This document presents a collection of quotes from 1703 to 1985 commenting on students' dependence on various writing and calculating technologies of the time, from slate to paper to pens to calculators. Each new technology was criticized for distracting students from traditional methods and creating reliance rather than self-sufficiency. However, the concluding statement notes that new technologies will always be adopted and that complaints about changes are inevitable.
