A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Hi I’m Phoebe and today we have been set up with a task to come up with ideas for a new television programme for E6 Global Media. We must conduct research on the potential of our proposed ideas and present the results of our research to the station executive director Damen Bramwell.
We must conduct successful research to determine the potential in our ideas of our specific programme.
We must then prepare a presentation to share our ideas.
When we were coming up with ideas for the television show, we had to conduct some primary research to help us finalise our idea. We thought the best primary research to conduct was a questionnaire that we sent out to a section of our target audience as well as embedding it on social media channels.
We wanted to find out what TV genres were the most popular with teenagers. The results showed that reality shows were the most popular, with sitcoms and teen dramas coming close behind. This shows that a reality TV show would be most successful if it was aired as there seems to be a gap in the market for it. Panel shows received the lowest score as it doesn’t appeal to a younger audience and so if we were to broadcast that then it would be unsuccessful. The conclusions of this research shows that a reality show would be most successful, but shows like panel shows and news and current affairs would be least.
We can see from these results that Channel 5 would be unsuitable to show our new programme on as it’s the least common channel which shows reality programmes. We can see that E4 is the most popular television channel with teenagers as 80% of our respondents watch E4 which is what we would then want to show our television programme on. This shows us that we would get the most viewings if it was showed on a channel such as ITV 1 or E4 as these are the most commonly watched, unlike BBC 2 or Channel 5.
We can see from these results that 48% of respondents watch programmes on their TV opposed to 12% which watch them on demand. This shows us as programme makers that our show would be most successful if we showed it on proper TV rather than on laptop or on demand, although streaming such as Netflix is common too.
This question shows us that the same amount of people have no opinion with the statement “I only watch late night television (after 10pm) if I can record them for another day” as disagree with it. Less people agree with this statement than disagree with it which shows that if we did want to put our television programme on late then 10 out of 31 people would record it for another day and 21 would watch it when it was on. If we wanted as many viewers as possible then we should play it before 10pm so that all people can watch rather than just those that stay up late. Our results show that more people prefer to view programmes that are free to watch, 14 people would only watch free shows but 13 people would pay. 4 people have no opinion on this matter. We would want to therefore make our show free to view in order to receive the most viewings.
These results show that a dance contest would not be suitable to make a new good reality TV show, or would a singing contest. The reasoning for this is that there is no gap in the market for these types on programmes as television is already overloaded with them, such as Got to Dance, X Factor, The Voice and many others. Viewers are getting bored of the same things over and over. Dragon’s Den would also be unsuccessful as there is no gap in the market for that either as only 3.23% of people would enjoy watching it. A cooking show came second in this question as Great British Bake Off did extremely well this year and the theme of cooking is currently very successful in television with 29.03% of respondents thinking that this would be a good reality show. In first place came young people’s lives, although Geordie Shore, The Only Way is Essex and Made in Chelsea are all very popular, teenagers love indulging in other teenagers’ lives and so this would clearly be the best reality show to broadcast to get the highest viewings.
We wanted to find out our respondents’ views on the three following statements: “I love reality TV shows”, “Reality TV shows are rigged/scripted” and “Reality TV shows are only for young people”. The bigger the bar, the more people agree with the statement. 15 out of our 31 respondents agree or strongly agree that they love reality TV shows and only 6 disagree or strongly disagree. This shows that more people would enjoy our reality TV show than not, making it worthwhile producing it. 22 of our 31 respondents agree or strongly agree that reality TV shows are rigged or scripted, which although is slightly negative, doesn’t deter viewers from watching them and so our new show could still be successful. The last statement “Reality TV shows are only for young people” received the most disagree or strongly disagree responses with 21 in total. This shows us from this research that people from all age groups may watch our show and therefore it would be successful for all age ranges.
We wanted to find out how many hours a day people watch TV. The most popular response was 2-3 hours at 29.03% and the least popular response was 5 hours at 6.45%. We would not want to take up too much of the respondents television watching time but would want them to watch our programme and so would make it an hour long, as second most popular response was 0-1 hours. Everybody in our survey watches at least 1 hour and so we would want to make them watch our show in that hour, or spend their viewing time watching our show then.
We wanted to find out what time of day is appropriate to show a new reality TV show. The respondents’ answers convey to us that most people are busy doing other things during the day and therefore wouldn’t be able to watch and therefore a massive 70% of our 31 respondents said evening would be the best time to show it. The second most popular answer was night time which 5 people responded. These results show that evening would be the most appropriate time to show a new reality programme, as most people have finished working and come home from school/college wanting to relax and watch TV.
We wanted to find out how often we should air our new reality TV show. The respondents showed us that once a week would be the best decision on how often to air it as this is what 12 responded. To keep views high and the viewers interested, I think that showing it once a week, like X Factor, will make sure not to lose interest and want to watch it. The lowest response was once a fortnight at 3.13%.
We wanted to find out who would be best at presenting a new reality TV show. The highest response was Ant and Dec who received 49% of the responses. These would have been chosen as they’re current and in popular shows such as Britain’s Got Talent and I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here. The least chosen response was Brian Dowling as fewer people know who he is as he only does Big Brother on Channel 5, which has proven to be a less watched channel by teenagers on question 2. A respondent said that no one should present as it’s possible that it could run by itself depending on the type of reality TV show such as Geordie Shore. Alan Carr, Bradley Walsh and Davina McCall all received the same amount of responses, showing that they are not extremely popular with teenagers. We would not use these people to present as our viewers would not enjoy them, rather than Ant and Dec to keep people interested.
For Secondary Research, I have conducted research on the British Teen Reality show "Made In Chelsea".
I am going to compare the viewings & ratings of this popular show to get an idea of whether or not our show would be successful.
The Made In Chelsea: New York the new series aired on E4 series opened with 520k (2.3%) at 9pm, with an added 205k (1.2%) on +1. This is down from the series seven launch overnight ratings of 730k.
Ratings: 5.0/10 from 1,284 users on IMDB.
The Only Way Is Essex is another popular teenage show. We are aiming at a teenage audience at teenagers which is why we will also air our show on E4. E4 is the entertainment destination for a cutting edge young audience.
-Its eccentric and witty persona and strong branding make it a massive talking point.
-E4 is on Freeview, DSAT and cable, and E4 HD on Sky increasing its audience potential big time.
-It also won channel of the year at The Broadcast Awards in Feb 2011.
