horse chestnuts,
but here, I have to pay for them.
How different life is here! As I sit in
my pristine apartment, I think of my
other home where all year round a local
farmer’s herd of sheep graze the land and
trim the nettles and thistles that grow
over the field.
In the UK it’s about sweating out in the
garden, meeting friends socially over
tea and scones, and cleaning my home
by myself. In my dear adopted city of
Abu Dhabi, I busy myself working at
the local Thrift Shop, interacting with
people from different countries, and
selling donated goods which raise
money for community charities here
and abroad. I also occasionally assist
in a women’s shelter making crafts
with other volunteers to help a group
of doctors and nurses offer health
check-ups. You see, I once used to be
a nurse.
Once a week, I meet up with our
Ladies Fellowship where we gather
to help lift up each other’s spirit
through praise songs, prayers,
reading Psalms, watching videos
and Bible study. We are more than
friends; we are like sisters. Coming to
Abu Dhabi is yet the best thing that
ever happened to me, personally, in
terms of my spiritual faith in God,
which has grown deeper. And I got
to know many people from different
ethnic backgrounds, different
nationalities and different cultures
who worship God so passionately.
Occasionally on some days, I attend
a social network to catch up with
friends I met when I first arrived
here, and I also make new friends.
Sometimes I go on the fun trips
within the UAE, but weekends I
always spend with family /husband.
Life here in Abu Dhabi is as exciting
as in the UK. I am doubly fortunate
to have two lifestyles and two homes
in two different countries and
continents.
Thank you God!
THE DHABI DAMES
RUMINATIONS ON
HAPPINESS
By Marien Oomen
Ask any woman and she will say
that chocolate brings her happiness.
Ask any man, and he will say,
happiness is a rising bank balance.
Ask your child and happiness is
freedom from school. Is ignorance
really bliss? It is no coincidence
that the happiest people around
tend to be those untethered by
responsibility. They are usually the
young, and most often it is those lost
in a world of their own imagination.
Once I had some furniture delivered
to my home in India. In the state of
Kerala, I was informed, there are
union workers who made it their
prerogative to unload any truck
that passes the junction where
they sit drinking tea, and smoking
cigarettes the whole day. Ten hefty
men outside my home came forward
and asked for Rs 2000 to unload
my furniture. It was a ridiculously
high amount for a few pieces. Was
I happy? No. The truck people were
asked to step aside and the Union
stepped in. No one could argue with
them. So haggling was the only way
around things and we all agreed on
Rs 1000. Were they happy? Sure!
They got a huge amount of money
for doing almost nothing. The
unfairness of it all made my blood
boil and happiness almost went out
the window. But then I was given
another perspective. The Union’s
forceful way of unloading trucks
secured their bread and butter. You
just have to give in and be pleasant.
In the end it works for everyone.
Women all over have such an
enormous responsibility on their
shoulders to keep the home peaceful,
keep their men happy, and their
children in good standing. As
mothers, we teach our children to
treat every human soul with respect
and regard the human race with
dignity. If our children are abusive
to strangers, to animals, or disfigure
public places and properties, it really
reflects back on the parenting they
received from us. And invariably our
children always look up to us to be
an example to them. Recently two
men in their business suits abused a
cashier at a money exchange, and I
was furious at their crude behaviour.
I didn’t have the gumption to stand
up for the simple cashier. But now I
wish I had.
A few weeks ago I was pleasantly
surprised to see young men and
women from the UAE wearing “ I
love UAE’ tees and walking up and
down the Champs Elysees. I wanted
to greet them saying, “hey, I’m from
Abu Dhabi too”. I was tickled pink
to see them eating shawarma, and
suddenly I felt a connection.

began. And you Paul, did you originally
pursue an education degree?
PAUL D: I initially studied creative
writing and then switched over to
education in the middle of my second
year when I realized that creative
writing wouldn't pay the bills. Now back
to you, what are some of the projects
that you have worked on?
NASSMA: I worked on a number of
interactive projects when I was in
Canada, one of which was created for
one of the government sectors. I also
worked on a game called Hideout! with a
group of friends that was later released
on Xbox Live Marketplace. I also pitched
a show idea that I created specifically for
Cartoon Network Arabia that was later
developed as our first ever pilot.
PAUL D: Congratulations on that! So
what were your favorite cartoons as a
child?
NASSMA: Tom and Jerry, Road Runner,
Animaniacs, Batman, Superman, some
anime shows, Dexter's Lab, and the list
goes on! How about you, Paul, do you like
cartoons?
PAUL D: Goof Troop, Tailspin, Dark
Wing Duck, and Heathcliff. So what do
you look for when searching for voice
over artists for specific characters?
NASSMA: Voiceover artists should be
great actors and impressionists. It's not
easy expressing crazy cartoon characters
behind closed doors with nothing but a
few lines and maybe some early concept
art. You should be very flexible in
trying to portray the right personality
the director is looking for but most
importantly the artist should always
have a demo reel which would help
during the casting process, so no one's
time is wasted if the director decides he
or she is the right fit for the part.
PAUL D: What do you think the future
of animation will be like in the UAE?
NASSMA: I think it’s a very bright future
for animation and film in the region. It
always takes time and effort to build a
PAUL D: Nassma, where are you
from originally and how did you
make it to the UAE?
NASSMA: When I was at school,
they used to call me the UN
(United Nations) kid. I was born
in the UAE with Iraqi, Egyptian,
Turkish, Bahraini roots and I
developed a strong Canadian
accent. I've always thought of the
UAE as my home. Abu Dhabi holds
some of my greatest memories,
friends, and, most importantly,
family, so it only feels natural to
fly across the world and give back
to the UAE through the only way I
know how, filmmaking.
PAUL D: What’s your connection
to film making?
NASSMA: I'm currently part of the
production/development team at
Cartoon Network Studios Arabia.
It's a lot of fun and we get to be
crazy creatives for a living. There's
no better way to put it. A lot of
what I do involves serious work
though. Along with my team, I'm
responsible for developing and
producing original kids content
that stems from the region and
has a unique, fun, Middle Eastern
flavor that appeals to international
audiences. I also manage
production schedules, work on
budgets, and whenever I can I
get involved in the development
writing process.
PAUL D: What made you decide
to pursue this career? Did you
receive a degree in animation?
NASSMA: The story of how I
got into animation is pure luck. I
went into university in Canada
as a passionate writer at heart
but, soon after, got involved in
filmmaking, 3D animation, and
game development as part of my
degree. Along the way I was told
by some very influential and
inspiring individuals that I had
the true makings of a producer at
heart, and that's how my journey
thriving media industry, or any
industry in general, anywhere in
the world but with the amount of
talent I've personally witnessed
so far and the great support from
places like Cartoon Network
Arabia and TwoFour54 I can only
see it going up from here.
PAUL D: What is your ultimate
career goal in cartoon production?
NASSMA: I have faith in the
quality and creativity that can
originate from within this region.
What better and more satisfying
career goal could there be than
becoming one of the front runners
in helping to shape the industry
here - working along with a
group of equally passionate and
experienced individuals. The
big leagues is what most of us
aim for, so executive producing
and creating world class content
wouldn't be so bad either! I'd have
to say I'm off to a good start.
PAUL D: I think so too. Before we
end, let me ask you this, if you
were a cartoon character, what
would you be?
NASSMA: A superhero for sure!
Maybe secretly I’ve always wanted
to be a villain just for fun, but
telekinetic abilities and invisibility
would be pretty cool. How about
you?
PAUL D: I would be a hip-hop
poetry super-hero, destroying evil
characters with a microphone and
positive words! One last question,
who's covering the check?

What do I love most about
being a new age kid? The
change that is unfolding
around me. Maybe it’s
something that happens with
every generation, or maybe it’s
exclusive to us young people of
the technology age - but it sure
as hell is refreshing!
When I was younger, remote
controlled cars were only for
boys, Barbie dolls only for girls,
boys had to have the majority of
their belongings in blue, and girls
in pink. And oh, boys and girls
hated each other. I look around
now and I see guys, of all ages, in
bright pink Lacoste and Hollister
tees and girls in military cargos…
and don’t even talk about the
colour blue – cause it’s all over the
women’s section.
The entire stereotyping of genders
is diminishing, and not just in
terms of clothes. Guys are now
experimenting in the kitchen
and participating in household
matters, while girls are running
errands all by themselves. Taking
a look around the environment
in my university, I see girls
taking charge - as presidents of
clubs, organizational committees,
voluntary services and even
sports departments – which were
solely the territory of the boys
earlier. Sights like these give me a
happy feeling.
Globalization does have its
perks. It has helped to evolve our
thought processes, it made change
the norm and broadened our
horizons. The internet may have
its drawbacks, but it’s also helped
make things easier to achieve.
Ask any child these days, boy or
girl, what their ambition is, and
the replies that you receive may
be very broad, and not just the
narrow and traditional definitions
of doctors and engineers.
Whether it is a pastry chef, or
a prime minister, young people
today have aims, as wide ranging
as the number of people on this
planet. You’ll say kids have always
dreamed big. The only difference
now is the optimism that those big
dreams can be translated
into reality.

interests you and “pin” it to your boards for your followers to see who
will then repin it to their own personal boards, which their followers will
see…and so on. So let’s say you run a hair salon. You can use Pinterest
to show your best hairstyles. When you’re “pinning” these images from
your website, and a follower clicks on the image, they are brought to
your site and your traffic increases.
Though the demographics of Pinterest still trend towards women, the
number of men joining the site is increasing daily. Small businesses can
harness the power of Pinterest by posting creative, eye-catching images
on their websites that include a call to action. These images can then be
“pinned” onto their own boards and then have the potential to be shared
by millions. Increased traffic to your website = a higher percentage of
potential customers and the ability to sell more advertising on your site.
Find some Pinspiration of your own by checking out these businesses
who are winning at pinning!

POINTATME app from Virtual Mob
PAM or Point At Me is a free app that allows users to
Point at Magazine print, Newspapers, Digital Signages,
Billboards, Print ads using their mobile camera and
instantly see the static print come to life! What really
sets PAM apart from its competitors is the automated process that gives
the company the creative reigns, while serving it in a simple ‘drag and
drop’ interface.
PAM’s mission is to break the barrier between brands and Augmented
Reality technology. They set out to achieve this by combining a CMS
platform that allows any company to create their own AR. This is done
without coding on the part of the user, and can be accessed by anyone
through the free PAM Smartphone app. In this way, the company has
significantly reduced cost and increased ease-of-use. PAM’s most obvious
suitor has been print campaigns; bringing a fledgling industry into the
21st century and linking it to the digital age. Augmented reality seems to
be the way of the future, and PAM contends to be the belle of the ball.

START OF INNOVATION IN SOFTWARE
DEVELOPMENT COMPANIES
By Tomislav Buljubasic
How can any software developer become an Innovator?
Is it possible that innovations exist in any software
company?
Software development in small and middle size
companies can be encouraged in the same manner as
in big companies. The effort and the time spent surely
must be scaled, but the general principle which should
bring the innovation culture into the teams can be
copied. The target can be that after introduction of
innovation process following sentences shouldn’t be
heard:
“We are here only to do our job and that is all…”
“We are not supposed to give suggestions.”
“I can have ideas, but no one will care about it.”
“I don’t know what to do with new idea and how will
care about it.”
To encourage new ideas, the process must be build and
it doesn’t have to be complex. Let’s start with answering
first question that can arise:
“Can software developers have ideas?”
Well, everyone can, and the ability to have new ideas
is really close to everyday work of any developer. Let’s
just say that any savings in development, planning,
testing process is a worthful idea.
“What could be the suggestion in software industry?”
Many developers do many small improvements without
recognizing that it was an idea that made some savings
to the company. Some examples can be:
new testing tool which provides more valuable
information in shorter time,
script for making the working environment or
the new mechanism that makes your development
process faster or more efficient.
“Aren’t the new ideas part of our everyday job already?”
To make this visible, whole organization must be
prepared for taking care of such ideas, specially lower
and middle management which should recognize and
evaluate such ideas. This process will add value to any
organization, it will give:
savings of time = money
idea-makers will be recognized
improvement in working environment
new ideas will be encouraged
this will prepare ground for other ideas
knowledge about innovators or creatives in the
organization
In short, introducing of innovation process will give
additional benefit through the savings of money, but
also in increasing the culture inside the organization
and preparing it for next step which should follow –
radical ideas that will come from developers.
WHAT ANALA BEEVERS TEACHES US
ABOUT IDEAS
By Lola Olson
Innovation Excellence
If you’ve been paying attention to the news,
you may have heard Anala Beevers, a four year
old who’s been recently invited to join MENSA.
She’s not only remarkable because of her age,
but because she’s in the highest percentile of
IQs MENSA has to offer. According to People,
Beevers learned the English alphabet at four
months old and numbers in Spanish by age one
and a half.
The New Orleans resident now names capitals
of countries across the world without hesitation
and has no qualms about her achievements.
When asked, “How smart are you?” she’s said,
“Really smart”. Her parents admit that their four
year old daughter is miles ahead of them and she
already has plans to become a nurse when she
grows up so that she can help people.
It’s clear that Beevers would have quite a lot
to teach the average businessperson, but what
her story demonstrates is something more that
people within large companies often forget. A
common acronym used throughout businesses is
the HIPPO, or the Highest Paid Person’s Opinion.
Many articles warn about the dreaded HIPPO
running your company and urge everyone
to be wary, but the truth is that hierarchies
dominate most of the business interactions
we have. And within those hierarchies we’re
encouraged to view certain opinions and ideas
as more valid or more important automatically
due to the hierarchy. And while there are some
hierarchies that make sense (e.g. consulting an
employee who does factory work about factory
work vs. an office employee who’s never done
factory work), sometimes power structures are
the biggest obstacles to innovation, even when
utilising idea software.
Anyone looking at Beevers as just a four year
old child might immediately write her off. When
we picture a “genius” in our heads, it’s usually
an adult, sometimes a man, maybe with a
clipboard in hand and a lab coat. Very rarely do
we assume that a young girl would have what it
takes. But perhaps that’s part of the problem that
keeps us from finding jewels like Beevers within
companies. Our assumption that geniuses come
in one flavour and one look actually harms us
and prevents us from finding the best solutions.
In order to reach a point where a company
becomes innovative, they have to be willing
to look at all ideas democratically and, rather
than factoring in a power structure, they should
factor in experience and knowledge. Maybe
Beevers doesn’t have the same experiences her
parents have in the world because of her age and
she still may have a lot to learn, but she has her
own experience and knowledge to contribute.
Looking at all ideas from the standpoint of what
they provide rather than our assumptions about
who’s providing them can lead us to find the
geniuses within our own companies. And in the
end, that’s what creates solutions and drives
innovations further.
INVESTING IN INNOVATION:
A VENTURE CAPITAL POV
by Deborah Mills-Scofield
Innovation Excellence
As a VC investing in technology-related companies,
be they atoms or bits, the depth and breadth of the
innovation is critical. This is a rather obvious. So
how do I define innovation? Innovation = invention +
commercialization. If it isn’t viable in the market, if it
doesn’t even reach enough of the market to know, it’s
a lovely, but it’s an invention, not an innovation – and
most of us VCs like the latter more.
Take a look at most pitches and usually more slides are
on the technology and functionality than sales and
marketing. Take a look at most ‘use of funds’ and most
of the money goes to product development, with not
that much towards sales and marketing. Granted, in
the early stages there is a lot of discovery to be done on
sales and marketing. That’s ok. We’d like to know the
business’ thoughts on how it is going to find out what
it doesn’t know. Everyone in the room knows there are
a ton of unknowns. It’s ok not to know but a plan for
finding out is critical. VCs know there are risks, and we
want to know how the business will discover, mitigate
and provide contingencies for those risks.
Now maybe I’m a bit unusual in what I’d like to see
and hear from entrepreneurs coming to our firm for
funding, and I probably am. Coming from Bell Labs,
I have a passion for technology…but I also know first
hand that if you don’t market and sell your ‘stuff’, it’s
doesn’t really matter. The Lean Startup Movement
has helped some in terms of getting feedback for the
product or service but it’s not a panacea for identifying
markets, marketing and sales.
Even when the markets and plans for attracting those
markets are identified and great, effective messages
are developed, the gulf between how the startup
wants to sell and how customers want to buy can be
huge. Unless you have the next iPhone and can dictate
the rules of the market, changing customer buying
behavior is not easy and is critical. Startups need to
test and find the balance between how their targeted
customers want to buy and an effective and efficient
way to sell.
So, after 10 years of being a VC, and loving the
opportunity to help companies grow, my advice is don’t
neglect marketing and sales. It’s not as ‘sexy’ or as
fun perhaps as working on the product or service. It’s
usually less tangible, more open to wide interpretation…
but it’s critical. You can have the greatest product or
service in the world, but if no one knows or cares, then
why should I?
SME TOOLKIT
A VALUABLE RESOURCE FOR ENTREPRENEURS
Entrepreneurs in the UAE and the region can benefit significantly from the newly launched SME Toolkit (www.smetoolkit.ae). The SME Toolkit is a project run by the
International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group, through a partnership with the Khalifa Foundation.
Entrepreneurs, whether new startup, or established business, can benefit from the toolkit resources, which include practical how to guides, business forms, case studies
and features. There’s also a global business directory, multilingual community forums and a range of other interactive features. Some of the content is broken down
by business specialty, such as legal and insurance, finance, accounting, sales, marketing and technology. The Toolkit also offers advice on how to increase productivity,
improve distribution, manage capacity, expand buyer networks and access funding. While the IFC also has a global SME Toolkit, its localised websites, such as the one just
launched in the UAE, feature aids that are more relevant to the business requirements of the specific country.

WOMEN IN BUSINESS:
Dr. Alma Kadragic
MEDIA

Year 2013
HOROSCOPE
The National Association of Women
Business Owners or NAWBO was
founded in 1974 and moved its office
to Washington D.C. soon after. It was
instrumental in the 1970s and 1980s in
lobbying Congress for women business
owners to be treated the same way as
men business owners.
This seems obvious, but it wasn’t at
that time. First, since businesses are
registered at the state level and the 50
states are quite different in some of their
legislation; in many states women could
not sign any financial transaction from
a mortgage to a business loan unless the
documents were co-signed by a man.
Second, when government agencies
compiled statistics, they forgot about
women owned businesses. It’s still
possible to find 30 year old versions of
statistics where women’s companies are
dismissed as being small and involved
only in crafts like making jewelry
and ceramic objects. What began as
HR 5050 (originating in the House of
Representatives) acquired a majority
of votes there and was also passed by
the Senate before coming to President
Ronald Reagan for the signature that
would make the bill the law of the land.
On October 28, 1988, he signed with
representatives of NAWBO at his side.
That’s the background behind the 25th
anniversary of the Women’s Business
Act commemorated at the NAWBO
Women’s Business Conference or WBC
in Miami last month. Although I started
my first company in 1990 – just two years
after passage of the Women’s Business
Act - I had no idea about the legislation
that made it possible.
The organizers of WBC wanted to make
sure that the 500 women attending the
conference learned about the Women’s
Business Act and the role of the pioneers
from NAWBO who lobbied for passage of
the Act throughout the country and in
Washington DC.
They decided that the 45 speakers
and panelists at WBC would each be
interviewed at least a month before the
conference. NAWBO members were
asked to volunteer to do the interviews
Forbes recently released its list of the
"50 Most Powerful Women in Business."
The list was intriguing as the top 10
women represented the fields of IT, food,
chemicals, defense and finance. Ages
ranged from 38 to 60, with IT execs the
youngest and food execs on the other end
of the spectrum. Here are the top 10:
Ginni Romety1. (56), Chairman,
President and CEO of IBM, a 102
year old tech giant.
Indra Nooyi2. (57), Chairman and
CEO, PepsiCo, the largest food
and beverage company in the US,
expanded beyond the soda business
entering fast growing categories like
yogurt and hummus. Pepsi today
boasts 22 billion dollar brands.
Ellen Kullman3. (57), Chairman and
CEO, Dupont, a chemical giant over
200 years old.
Marillyn Hewson4. (59), CEO and
President, Lockheed Martin, world’s
largest defense contractor, a global
aerospace, defense, security, and
advanced technology company.
Sheryl Sandberg5. (44), COO,
Facebook, an online social
networking service.
Irene Rosenfeld6. (60), Chairman
and CEO, Mondelez International,
a multinational confectionery, food
and beverage conglomerate, Kraft’s
former global snacking business.
Patricia Woertz7. (60), Chairman,
President and CEO, Archer Daniels
Midland (ADM), American global
food- processing and commodities-
trading corporation.
Marissa Mayer8. (38), President
and CEO, Yahoo, a multinational
Internet corporation.
Meg Whitman9. (57), CEO, HP,
a multinational information
technology corporation.
Abigail Johnson10. (51), President, FMR
(Fidelity Investments), mutual fund
giant with $4.3 trillion in assets
under administration.
The list made me think…how are women
in the Middle East region doing? In
reviewing "Forbes 100 Most Powerful
Women in the World in 2013", only two
women in the Middle East were listed.
Lubna Olayan (58), Deputy Chairperson
and CEO, Olayan Financing Saudi Arabia,
was ranked #92. The Olayan Group, a
Saudi conglomerate, was founded by her
father 66 years ago.
Sheikha Lubna Al Qasimi (67), who was
UAE’s Minister of Foreign Trade at the
time, was ranked #67 out of 100. Sheikha
Lubna is a trailblazer having been the
UAE’s first female minister. Now that
her portfolio has changed since her
appointment as Minister of International
Cooperation and Development, it will be
interesting to see where she ranks next
year. At the Global Clinton Initiative held
in New York in October 2013, Sheikha
Lubna during a discussion about female
decision makers in the global economy
noted the importance of incorporating
more women into management roles.
However, she disagreed with quotas
“because companies, organizations and
entities will start placing women as
window dressing, where they’re not
effective. I’m a firm believer of putting a
woman consciously in an organization
and supporting them to succeed.”
She is right. By supporting women,
not imposing quotas, women can rise
in business. In the UAE, according to a
report by Al Masah Capital, women own
or run about 30 percent of small and
medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). With
70% of the UAE’s growth due to the SME
sector, that is a significant contribution.
Women are also receiving considerable
financial support. According to Hussain
Jasem Al Nowais, Chairman of the
Khalifa Fund, women were awarded
35% of the SME projects they funded
this year. An Arabian Business poll of
the 100 Most Powerful Arab Women
in 2013 awarded 25% of the places to
Emirati women. They were a mix of
political, social and business figures. As
the number of women owned and run
businesses in the UAE increases, the UAE
will likely have more businesswomen
represented not only in regional rankings
but in international rankings as well.

WORLD’S TOP WOMEN IN BUSINESS
by phone, email, or Skype. I volunteered
as well, but in the end I didn’t do any
interviews; instead I edited all of them
into a common format of 300-350 words.
The interviews became a major part of
marketing the conference to potential
attendees and sponsors. Links to groups
of 10 interviews appeared on the email
messages NAWBO began sending every
few days to its huge list of members
and supporters around the country
and overseas. NAWBO partners with
The International Alliance of Women
so several women business owners
from South America and the Caribbean
attended. However, I didn’t see any
from Europe, the Middle East, or the Far
East. On my panel about doing business
internationally, the focus was the
Americas – I was the only one who had
experience in Europe and the Gulf.
Unfortunately, some of the interviews
were never published because we learned
too late the cutoff point was September
15, less than three weeks before the
opening of WBC. If I have the chance to
do it again, I would start the interviews
earlier – summer vacations were a
problem – so that edited versions could
begin to appear six weeks before the start
of the conference.
It should also be possible to record
each interview in video as well as text,
something like mini-TED presentations
to download from the NAWBO website
(www.nawbo.org) or a special conference
site for a brief look at the speakers and
panelists. They were the reason why
most of us attended WBC.

THE PLANETARIANS
www. tempoplanet.com 29
Since the UAE sits right on the
Arabian Gulf, it’s not surprising
that we see our fair share of
drownings. However, when I first
arrived here, I was shocked by
this. Surely most people can swim,
since they live near the water,
right? WRONG.
Another early observation was the
interesting swimming attire. Without
fail, every day at the beach, you can
find a nanny / some guy in jeans trying
to swim or paddle in the water. Next to
them, will be some very covered women,
in what appears to be daywear, also in
the ocean.
Clothes are heavy and restrictive when
wet and don’t make for a leisurely “dip”.
Add in the panic factor and the ever-
present ocean current, and the result is a
bad mix. I know that modesty is an issue-
this is not the place for that discussion.
Drowning is defined by the World
Health Organization, as “the process of
experiencing respiratory impairment
from submersion/immersion in liquid”.
Worldwide approximately 500,000
deaths a year are related to drowning.
Toddlers and older teens are at greatest
risk. Not all drownings are in pools /
lakes / oceans. In fact, many infants
drown in household bathtubs or in large
buckets!
What happens when someone drowns?
The submersion triggers breath holding,
panic and a struggle to get to the
surface. Air hunger sets in, leading to
an involuntary gasp, which results in
aspiration of water directly into the
lungs. Once water gets inside the lungs,
they no longer function as nature
intended them to do. How badly affected
the lungs will be is directly determined
by the quantity of water inhaled. It
doesn’t take much to really affect the
lungs.
The strangest case I have seen was that
of a hotel lifeguard who was found, face
down in the pool he was guarding.
So what can we do? First and foremost
know your own limits. It’s no shame if
you’re a weak swimmer- most people are.
Respect the ocean and the lifeguard’s
warnings. If you have kids, get them a
few swim classes to learn the basics (its
exercise and its fun). Never leave infants
unattended in bathtubs. The risk is real
and totally preventable.
Lastly, as the old saying goes “an ounce of
prevention is worth a pound of cure”.
Save yourself the headache and the
heartache. Be careful.
As much as we talk about
reducing our carbon footprint and
saving the planet, we often don’t
talk about how much this can cost
your pocket to do so.
It’s one thing to try and reduce your
carbon footprint and your impact on the
planet, but what if it costs you more than
you currently pay - then why do it?
Hopefully the suggestions below will
help in saving YOU money, while saving
the planet as well!
PUT DOWN THE TAKEAWAY MENU
Not only does your delivery driver burn
fuel bringing you your food, but in this
region we waste a huge amount of food
that has been flown in from around the
world to reach our shelves and menus.
Instead of ordering delivered food each
lunch time, why not make your lunch at
home and bring it in.
Not only will you be using less fuel, but
you will also be reducing the waste from
packaging and disposable utensils that
will be going straight in the bin. Who
knows, your leftover vegetable soup may
become a new favourite!
CRUISE CONTROL IS YOUR FRIEND
Whilst there are a few of us who drive
at 140 kmph on the Sheikh Zayed Road,
you can save fuel, and money, by using
cruise control as much as possible. This
eliminates the small accelerations and
decelerations and keeps the engine at
a constant rate, saving petrol. Even if
you don’t have cruise control, if you
keep your pace steady, the optimum fuel
saving speeds is often between 40 and 90
kms/h. It also reduces wear and tear on
your car, which means that your break
pads and other replaceable items may not
need to be replaced quite as frequently.
KNOW YOUR PRINTER
Some of us (quite often me) will have
an argument with our printer at some
stage of the day. But you may get a long
with it a little more through a little
investigation. Work out which side of
the page your printer prints on, and
feed in scrap paper the other way up, so
that you use both sides. You may end up
halving your paper costs and reducing
the amount of paper used in your
home and office. You can now also buy
recycled cartridges online, often from
your printer brand who would take the
old casing and put new ink in it again,
thereby saving the plastic packaging
from going in the bin! So, with a little
forethought you’ll see that saving your
money can also help our planet!
THE DROWNING DEBATE
SAVE MONEY,
SAVE THE PLANET
LIBRA
You’ll not be exactly resourceful,
things will mainly develop by
themselves.
Watch your back! There are
people that don’t really like you.
SCORPIO
You like intensity and you’ll have
it. Be careful what you promise
and what comments you make
about other people!
SAGITTARIUS
This month will be a very active
month, in which you can advance
a great deal. You’ll want to take
action independently, to impose
your point of view. In fact, you’ll
look for power. Refrain from
gambling and speculation!
CAPRICORN
The chances for success will
be high, and opportunities will
(obviously) come through other
people. You’ll have the tendency
of being over preoccupied with
others’ problems. Make more time
for yourself!
AQUARIUS
You’ll go through a less exuberant
month. It’s as if you were forced
to face some constraints, as if
you couldn’t go where your heart
wants to be. Pay your bills on
time and don’t take rash financial
decisions!
PISCES
You don’t have to expect too much,
on the contrary, you have to fight
to grab the chance.
Be patient with the others and pay
more attention to communication!

THE WOLF AMONG US!
Telltale Games, makers of the Walking
Dead game series, are back with a new
mystery fantasy called The Wolf Among
Us. They’ve referred to it as ‘season 1’
which suggests they’ve invested a lot in
developing the story line, and hence, in
the short and long term effect of your
choices.
THE STORY!
Set in Fableland - a section of New York
magically cordoned off from the ‘real’
world - this small universe is populated
by fairytale characters banished from
their homeland (wherever that is).
Non-human residents (like trolls and
toads) must purchase enchantments
to maintain a human guise, while the
community is policed by none other than
a reformed Big Bad Wolf.
Despite the fairy tale basis, this is no
children’s story. It’s a proper murder
mystery with a very dark side that has
you playing the Wolf is the sheriff.
Characters start turning up dead and
there’s a long list of suspects as everyone
has a dubious past - including the wolf
himself who has frequent memory
lapses.
You have choices to make that affect
character responses and your reputation,
among other things. One gets the feeling
that seemingly insignificant choices
made now will have major consequences
later. The graphic style is exactly like the
Walking Dead, as is the gameplay. We
have a potential hit on our hands folks.
