There has been significant research on computer-mediated communication over the last decade, mainly focusing on how it can enhance learning and improve communication. Learning within incoherent structures:
the space of online discussion forums

Abstract Online discussion forums are an increasingly common use of
new information and communication technologies in education. As a tool
for promoting conversational modes of learning, it has been suggested that
online discussion forums can lead to enhanced learning outcomes for
students. However, there is a need to explore further the implications of
the highly mediated nature of computer–based interaction on student
learning within these virtual learning environments. This paper presents
results from a detailed study of students’ learning outcomes and patterns
of interaction within an online discussion forum. The findings suggest that
the typical nonlinear branching structure of online discussion may be
insufficient for the realisation of truly conversational modes of learning.
The paper discusses the implications of these findings in relation to
students’ learning.

Introduction
Communication, rather than individual knowledge acquisition, has recently been
emphasised as a means to increase the quality of instruction. However, as we move
towards increasing use of information and communication technologies as a means
of supporting student learning, it is necessary to evaluate the discontinuities between
the structure of familiar conversation and asynchronous text-based communication.
Contemporary explorations of the role of internal and interactive dialogue in
students’ construction of knowledge have lead to the development of a
conversational model of learning (Laurillard, 1993; 1999). Enhanced learning
outcomes such as increased motivation and engagement in the learning task, deeper
levels of understanding, increased metacognition, the development of higher-order
thinking skills and divergent thinking have been shown to result from the adoption of
conversational modes of learning (Blumenfeld et al., 1996; Flynn & La Faso, 1972).
The development of new information and communication technologies has in turn
offered new means by which conversational modes of learning can be achieved. As
Harasim (1990) has suggested, the introduction of online education may open
unprecedented opportunities for educational interactivity. Similarly, it has been
argued that information and communication technologies offer new forum in which

The purpose of this study was to ascertain the extent to which Accounting lecturers use ICT in the teaching of Accounting in tertiary institutions in Rivers State. Three research questions were used to obtain relevant responses needed for the study; accordingly, three hypotheses were also formulated. The research design was the descriptive survey design and the sample size was seventy (70) Accounting lecturers that exist in the five tertiary institutions used for the study. The instrument used was Information and Communication Technology Teaching Accounting of Accounting Questionnaire (ICTTAAQ) made up of three major parts; A: Demographics; B (three sections) addressing relevant research questions. The ICTTAAQ met both validity and reliability criteria. The study revealed among other things that Accounting lecturers do not make enough use of Accounting software in the teaching of Accounting. Consequently, the three research hypotheses that guided the study were also rejected. The study recommended that based on the role ICT and Accounting software in the improvement of teaching of Accounting, Management of tertiary institutions should provide ICT tools and accounting libraries, and where they are available, Accounting lecturers should utilize them properly to enhance professional competence.

The technology has done tremendous things on our society today particularly in the field of education. In medieval times, books were rare and only an elite few had access to educational opportunities. Today, massive amounts of books, audio, images, and videos, are available at one’s fingertips, the opportunities for formal learning are available online worldwide, access to learning opportunities today is unprecedented in scope thanks to technology, So, It has to be understood that the schooling system has been positively impacted as both students and teachers are now able to perform their task efficiently (Collins, 2013). The using technology is becoming a universal medium and source for most of the information that flows through eyes, will be facilitate the process of education on widely and availability of computers in schools these days has enabled students and teachers have unlimited access to many categories of education. The advances in the technology are very helpful in distance learning and transforming the way people are educated.
I think the technology has helped a lot in raising the understanding level of students and improving education in many ways, it is good tool in building interest in studies as a result students' attendance is increased in institutions which availing technology education. "Technology can give teachers and students great resources, new opportunities for learning, ways to collaborate and create, and save money. Technology is a very powerful tool for education" (David Andrade, 2009). - 1. TECHNOLOGY AND COMMUNICATION There has been a great deal of research in the area of computer-mediated communication over the last decade. The majority of published research focuses on the ways in which such communication can enhance learning and provide new and improved forms of communication It is often assumed that Information and Communication Technologies can offer new and improved means of inter-personal communication. Currently, there is also great enthusiasm for the possible application of these new technologies in Higher Education. However, the possible impacts of technology on students' interaction must be addressed. This paper reports on critical evaluations of on-line discussion forums, and provides a detailed analysis of students' on-line communication. It is demonstrated that there are limits to the efficacy of current technologies in supporting collaborative and communicative models of learning. Recommendations are given as to the role of on-line discussion forums in our teaching and learning, and it is suggested that we must be aware of the limitations of technology-mediated discussions.
