Overview
The Letterman Digital Arts Campus and the New Media Arts Center is located in
the heart of the Precidio which is one of the most historic landmarks located in San
Francisco, CA. This campus is made up of four buildings which is the headquaters to
Lucas Films, and the Industrial Light and Magic Animation.

The site of the Digital Arts Campus features four 5 story office buildings that totals
up to approximately 850.000 square feet. All buildings feature views of the San Francisco
Palace of Fine Arts and the Golden Gate Bridge. Situated in the middle of a 23 acre
campus is a 17 acre public park which contains resplendent landscaping and a creek-
fad lagoon which is used as the focal point of the site. The buildings are certified with
Gold LEED rating from the U.S. Green Building Council. Key efficiency measures include
raised floor, operatable windows, central stair and displacement ventilation. Raised
floors house HVAC and all cabling creating comfortable, flexible and productive work
environments
There are multiple transportation methods to get yourself to this campus including
Downtown Bart from the Ferry Building, Free Shuttles the transport people within the
National Park area, the MUNI, and the Golden Gate Transit bus stop.

The new 435,000 square feet Facebook west campus is designed by Frank
Gehry, and is located on a property of approximately 22 acres large, across the
Bayfront expressway from the company’s previous headquarter building. The
building was previously occupied by Tyco Electronics before Facebook
brought the property and demolished the previous existing buildings. The
area is commonly known as Silicon Valley which houses most of the big tech
industries in the world, which makes it appropriate to have the new Facebook
west campus.
The two-story building dips and rises from 45 to 73 feet in height, and it
includes an on grade surface parking area that holds 347 parking spaces for
the 2800 employees the building is able to withhold. The main open office
space is located directly above the parking, and the office level is topped with
9 acres of a fully accessible rooftop park, which features a half-mile walking
trail and houses over 400 trees.
The building incorporates an open office space concept that is only one
story high with a 22 foot high ceiling and there are no individual closed office
spaces to encourage a group working environment and fluidity amongst the
movement within the office space.

Overview
The California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) is an agency in the
California executive branch that "manages pension and health benefits for more than 1.6
million California public employees, retirees, and their families". In fiscal year 2012–13,
CalPERS paid over $12.7 billion in retirement benefits, and in fiscal year 2013 it is estimated
that CalPERS will pay over $7.5 billion in health benefits.
As of June 30, 2014, CalPERS managed the largest public pension fund in the United States,
with $300.3 billion in assets CalPERS is known for its shareholder activism; stocks placed
on its "Focus List" may perform better than other stocks, which has given rise to the term
"CalPERS effect". Outside the U.S., CalPERS has been called "a recognized global leader in
the investment industry", and "one of America's most powerful shareholder bodies".

Overview
Cisco Systems was founded in December 1984 by Leonard Bosack, who was
in charge of the Stanford University computer science department's computers,
and his wife Sandy Lerner, who managed the Graduate School of Business'
computers.
The name "Cisco" was derived from the city name, San Francisco, which is why
the company's engineers insisted on using the lower case "cisco" in its early
years. The logo is intended to depict the two towers of the Golden Gate Bridge.
The compound consists of five identical shape buildings radiating from a circular
courtyard situated in the middle of the compound.

Overview
The oracle campus located on 300 Oracle Parkway in Redwood Shores in California is
a great site for a computer technology corporation. The site seems exclusive being in
the middle of the shore and surrounded by a large water body. The design of the site
was made to have the island feel for privacy as well as a great viewing point.
The water body in the middle of the site acts as an imitation of the larger water body
at the north side of the site, producing a more stunning aesthetic when one visits the
site. The design and placement of each building seems like it is conducted by the water
body, for example, the inner buildings were made to face the inner water body to create
a fan like shape. While on the other hand, the outer larger buildings were made to look
out onto the larger water body while maintaining the fan like site design.
Webcor (the builder) was asked to construct each of the remaining phases of the
entire 60 acre campus (First phase being the inner buildings.) Accommodating Oracle’s
workforce of 5,500 employees and increasing each year. The campus includes 6
office buildings, 4 parking structures, a conference center, fitness center, and a utility
substation totalling a stunning 2.9 million square feet.
According to www.webcor.com, The primary challenge of the project was the
mitigation of pervasive mud within the site from the adjacent San Francisco Bay.
Webcor engineered foundation systems to compensate for the muddy soil and also
accommodated the unusual underground obstructions created by Marine World’s
nearby whale aquarium tanks.
The first parking structure was designed and located to provide the most effect
construction with the highest number of stalls for cars, hence, the many big parking
spaces available throughout the site.

The Gates Foundation was given a gold by LEED (The Leadership in Energy and
Environmental Design) for program spaces. It is the largest private foundation. The
foundations main goal is to globally increase health care at the same time as reducing poverty.
In America their goal is to enhance the opportunities for education and provide technology as
a resource. The Gates foundation is known for its charitable donations. To maintain its status
the foundation has to donate 5% of its equity each year.
The underground parking garage is 5 stories and holds 1,020 stalls. The entrance for the
garage is located on 5th Ave N. The average total Property Area of this project is 400,000
square-feet. One of the reasons why the Gates Foundation was awarded LEED Gold is
because of its half an acre green roof. There is also a storage system that holds rainwater.
The Gates foundation consist of two six story office buildings, one underground five
floor parking garage, and a visitor center. In between the building Footprint, there is a
courtyard that has both hard and softscape spaces that creates beautiful communal spaces.
This area holds two long rectangular Water WSH (Sanitation and Hygiene). These are good
for the environment and are also beautiful features of the foundation. One can enjoy the view
or go for a nice walk. There are well-placed bridges, over the water features, that connects to
open Hardscape space.

Overview
The California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) Headquarters Complex
is a mixed-use development integrating corporate office space, retail space and below-
grade parking. The site comprises two contiguous blocks, and they are bound by 3rd,
5th, P, and R Streets, located in Sacramento's downtown adjacent to their existing
headquarters. The CalPERS Headquarters is also home to the Sacramento Regional
Office. CalPERS complex includes the original CalPERS building (Lincoln Plaza North),
Lincoln Plaza East, Lincoln Plaza West, and Lincoln Plaza South. The building's design is
a response to both Sacramento's urban fabric and to CalPERS' sustainable design goals.
The Complex is composed of 2 U-shaped buildings of 4 and 6 floors that form a public
courtyard. The structures are linked by exterior walkways and bisected by a public plaza
and a mews for pedestrians and vehicles.
The exterior skin incorporates sunshades, light shelves, and planters, helping the
building exceed California's aggressive energy efficiency requirements. The clear glass
curtain wall integrates canopies and trellises to effectively blend interior and exterior
space. In addition, the building's fenestration changes from street to street in response
to sun orientation, internal program requirements, and neighborhood adjacencies.
The site clearing and soil remediation began in April 2001 and was completed in
October 2001 allowing for new construction to begin. Groundbreaking for the new
CalPERS Headquarters Complex took place on October 15, 2001. Members of CalPERS
Board of Administration and executive staff were joined by Sacramento City staff,
community officials, and neighbors to officially kick-off the construction phase. Mass
excavation and construction of the slurry wall started in October 2001 was completed
May 2002. A permanent site barrier eliminating the parking and sidewalks around the
entire two blocks was installed. Contract work also included the removal of existing
concrete slabs, loading docks, foundations, hydraulic lifts, pavement, railroad tracks, and
excavation and disposal of contaminated soil.

OVERVIEW
The Googleplex is the corporate headquarters complex of Google, Inc., located
at 1600 Amphitheatre Parkway in Mountain View, Santa Clara County, California,
United States, near San Jose.
The complex was previously occupied by Silicon Graphics (SGI). The office space
and corporate campus is located within a larger 26-acre (110,000 m2) site that
contains Charleston Park, a 5-acre (20,000 m2) public park; improved access to
Permanente Creek; and public roads that connect the corporate site to Shoreline
Park and the Bay Trail.
The former SGI facilities were leased by Google beginning in 2003. A redesign of
the interiors was completed by Clive Wilkinson Architects in 2005. In June 2006,
Google purchased some of Silicon Graphics' properties, including the Googleplex,
for $319 million.
Since the buildings are of relatively low height, the complex sprawls out over a la-
rge area of land. The interior of the headquarters is furnished with items like shade
lamps and giant rubber balls. The lobby contains a piano and a projection of curr-
ent live Google search queries. Facilities include free laundry rooms (Buildings 40,
42 & CL3), two small swimming pools, multiple sand volleyball courts, and eight-
een cafeterias with diverse menus.
"Googleplex" is a portmanteau of Google and complex and a reference to goog-
olplex, the name given to the large number 10(10100), or 10googol (with compl-
ex meaning a complex of buildings).

The Pixar Animation Studio was designed by Bohlin Cywinski Jackson. The firm
worked directly with CEO Steve Jobs on a new headquarters for Pixar. He wanted
it to be in the San Francisco Bay Area. The buildings are located in Emeryville, CA
which is in the north bay area. The site is located in the city's warehouse district.
The materials chosen and craftsmanship of them give the building an industrial
aesthetic.
The site spans about 15 acres of paths and landscaping features. The paths
connect many recreational activites such as basketball courts and a pool around
the site. The paths are lined with many trees giving it a sense of walking through
a forest. A park is located in front of the building that features radial walkways
expanding from a center point. To the left of the park a full sized soccer field can
be found. A jogging trail is located around the permeter of the lot.

BusinessWeek/ Architectural Record Award in 1998 for this environmentally sensitive and
sound project. The Gap Headquarters won the 2003 Green Roofs for Healthy Cities Award
of Excellence in the New Extensive category.
901 Cherry is designed to be a great place to work. People working here feel like they are
spending the day outside, enjoying abundant daylight, fresh air at their control and multiple
views of the outdoors. Loft-like openness and generous common spaces encourage both
planned and informal interaction, creating a strong sense of community. The undulating
70,000 square foot roof is covered in native grasses and wildflowers, echoing the coastal
savannah ecosystem. While responding to the surrounding terrain, this grass roof reduces
stormwater from the site, provides tempering thermal mass, protects the roof membrane,
and dampens noise from the nearby airport. The building integrates many innovative design
strategies, including raised flooring, displacement ventilation, operable windows and extensive
daylighting, all justified through rigorous cost-benefit analyses. Designed as a build-to-suit
for Gap Inc, 901 Cherry is now the home of YouTube LLC, a Google-owned company,
illustrating that a building design as a flexible and adaptable organism can successfully
adapt to new user groups. As a result of its unique advanced integration of building systems,
Pacific Gas and Electric has recognized the building as the second-most energy-efficient office
building in the state.
The Gap green-roofs are made of a hot rubberized asphalt waterproofing membrane,
topped by a root barrier and six inches of extruded polystyrene insulation. The insulation is
topped by drainage boards, which are in turn covered with filter fabric to keep fine growth
media particles out of the drainage material. American Hydrotechy supplied the green-
roof’s components. Six inches of engineered soil are planted with native indigenous grasses
and wildflowers, which were cultivated from native grasslands in San Francisco. This self-
sustaining, low maintenance extensive green-roof provides extraordinary thermal and acoustic
insulation and will contribute to increased energy savings year-round (Kevin Burke, project
manager, personal communication, March 1999).

Overview
The Hewlett-Packard company was founded on January 1, 1939 by David Packard and
William Redington Hewlett. Together they created what would become a very successful
soft-ware and computer hardware company. In 1966 the Hewlett-Packard Labs located in
Palo Alto, CA by a San Francisco-based architectural design firm, Gensler, was completed.
This commercial Lab was built and designed to be the Hewlett-Packard Headquaters where
the HP researchers that are pursuing advances in fields such as analytics, systems research,
networking and mobility, printing, and content.
The Hewlett-Packard Labs building is 2 stories, 40' from grade, and has a foot print area that
takes up approximately 385,700 SF or 22.2% of the 1,737,288 SF (40 acres) property area.
Within this site there is not only the building foot print area. There are also softscape and
hardscape areas. The softscape area covers 238,625 SF or 13.74% of the site. The hardscape
areas comsumes 1,112,963, SF or 64.06% of the site. This large ammount of hardscape area
is filled with approximately 1,320 surface parking spaces. This means there are about 7.8
parking spaces per 1,000 SF of office space.

Overview
With the West Coast Programming Center, IBM continued its trend of building
corporate campuses away from metropolitan areas. The project was designed on a large
1000+ acre property that occupied the edge of the Santa Clara Valley into the Santa Cruz
landscape of seasonal grass and remnant fruit orchards. The site displayed a taut, distilled
almost ethereal design of crisp concrete and lawn geometries against rolling California
coastal grasslands. The site displayed a taut, distilled almost ethereal design of crisp

regarding moving away from operability and towards an inert building skin. These
environmental conditions. The complex consisted of eight cruciform buildings, each four
contained classrooms, meeting rooms, dining areas, a recreation section and medical
facilities; below the buildings, insulated by earth. The plaza serves as an aesthetic and
functional linkage for a series of surrounding buildings integrated into a rolling foothill
site through use of appropriate plant materials and grading. Because of the natural beauty
understated elegance of the buildings. The complex was oriented on a cross axis, the top
of which pointed northwest. To the west of the central NW-SE axis, three buildings were

courtyard color continued on the interior. Seen from Bailey Road on the south, each unit's
exterior had a uniform Modern look, covered in aluminum panels and a relentless grid of
rectangular windows resembling a computer punch card.

Overview
IBM Almaden Research Center is one of the twelve worldwide research institution of IBM.
Scientists that work that apply researches in computer science, services, storage systems,
Research.
Almaden's research focuses on solving problems in areas such as atomic scale storage, food
location, Silicon Valley. Many say that without IBM Almaden Research Center, Silicon Valley
might have not existed as well. Almaden plays an important role to its' location because it
provided technological advances that drove the companies in the area to its success. It also
provided many jobs available for people in the valley.
Almaden was a research center that was built long before the founders of Google and
Facebook were born. In the year of 1952, the company wanted to open a lab in San Jose, that
is why the engineer, Rey Johnson was sent there. He stated, "IBM wasn't a place to work, it
was a way of life at one point."

  • 2. The new 435,000 square feet Facebook west campus is designed by Frank Gehry, and is located on a property of approximately 22 acres large, across the Bayfront expressway from the company’s previous headquarter building. The building was previously occupied by Tyco Electronics before Facebook brought the property and demolished the previous existing buildings. The area is commonly known as Silicon Valley which houses most of the big tech industries in the world, which makes it appropriate to have the new Facebook west campus. The two-story building dips and rises from 45 to 73 feet in height, and it includes an on grade surface parking area that holds 347 parking spaces for the 2800 employees the building is able to withhold. The main open office space is located directly above the parking, and the office level is topped with 9 acres of a fully accessible rooftop park, which features a half-mile walking trail and houses over 400 trees. The building incorporates an open office space concept that is only one story high with a 22 foot high ceiling and there are no individual closed office spaces to encourage a group working environment and fluidity amongst the movement within the office space. The site seems exclusive being in the middle of the shore and surrounded by a large water body. The design of the site was made to have the island feel for privacy as well as a great viewing point. The water body in the middle of the site acts as an imitation of the larger water body at the north side of the site, producing a more stunning aesthetic when one visits the site. The design and placement of each building seems like it is conducted by the water body, for example, the inner buildings were made to face the inner water body to create a fan like shape. While on the other hand, the outer larger buildings were made to look out onto the larger water body while maintaining the fan like site design. Webcor (the builder) was asked to construct each of the remaining phases of the entire 60 acre campus (First phase being the inner buildings.) Accommodating Oracle’s workforce of 5,500 employees and increasing each year. The campus includes 6 office buildings, 4 parking structures, a conference center, fitness center, and a utility substation totalling a stunning 2.9 million square feet. According to www.webcor.com, The primary challenge of the project was the mitigation of pervasive mud within the site from the adjacent San Francisco Bay. Webcor engineered foundation systems to compensate for the muddy soil and also accommodated the unusual underground obstructions created by Marine World’s nearby whale aquarium tanks. The first parking structure was designed and located to provide the most effect construction with the highest number of stalls for cars, hence, the many big parking spaces available throughout the site. It is the largest private foundation. The foundations main goal is to globally increase health care at the same time as reducing poverty. In America their goal is to enhance the opportunities for education and provide technology as a resource. The Gates foundation is known for its charitable donations. To maintain its status the foundation has to donate 5% of its equity each year. The underground parking garage is 5 stories and holds 1,020 stalls. The entrance for the garage is located on 5th Ave N. The average total Property Area of this project is 400,000 square-feet. One of the reasons why the Gates Foundation was awarded LEED Gold is because of its half an acre green roof. There is also a storage system that holds rainwater. The Gates foundation consist of two six story office buildings, one underground five floor parking garage, and a visitor center. In between the building Footprint, there is a courtyard that has both hard and softscape spaces that creates beautiful communal spaces. The site comprises two contiguous blocks, and they are bound by 3rd, 5th, P, and R Streets, located in Sacramento's downtown adjacent to their existing headquarters. The CalPERS Headquarters is also home to the Sacramento Regional Office. CalPERS complex includes the original CalPERS building (Lincoln Plaza North), Lincoln Plaza East, Lincoln Plaza West, and Lincoln Plaza South. The building's design is a response to both Sacramento's urban fabric and to CalPERS' sustainable design goals. The Complex is composed of 2 U-shaped buildings of 4 and 6 floors that form a public courtyard. The structures are linked by exterior walkways and bisected by a public plaza and a mews for pedestrians and vehicles. The exterior skin incorporates sunshades, light shelves, and planters, helping the building exceed California's aggressive energy efficiency requirements. The clear glass curtain wall integrates canopies and trellises to effectively blend interior and exterior space. In addition, the building's fenestration changes from street to street in response to sun orientation, internal program requirements, and neighborhood adjacencies. The site clearing and soil remediation began in April 2001 and was completed in October 2001 allowing for new construction to begin. Groundbreaking for the new CalPERS Headquarters Complex took place on October 15, 2001. Members of CalPERS Board of Administration and executive staff were joined by Sacramento City staff, community officials, and neighbors to officially kick-off the construction phase. Mass excavation and construction of the slurry wall started in October 2001 was completed May 2002. A permanent site barrier eliminating the parking and sidewalks around the entire two blocks was installed. Contract work also included the removal of existing concrete slabs, loading docks, foundations, hydraulic lifts, pavement, railroad tracks, and excavation and disposal of contaminated soil. The complex was previously occupied by Silicon Graphics (SGI). The office space and corporate campus is located within a larger 26-acre (110,000 m2) site that contains Charleston Park, a 5-acre (20,000 m2) public park; improved access to Permanente Creek; and public roads that connect the corporate site to Shoreline Park and the Bay Trail. The former SGI facilities were leased by Google beginning in 2003. A redesign of the interiors was completed by Clive Wilkinson Architects in 2005. In June 2006, Google purchased some of Silicon Graphics' properties, including the Googleplex, for $319 million. Since the buildings are of relatively low height, the complex sprawls out over a la- rge area of land. The interior of the headquarters is furnished with items like shade lamps and giant rubber balls. The lobby contains a piano and a projection of curr- ent live Google search queries. Facilities include free laundry rooms (Buildings 40, 42 & CL3), two small swimming pools, multiple sand volleyball courts, and eight- een cafeterias with diverse menus. Kopp Fwy Grundy Ln Bayhill Dr CherryAve Shunyi Yang (Vicny) ARH 240 Project 2 Spring 2016 Overview William McDonough + Partners of Virginia designed the $60 million Gap Headquarters at 901 Cherry Avenue in San Bruno, California with undulating green-roofs in 1997. McDonough was voted by Time Magazine for his ecological designs, and won the BusinessWeek/ Architectural Record Award in 1998 for this environmentally sensitive and sound project. The Gap Headquarters won the 2003 Green Roofs for Healthy Cities Award of Excellence in the New Extensive category. 901 Cherry is designed to be a great place to work. People working here feel like they are spending the day outside, enjoying abundant daylight, fresh air at their control and multiple views of the outdoors. Loft-like openness and generous common spaces encourage both planned and informal interaction, creating a strong sense of community. The undulating 70,000 square foot roof is covered in native grasses and wildflowers, echoing the coastal savannah ecosystem. While responding to the surrounding terrain, this grass roof reduces stormwater from the site, provides tempering thermal mass, protects the roof membrane, and dampens noise from the nearby airport. The building integrates many innovative design strategies, including raised flooring, displacement ventilation, operable windows and extensive daylighting, all justified through rigorous cost-benefit analyses. Designed as a build-to-suit for Gap Inc, 901 Cherry is now the home of YouTube LLC, a Google-owned company, illustrating that a building design as a flexible and adaptable organism can successfully adapt to new user groups. As a result of its unique advanced integration of building systems, Pacific Gas and Electric has recognized the building as the second-most energy-efficient office building in the state. The Gap green-roofs are made of a hot rubberized asphalt waterproofing membrane, topped by a root barrier and six inches of extruded polystyrene insulation. The insulation is topped by drainage boards, which are in turn covered with filter fabric to keep fine growth media particles out of the drainage material. American Hydrotechy supplied the green- roof’s components. Six inches of engineered soil are planted with native indigenous grasses and wildflowers, which were cultivated from native grasslands in San Francisco. This self- sustaining, low maintenance extensive green-roof provides extraordinary thermal and acoustic insulation and will contribute to increased energy savings year-round (Kevin Burke, project manager, personal communication, March 1999). Together they created what would become a very successful soft-ware and computer hardware company. In 1966 the Hewlett-Packard Labs located in Palo Alto, CA by a San Francisco-based architectural design firm, Gensler, was completed. This commercial Lab was built and designed to be the Hewlett-Packard Headquaters where the HP researchers that are pursuing advances in fields such as analytics, systems research, networking and mobility, printing, and content. The Hewlett-Packard Labs building is 2 stories, 40' from grade, and has a foot print area that takes up approximately 385,700 SF or 22.2% of the 1,737,288 SF (40 acres) property area. Within this site there is not only the building foot print area. There are also softscape and hardscape areas. The softscape area covers 238,625 SF or 13.74% of the site. The hardscape areas comsumes 1,112,963, SF or 64.06% of the site. This large ammount of hardscape area is filled with approximately 1,320 surface parking spaces. This means there are about 7.8 parking spaces per 1,000 SF of office space. Hewlett-Packard Labs Palo Alto, CA

The complex consisted of eight cruciform buildings, each four contained classrooms, meeting rooms, dining areas, a recreation section and medical facilities; below the buildings, insulated by earth. The plaza serves as an aesthetic and functional linkage for a series of surrounding buildings integrated into a rolling foothill site through use of appropriate plant materials and grading. Because of the natural beauty understated elegance of the buildings. The complex was oriented on a cross axis, the top of which pointed northwest. To the west of the central NW-SE axis, three buildings were axis, providing views of the main courtyard and the multi-purpose center. Each identical, courtyard color continued on the interior. Seen from Bailey Road on the south, each unit's exterior had a uniform Modern look, covered in aluminum panels and a relentless grid of rectangular windows resembling a computer punch card. Scientists that work that apply researches in computer science, services, storage systems, Research. Almaden's research focuses on solving problems in areas such as atomic scale storage, food location, Silicon Valley. Many say that without IBM Almaden Research Center, Silicon Valley might have not existed as well. Almaden plays an important role to its' location because it provided technological advances that drove the companies in the area to its success. It also provided many jobs available for people in the valley. Almaden was a research center that was built long before the founders of Google and Facebook were born. In the year of 1952, the company wanted to open a lab in San Jose, that is why the engineer, Rey Johnson was sent there. He stated, "IBM wasn't a place to work, it was a way of life at one point."
