What is Motion Capture?
Motion Capture is the process of
recording a movement of objects,
animals or people however when
used for video games, Motion
Capture is defined as the recording
of human actions to be used to
animate digital character models in
2D or 3D computer animation.

Rotoscoping
Rotoscoping is perhaps the first form of Motion Capture and was invented
by a man named Max Fleischer. It was an attempt to give computer
characters realistic and fluid movements. Rotoscoping was done by
filming a movement and then drawing over the video frame by frame to
create an animation. Rotoscoping was used in the 1937 production of
Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs.

Cost
One of the biggest issues with MC is the cost. It is easy to see why it is so
expensive, studio’s need to purchase the studio, actors, motion capture suits,
recording equipment, props and not to mention the computers for the data.
Motion capture is quickly becoming one of the most popular areas of
animated film and so costs are rising, meaning that smaller studio’s find it
harder to purchase them and as a result they are behind the times with their
animation compared the larger studios.

Dawn of The Planet of the Apes
One difficulty with motion capture is that until recently films had to be shot in a studio, until now.
Dawn of The Planet of the Apes changed all that. The film is set to be released in July 2014. The
story focuses around a group of incredibly intelligent and angry apes who ravage an already post
apocalyptic San Francisco and is a sequel to the 2011 film, Rise of The Planet of the Apes. The
improvements in mo-cap technology since 2011 are impressive with the apes actor’s performances
now being even more accurate. The film uses advanced mo-cap technology in order for the reflective
markers to be viewed by the camera in daylight, this was a major breakthrough, as well as this they
made it possible to shoot up to six motion capture actors on location rather than in a studio which
was a first for mo-cap history.

Markerless Motion Capture
Markerless MC is the newest form of motion capture technology. It uses advanced capture
systems and computer vision technology to identify and track subjects without the need for
any special suits of markers. To accomplish this, advanced algorithms are required. This
technology is available at leading university’s throughout the world and currently Organic
Motion’s is the only commercially available professional MMCS on the market. The MMCS is
great because there are no suits or markers needed. The equipment can be hired and actors
simply have to step into the capture space to begin tracking, this means that animators and
developers can capture more accurate motion data in less time and for a much lower cost.
