- I read an amazing book - The Brain: the story of you, by David Eagelman. It’s a super book I totally recommend. There's’ one section on empathy. What it is? Eagelman asks: "Why do we care when we watch a movie? We know that it's just actors. And our brain is really only seeing 2-d shapes on a flat screen. Why is it when we go to see movies, we experience strong emotions. Pain, Joy, Happiness, Sadness. Here are three great examples Have you seen 127 Hours? It’s a film about a man who gets trapped by a rock falling on his arm in Utah. After 127 Hours, delirious and dehydrated, he realises his only way to survive is to, yes, CUT OFF HIS OWN ARM. The worst (and best and amazing) thing about this? It’s a true story. But that scene when it actually happens. Oh, sweet exquisite pain is felt by all who see it, if they can keep their eyes open. Misery. Oh ouch. When Annie Wilkes does what she does to Paul Sheldon’s feet with that sledgehammer. Oh boy. Ouch.
- Consider what happens when you experience pain. Imagine if I stabbed your hand with a syringe. There's no single place for pain. Instead the stabbing event activities several different areas of the brain, all operating in concert. This network is summarised as "the pain matrix“ Here's the surprising part: the pain matrix is crucial to how we connect with others. If you watch somebody else get stabbed, most of your pain matrix becomes activated. Not that those areas tell you you've actually been touched, but instead those parts involved in the emotional experience of pain. In other words, watching someone else in pain and being in pain use the same neural machinery. This is the basis of empathy.
- So when we watch him cut off his own arm, our own brains are processing the same neural pain matrix as if it were real. It’s no wonder if hurts so much. To empathise with another person is to literally feel their pain. You run a compelling simulation of what it would be like if you were in that situation. Our capacity for this is why stories - movies, novels, etc - are so absorbing and pervasive across human culture. When experiencing someone elses emotions and stories, your brain is literally simulating those emotions, and this is empathy. From an evolutionary point of view, empathy is useful because it helps us predict what people might do next. “ Empathy makes people connect with
- Now look at this viz again. This viz evokes empathy: outrage at the high rate in the US; sadness at the victims loss. It also piques our interest by how it visually tells this story. So how can we weave empathy into data storytelling, and how can we bring storytelling techniques to our visulaisations?

- Vonnegut is a master at telling stories with data. See how you can tell a story with a simple line chart. Also imagine what emotions a story like this would evoke in your audience.
- There are seven different kinds of data stories. Recognising these story-types in you data will help you create a more compelling and coherent narrative.
- This viz uses colour, a meaningful title, and a strong black line (at the point in time that the vaccination was introduced) to tell this story. What story are they telling? Changes over time, intersection and contrast. What emotions are you feeling? Everyone knows what it’s like to be ill, this viz makes you feel that, and the relief that you won’t have to be sick again.
- This viz breaks the how down into it’s component parts to tell the story of are earthquakes increasing over time. It used annotations to pull out the story which is that, no there aren’t more earthquakes, we’re simply able to measure them better. The use of colour gradient scheme also adds to the point (your eye being drawn to the bright yellow). It also shows that changes over time is one of the most compelling story-types.
- This viz from the guardian shows that even you can make common data realesaes in this case UK housing prices into a personal story. There is a lot packed into this one viz: The overview image, the zoom-in on an area of personal interest to you, how prices have changed over time, AND a real emotional pull of the sense of unaffordability (is this fair? How can I afford to buy near my office? Will I ever be able to afford a house?? – these are just some of the emotionally changed questions this viz makes you ask and feel). The colour scheme is also clear and the deep pinks really stand out. The pop-out boxes are a clever way to add more information to a single image without crowding it.
- This viz shows us an outlier story-type. It highlights the story simply with an informative title and by bolding the outlier – the Unites States. This is a powerful message simply told. It makes you feel outrage at the loss of life, and sadness at it at the same time. It’s also a brilliant example of how basic data-storytelling techniques can be applied to even a simple chart with powerful effect.
- Extra slide if time permits: Hans Rosling is a master at data storytelling. This is one of my favourite examples of storytelling. What emotions does it evoke in you? What story-types is he showing?
