LEED/Sustainable Design ProjectsLEED Certified ProjectsBattery Park City, Site 18A – The Solaire – LEED Gold CertifiedNew York, NYThis new residential building includes 290 rental apartments and was the first build-ing designed in accordance with new environmental guidelines instituted in 2000 bythe Battery Park City Authority (BPCA), the government entity that has overseen thedevelopment of Battery Park City since 1969. The Solaire is the first high-rise residen-tial building in the United States to obtain a LEED Gold Rating.Owens Corning World Headquarters LEED EB Silver CertifiedToledo, OHThis 450,000 sq ft headquarters includes general office space and specialty spacewith cafeteria, conference rooms, multi media room and a health clinic and othersupport facilities. Efficient and flexible mechanical systems allow instantaneouschanges in space planning without bringing in outside contractors. This was the firstapplication of a major underfloor air delivery system to a corporate headquarters inthe U.S. 10 years after its completion, the project received a LEED EB Silver Rating.Logan International Airport - Delta Airlines Terminal A RedevelopmentLEED CertifiedEast Boston, MAThe first major U.S. terminal built since 9/11, this airport facility includes a 362,000sq ft main terminal and a 284,000 sq ft satellite concourse that are connected by anunderground pedestrian moving walkway. The $494 million project was designedand engineered to meet Massport’s 2001 guidelines for sustainable airport construc-tion and includes such features water-efficient plumbing and irrigation; extensivedaylighting and high-insulation glass; energy-efficient electric lighting; constructionwaste recycling; and the use of recycled, local materials. This is the world’s firstairport facility to achieve LEED certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.Takeda Pharmaceuticals North America, Inc. Headquarters CampusLEED Gold CertifiedLake County, ILThis initial office building campus project consisted of the construction of the first twofive-story office buildings encompassing 360,000 sq ft and remote receiving/deliveryand daycare facilities and a multi-level parking garage. The remaining master planbuilding phases will ultimately include over 1 million sq ft of office buildings andsupporting structures. Phase I included such employee amenities as a campus widecafeteria/dining facility and a fitness center. The project, which will qualify for LEEDGold Rating, includes an underfloor air distribution system throughout.Cosentini Associates

LEED/Sustainable Design ProjectsHarvard University, Graduate Student Housing at One Western AvenueLEED Silver CertifiedAllston, MAThis new high-rise dormitory building of 282,000 sq ft includes dormitory rooms andstudy lounges, 33 new 4-bedroom, 4-bathroom apartments, a 2,000 sq ft commonsroom with a residential kitchen and structured parking for 625 cars. This project wasthe first on Harvard University’s campus to obtain a LEED rating.Battery Park City, Site 19B - Tribeca Green – LEED Gold CertifiedNew York, NYThis 357,000 sq ft residential high-rise was engineered to maximize both operationalcost savings and to promote a health indoor environment for residents. The 270-unit facility also includes a 3,500 sq ft lobby, a state-of-the-art health club, a busi-ness center, open public space, and a cellar level. Power and hot water for this newresidential high-rise apartment building are generated by a cogeneration system thatincludes a 60kW micro turbine that provides 10% of the base building energy andelectricity on a 24/7 basis and uses waste heat to heat the hot water. In addition, thisproject has a black water treatment system to treat all waste water for re-use in flush-ing of apartment toilets and for cooling tower make-up. There will also be a stormcistern to capture storm water for the building’s irrigation requirements.Emory University, Roberto C. Goizueta Business School, LEED EB Gold CertifiedAtlanta, GAThis 110,000 sq ft business school includes an information/data center, 200-seatauditorium, classrooms, lecture halls and faculty offices. Total construction cost was$20 million. This project was the first university project in the country to obtain a LEEDEB rating.Kimball International Showroom – LEED CI CertifiedChicago, ILThis 20,000 sq ft showroom features high-quality retail furniture integrated into asimulated office floor plan in an existing building. The project obtained a LEED CIRating for while maintaining the required showroom effect through detailed lightingdesign to meet power densities and controls standards.Tufts University Sophia Gordon Residence Hall – LEED Gold CertifiedMedford, MAThis undergraduate dormitory includes single and double rooms for 126 students(approximately 50,000 sq ft) and a 150-seat multi-purpose room. The building isexpected to use 30 percent less energy and 30 percent less water than conventionallydesigned buildings. Rooftop solar thermal and photovoltaic panels help to heat waterand generate supplemental power for the building.Cosentini Associates

LEED/Sustainable Design ProjectsCitigroup Court Square Phase I and II – LEED Gold CertifiedLong Island City, NYPhase I of this project is a 15-story, 528,000 sq ft office building that includes atraining center, an auditorium at the second and third floors, and a centralized datacenter. Phase II encompasses approximately 1.2 million sq ft of office space beingdeveloped above and around the Phase I building. This portion will be provided withraised flooring to optimize configuration flexibility. All chilled water and condenserwater, emergency power systems and building controls will be connected from PhaseII to Phase I. This building uses a high efficiency central chiller plant, low temperatureair distribution and high efficiency lighting design. In addition, landscape irrigationand cooling tower make-up are served with water from an in building 25,000 gallonstorm water storage tank.Harvard University, Schlesinger Library Renovation – LEED CertifiedCambridge, MAThis project entailed the complete renovation of an existing building’s interior tocreate a 2-story reading room and improve the environmental conditions inside thelibrary.St. Lawrence University, Science Center - LEED Gold CertifiedCanton, NYThe project includes undergraduate science classrooms, research labs, faculty andadministrative offices and a student lounge.Harvard University, Library System Information Technology Office and Conserva-tion Laboratory / 90 Mount Auburn Street Office Building - LEED Gold CertifiedCambridge, MAThis project encompasses 20,000 sq ft of office and support space. It accommodatesseveral program groups, including a preservation laboratory for special collections.Boston Medical Center, 670 Albany Street - LEED CertifiedBoston, MATissue culture suites and biohazard Level 3 facilities are included in this $27 million,180,000 sq ft biomedical research facility. Theproject, which will receive LEED Gold certification, includes such sustainable designfeatures as underfloor air distribution, storm water retention, and microturbines withheat recovery. Also included are two 4,500 sq ft data centers, with a 2,700 KW 2NUPS system, a 9,000 KW generator (4+1), and a 500 KW co-generation system.The Lucida - 86th Street and Lexington Avenue - LEED SilverNew York, NYThis 375,000 sq ft residential building includes condominium and rental units aboveretail space.Chicago Spire – LEED GoldChicago, ILChicago Spire will be the tallest building in the United States with a height of 2,000feet and 150 stories. The project will encompass 3 million sq ft of space including1,200 high design level residential condominiums, health/fitness center, spa, restau-rant, business center and parking.Microsoft - LEED CICambridge, MAThis 39,000 sq ft “think tank” space for Microsoft is predominantly open plan andincludes a 2-story space that encompasses approximately 25% of the floor plate.Battery Park City Site 3 - The Visionaire – LEED PlatinumNew York, NYThis 33-story, 500,000 sq ft tower includes 251 condominiums as well as 4,200 sqft of ground floor retail space. It also includes 40,000 sq ft of office space for theheadquarters of the Battery Park City Parks Conservancy, which operates 32 acres ofopen public space at the southern tip of Manhattan. This building is conditioned bya direct gas fired absorption plant. Each apartment is provided with ventilation airthat has been dehumidified and tempered from a central ventilation system with anenthalpy wheel type energy recovery system. This building also employs local powergeneration using photovoltaic panels and a 60 kW micro-turbine.Cosentini Associates

The proj-ect will incorporate an energy efficient HVAC system that will provide superior indoorair quality and occupant comfort.Downtown Jebel Ali, Central Plaza, Zone 1 - LEED GoldDubai, U.A.E.This new mixed use project encompasses 170,000 m2 – approximately 100,000 m2of commercial office space and 70,000 m2 of residential. The 40-story high-rise will also include multiple basement levels.The Stowe Mountain Lodge – LEEDStowe, VTThis new resort is located within the Spruce Peak development at Stowe Mountain. Theresort consists of two new 6-story buildings, with a total of 237 hotel and condomin-ium units. It also includes a spa, restaurant and ballroom, and meeting room spaces.340 on The Park - LEEDChicago, ILThis 61-story luxury condominium encompasses approximately 950,000 sq ft andincludes over 350 units, as well as ground level retail, fitness center, etc. This is thefirst residential project in Chicago to be designed to obtain a LEED rating.University of Michigan, Stephen M. Ross School of Business – LEEDAnn Arbor, MIThis new 270,000 sq ft building includes the Winter Quad, for school gatherings andis surrounded by an auditorium, classrooms, faculty offices, and student services. Thisbuilding uses a high efficiency central plant for heating and cooling. Classrooms areconditioned with an underfloor air distribution system. Passive heating and coolingconcepts were used to develop the winter garden atrium.Battery Park City Site 16/17 - Riverhouse – LEED GoldNew York, NYThis project includes 470,000 sq ft of condominiums, 30,000 sq ft of retail, and35,000 sq ft of parking. Features include filtered air & water, non-emitting carpets &paints, acoustical treatments, triple-layered windows, roof-top gardens and more.Highline Site - LEEDNew York, NYThis new rental residential building on Tenth Avenue between 17th and 18th Streetsis a being built along the 1.5 mile elevated High Line park. Phase II consists of an expansion to the vivarium, dry laboratories,offices and an auditorium.J.W. McCormack Office Building Renovation – LEED SilverBoston, MAThis project renovated the historic, 392,000 sq ft McCormack Post Office and Court-house Building for use as federal office space. This $67 million project entailedrenovated the 22-story building which is on the National Register of Historic Places.One Madison Avenue - LEEDNew York, NYConversion of this historic office building into a 40-story high-end condominium(approximately 93 units, 250,000 sq ft), including two levels of support space belowgrade, restaurant, lobby and private club lobby, and parking for 100 cars.Architect: SLCE ArchitectsArizona State University McAllister Village – LEEDTempe, AZThis new 550,000 sq ft project includes a mix of residential, classroom, dining com-mons, and retail buildings.Cosentini Associates

The program includes six district courtroomsand four magistrate courtrooms. In addition to the District and Magistrate Courts, thebuilding will be occupied by the federal judiciary agencies. A state-of-the-art, flexibleunderfloor air system is planned for the courtrooms.Architect: Moshe Safdie and Associates Inc.Fairfield Metro Center Project - LEED SilverFairfield, CTThis new multi-building mixed-use development encompasses 1.2 million sq ft andincludes four office buildings, a Hilton Hotel, health club, train concourse build-ing and parking. The office buildings are conditioned by an underfloor airdistribution system to provide superior indoor air quality and occupant comfort whilereducing building energy usage.Lexington Commons - LEEDChicago, ILThis 572,000 sq ft project rises 35 stories and includes 297- units, ground level retail,health club and loft-style apartments. Central cooling and heating plants provideservices to interior vertical fan coil units in the project’s residential units; independent,high-efficiency furnace unit are provided in the lofts. The parking garage spanningthe space between the high-rise and loft complex includes a “green roof”.College of New Rochelle - Center for Wellness – LEED SilverNew Rochelle, NYThis $25 million, 60,000 sq ft project includes a 1,800-seat gym, a basement-levelnatatorium and several technologically equipped spaces for conferences, seminarsand classroom instruction in the areas of holistic medicine and healthy living.U.S. Federal Courthouse – LEED SilverSpringfield, MADesign of a new 155,000 sq ft courthouse building, including three US District Court-rooms, one US Magistrate Courtroom, and one Bankruptcy Courtroom, with adjunctfacilities and judges chambers, court support offices such as the clerk of courts, juryassembly, pre trial, probation, the US marshal’s office, the US attorney’s office, etc.Cosentini Associates

Theannex houses administrative offices, seminar rooms, and a servery and dining area.Harvard University, Center for Government and International Studies - LEED EBCambridge, MAThis project includes 200,000 gross sq ft of new construction as well as renovationsto 8,000 gross sq ft at 1727 Cambridge Street. The project includes a comprehen-sive basement renovation, with a new woodshop for the School of Architecture atGund Hall. The building program includes international and area research centersand accommodates a range of academic and administrative uses, including facultyoffices, graduate student work space, classrooms, library and computer facilities, anda café.Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, East Campus Athletic Village - LEEDTroy, NYThis $48 million project of 160,000 sq ft of new athletic facilities space includesoutdoor lighting for athletic fields and seating areas/bleachers, new gymnasiums andcourts, spaces associated with the football stadium (toilets, press box, media/radiobooths, etc.), training center, administrative areas, an equipment area and teamlocker facilities.Harvard University, Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study, Byerly Hall RenovationLEED SilverCambridge, MAThis project entails the renovation of an existing 40,000 sq ft faculty and office build-ing at Radcliffe Institute, a building that was originally opened in 1932 as a physicalsciences building. The building’s exterior and structure will remain intact, while theglazing, interior and MEP/FP system will be completely updated. Program elements include new, state-of-the-art greenhouse and laboratory facilities. A closed loop geothermal system isbeing implemented to provide heating and cooling for the building.Georgetown University, McDonough School of Business - LEEDWashington, DCThis project encompasses approximately 200,000 sq ft of new academic space andapproximately 105,000 sq ft of structured, ventilated parking for 230 cars. Theestimated total construction cost of the project is $48.5 million for the business schoolproject, with an additional $5 million for structured parking.University of Rhode Island, Pell Marine Science Library Oceanographic ExplorationCenter - LEEDNarragansett, RIThis new $15 million 41,000 sq ft facility will serve as the home of the GraduateSchool of Oceanography. The building program includes laboratories and class-rooms for biology, physics, chemistry, geology, geophysics and archaeology of theocean, as well as an electronic classroom, a map room, administrative areas and awireless computer network. The facility will implement a satellite and web based sys-tem to allow students and scientists to take part in ocean research expeditions withoutleaving campus.Hayward Place Residential Development - LEEDBoston, MAThis project encompasses 473,000 gross sq ft, including 195 residential units andpenthouse suites, a fitness center, an atrium, shell and core spaces for future retailand restaurants, and structured ventilated parking for 200 cars utilizing mechanicalparking stackers.EF Education Headquarters– LEED EBCambridge, MAFull MEP engineering (both base building and fit-out) for this 150,000 sq ft U.S.headquarters of a European- company. LEED/Sustainable Design ProjectsAdditional Sustainable Design Project ExperienceThe following projects incorporate many sustainable design technologies; they werecompleted prior to the U.S. Green Building’s development of the LEED Program.Four Times SquareNew York, NYFour Times Square g rises 48 stories above its location on the northeast corner ofBroadway and 42nd Street, and encompasses over 1.6 million square feet of specula-tive office space. This was the first commercial high-rise office building in the countryto incorporate sustainable design technologies.Merck and Company, Inc.West Point, PAThis project encompasses over 500,000 sq ft of open and closed offices and includesa cafeteria, kitchen, fitness center, credit union, photography laboratory, exhibitionspace, computer areas and parking. The facility uses campus steam and chilledwater provided by a cogeneration system and steam chillers. An indoor air qualityassessment project reviewed all materials, components and systems for complianceto environmental standards. Extensive air quality testing was conducted during bothconstruction and occupancy to insure that building occupants were not exposed toindoor pollutants. The building’s HVAC system employs factory-built variable air vol-ume air handling units designed for long life, high performance and quiet operation.Boehringer IngelheimRidgefield, CTThe HVAC systems in tis 300,000 sq ft headquarters use campus high temperaturehot water and chilled water from the central plant. Studies of systems, materials,building orientation, envelope, etc. resulted in efficient all air systems served frommultiple central VAV air handling units with variable speed fans. Highly efficientlighting and control systems allow for individual automated switching and variablelight levels. Interior finishes, insulation carpets, paints, etc. were carefully selected topromote high indoor air quality standards.Arrow InternationalReading, PAThe office portion of this 150,000 sq ft headquarters and manufacturing facility isheated and cooled by a closed loop (water) ground source heat pump system. Incre-mental water source heat pumps supply conditioned air zone to both perimeter andinterior thermal zones and are of the extended range type capable of operating withwater temperature ranging between 42ºF and 95ºF.Cosentini Associates

LEED/Sustainable Design ProjectsBausch & Lomb World HeadquartersRochester, NYHVAC systems for this 460,000 sq ft headquarters use the local district heatingsystem for space heating and humidification. Non-CFC electric chillers provide lowtemperature air by means of floor by floor, variable air volume AC units and ceilingfan-powered mixing boxes. Space heating is accomplished initially by use of ceilingplenum waste heat from lights and equipment before district steam is used to gener-ate hot water for heating. A full direct digital energy management system optimizesenergy use and lighting. Energy studies and utility rebate programs were developedin cooperation with local utility companies to maximize energy conservation.Duracell World HeadquartersBethel, CTThe building systems for this 308,000 sq ft headquarters were designed for maximumenergy efficiency and environmental comfort. Technologies in the facility includeground source heat pumps or gas air-conditioning; high window, wall and roof “R”values (Glass “R” Value - 4.5); humidification in winter; high efficiency lighting, day-lighting and controls; high efficiency pumps, fans, motors and use of variable speeddrives; heat recovery, etc. In addition, the facility contains no fiberglass or CFC’s.National Rural Electric CooperativeArlington, VAThis 275,000 sq ft headquarters uses an ice storage system to supply over 50% ofpeak summer cooling loads and over 60-70% of seasonal cooling requirementsice making. Chillers use Non-CFC refrigerants and air handling systems use 100%outside air for “free” cooling in winter. Ice is made off-peak and ice systems shift largeamounts of electricity off-peak. Extensive life cycle studies determined the final selec-tion of HVAC systems. A low temperature air distribution system was used to reducethe size of fans, pumps, ductwork and piping and to minimize energy consumption.Science City at Union StationKansas City, MOThis 800,000 sq ft interactive science museum is to be located within Kansas City’shistoric Union Station. Engineering this facility has required the exploration of allaspects of sustainable design including fuel cells, passive cooling, heat recovery, useof recycled materials, gray water systems, etc.ICA ImmobilarioMexico City, MexicoThis 40,000 sq meter headquarters has 100% raised floor air distribution in the officeareas. A special theater in the building incorporates displacement ventilation, heatrecovery and special lighting techniques including studies of light shelves, etc.Cosentini Associates
