 Comes from the Greek Word “Egkrateia”
 Which means “Self-Control”
 Word Occurrence - Found 3 times in the Bible
 In a Nutshell Temperance is “Self Control”, Self –Restraint”
and “Moderation”
Webster Defines Temperance as moderation in action, thought, or feeling

Why Add it to Your Faith?
Temperance
Temperance or the control of self depends upon the believer’s resolve to establish boundaries for
his behavior, actions, and thought processes; and is centered in the decision to exert his will over
the desires, the drives, and the emotions of the body and the mind.
Paul talked gaining control over our flesh…Roman 7:23,
Becoming successful in the fruit of “temperance” depends upon one’s willpower, which
is the strength of will to carry out one’s decisions, wishes, or plans. Exercising the
fruit of “temperance” enables us to live our lives purposefully and resolutely in agreement
with the Word of God. …
This has to be developed and built into the MAN or WOMAN of GOD. 1 Cor 9:23

Angry vs. Anger
Temperance
Is there a difference between being Angry and having Anger
Yes…to be Angry can be a impulsive reaction that can be in mind or facially expressed.
Anger is a period of being Angry that can lead to Sin.
How does the Bible defies “Angry”
1. Greek Word “Orgizo” G3710 which means to provoke or enrage,
(passive) become exasperated
2. Greek Word “Orgilos” G3711 which means soon angry. Irascible.
3. Greek Word “cholao” G5520 which means irritable.

Is it okay to be Angry?
Yes Bible says we can be angry. The Bible is clear that we need to make sure that our anger
does not lead to sin. Saying things out of Anger to be hurtful(Matt 5:22) Getting in loud
shouting matches and slandering (Eph 4:31 “Clamour”).
Read Ephesians 4:26 - Be angry, and do not sin. Can we obey this passage?
Yes we can when we learn to put temperance on and “Master” our reactions
so we don’t lose control.
Is possible to be angry without sinning. Yes

Danger of Anger
Temperance
James 1:19,20 - Be slow to wrath, because the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness
of God. Again, not all anger is forbidden. It does not say to never be angry but to be slow to anger.
The problem with anger is what it
"produces" or leads to.
Proverbs 14:17 - A quick-tempered man acts foolishly. Not all anger is sinful, but we must
take care lest we "fly off the handle," lose control, and act wrongly. [Prov. 29:22]
2 Ways we can sin with Anger
1. Holding it in and letting it fester. When we allow this to happen bitterness and strife
can began to take hold of us. (James 3:14-17, Eph 4:31, Phil 2:3)
2. Blowing up and getting into loud shouting matches. (see pg.10)
