Japanese circumstances
• DSF (Dispersion Shift Fiber): A type of single mode
optical fiber with a zero dispersion wavelength in
the 1,550 nm band where the transmission loss is
smaller than the 1,310 nm band. It is suitable for
long distance transmission.
• This is Japan specific requirement so it is hard to
deploy for non local vender
• In digital coherent, adaptive dispersion
compensation by digital filter by DSP becomes
possible, adaptively compensating delay
characteristics due to polarization mode dispersion
and chromatic dispersion of optical fiber, which is a
problem in ultra high speed signal transmission
Distance limitation by these linear distortion
characteristics can dramatically improve
• That is, it does not matter even in the DSF section
