CHAPTER 1
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
Introduction
We live in the modern world where technology has advanced rapidly, where it now appears to
be a part of nearly everyone's daily existence. Numerous elements of online platforms,
especially those that students utilize for academic purposes, are getting better as technology
develops. The advancement of technology is sparking other developers to develop an app that
is useful for people such as an "E-Library" or "Electronic Library." According to Pearson (2022)
Due to physical restraints, traditional libraries lacked the flexibility to include a diverse range of
content. On the other hand, digital libraries are able to keep the books alive by also broadening
the availability of the content online. It stores a wide range of content in a virtual environment in
the form of e-books, PDFs, podcasts, and videos that can be updated and modified according to
the user’s needs. Unlike traditional libraries, which have physical constraints, e-libraries can be
stored online on a cloud, drive, or hardware.
One of the things we're looking at is the library in the other dimensions, which we find can be
accessible online as technology is now widely used. Students find electronics spectacular so
then they find what is the best thing to do with an application to store almost complete lessons.
We discovered that the E-Library is full of educational resources that students may require to
browse or cite their key teachings. In fact, this enables students to fulfill their potential to exceed
their study.
Background of the study
Over the past years, Technology has drastically improving and seemingly common for the daily
lives of almost all people. In fact you could even pay through online via Gcash. The mobile
wallet company GCash had an average of 60 million users as of March 2022, accounting for
about 83% of the adult population in the Philippines (Statista Research Department, 2022). Due
to the advancement of technology, it's spark the other developer to develop an app that is useful
for people. Such as E-library or "Electronic Library". Some research indicates that some people
have problems accessing e-library caused by slow internet, power outage and lack of e-
resources information they needs (Abdulahi Isah ;2010). E-library defined (Deb, Kar, and Kumar
,2003) as a system that is accessible from anywhere via the Internet, to deliver knowledge
directly to their users, without being confined to the
contents neither of a physical library nor by being caught in a web of unorganized, unmanaged
information.

3. According to the study of (Issa, Blessing, Daura; 2009) states that students are aware of the E-
library resources but lack the information literacy skills to use them.
According to Taylor and Francis (2013)
pointed out areas in which improvement and innovation are needed to facilitate access to and
retrieval of e-library resources.
In the Philippines, when the Covid-19 hits in year of 2022, many of the institutions started
offering free E-library services for public use. Gatchalian who also the head of the Philippines’
Senate Committee on Basic Education cited (World Bank report, 2021) revealed that when
remote learning was deployed during the epidemic, 95.5% of low-income households used
paper-based learning modules and resources. As regard to the issue. By Technological
Innovation, the purpose of this study is to determine the usability of E-library as repository of
learning materials for SHS students in Learn and Explore Montessori School .
Theoretical Framework
The study of Library 2.0 Theory: Web 2.0 and Its Implications for Libraries by Jack M. Maness
(2006) establishes that the history of libraries would change, the online library would be easily
accessible and interactive, and the library collection would continue to evolve in this electronic
medium.
This study is anchored on the Investigation of User Perceptions and Behavioral Intentions
Toward the E-Library of Hanho Jeong (2011), which found that the perceived usefulness and
usability of e-libraries, as well as their characteristics and quality system. This survey shows the
rates of the people who use the e-library system and whether or not they have any trouble using
it.
This study is supported by the theory of the Role of Self-Efficacy in e-library usage among
students. Bushra Aafaqi (2004). e-libraries are among the simplest ways for students to do their
schoolwork. Educational institutions realize that it is important for students to use e-librabries as
a source.
Conceptual framework
The major concept of this study is focused in the Usability of e-library as repository of learning
materials for SHS students at Learn and Explore Montessori School Academic year 2022-2023.
The system approach (Input, Output and Process) are uses in describing the conceptual
framework of the study. As shown in figure, The input variables consist of students demographic
profile and the usability of e-library as described of respondents. While the process consist of
data collection through google form and questionnaire. And output variables consist of an
analysis and improvement of e-library as repository of learning materials to shs students .

4. Statement of the Problem
This study aims to determine the usability of E-library
as a repository of learning materials to SHS Students of LEMS.
Specifically, it aims to answer the following research questions:
1. what are the demographic profile of the students when it comes to:

1.2 Internet connectivity
2. What is the usability of e-library as described by the respondents in terms of:
2.1 Ease of use
2.2 Functionality
2.3 Compatibility
2.4 Informative
3.Is there a significant difference between the usability of e-library to respondent when grouped
according to profile?
Hypothesis
Ho 1:The e-library is not usable as repository of learning materials to SHS students as they
describe of.
Ho 2:There is no significant difference between the usability of e-library as a repository to
respondents when grouped according to profile.
Significance of the study
This study is focused to determine the usability of E-Library as a repository of learning material
for SHS students of LEMS. This research aims to prove that the E-Library is efficient for all SHS
students. This research can also help school administrators, future researchers, and who are
interested in this topic.

5. This study is conducted to benefit the following:
TEACHERS. The results of this study will offer the teachers, particularly SHS teachers empirical
information on the usability of E-Library as a repository of learning material for SHS students of
LEMS. It’s access to the teachers to be able to gain knowledge and information to meet the
quality of education.
STUDENTS. This study may serve as a guide for those who are using E-Library, especially for
those students of SHS in LEMS.
FUTURE RESEARCHERS. This research will serve as a base for future researchers on
improving the usability of E-Library as a repository. It can lead to efficiency and ease of use of
learning materials for SHS students.
SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS. This study provides better strategies and instructions toward
effective learning through E-library.
Scope and Delimitation
This study is a descriptive research determining the usability of e-library as a repository learning
materials of 250 male and female of SHS Students in Learn and Explore Montessori School Inc.
in the first semester of the academic year. 2022-2023
Furthermore the study delimits itself to Usability of e-library and ease of use on SHS Students of
LEMS and will not attempt in other schools.
The study should be conducted using questionnaires given to the students as a survey
reference that are prepared by the researchers.
Definition of terms
Usability-It refers to how easy it is to use learning sites,using technology and the internet.
Repository-A digital repository is an online archive for the storage of digital objects; these can
range from digital archives, moving or still image galleries, manuscripts, anything that is in
electronic format and needs a place to be stored either in the short or longer term.
Learning materials- It refers to any academic materials like video presentation, modules,and
powerpoint presentation that students, teachers, and parents can use for learning.
E-library-(Digital Library; E-Library) A set of documents available through electronic means by
the use of digital technologies that allow for the retrieval, archiving, preservation, and
dissemination of those documents (Cf. Grand dictionnaire terminologique).

6. Internet- An electronic communications network that connects computer networks and
organizational computer facilities around the world —used with the except when being used
attributively (Merriam Webster,1968).
Technology - It refers to the application or devices that students use to learn.
E-Resources- refers to the knowledge received through schooling or instruction and to the
institution of teaching as a whole.
Technology Innovation - new or improved product or process whose technological
characteristics are significantly different from before.
