Apple. Can its hot streak last?
FORTUNE -- To understand how Samsung -- yes, Samsung -- became America's No. 1 mobile
phonemaker and thorn in Apple's side, it's helpful to rewind to last fall. On a mid-September
morning, Apple (AAPL) CEO Tim Cook stepped onto a stage in San Francisco to unveil the
iPhone 5. Several hundred miles away, in a Wolfgang Puck restaurant in Los Angeles, a group of
marketing executives from Samsung Electronics followed real-time reactions to Cook's remarks.
They huddled around tables mounted with laptops and TV screens, carefully tracking each new
feature and monitoring the gush of online comments on the new device via blogs and social
media sites. As the data flowed in, writers from the company's advertising agency, who were
also camped out in the restaurant turned war room, scrambled to craft a response.
Two hours later, when Cook stepped off the stage, the Samsung group was already drafting a
series of print, digital, and TV ads. The following week -- as the iPhone 5 went on sale -- the
company aired a TV ad mocking Apple "fanboys" queuing up for the new phone. ("The
headphone jack is going to be on the bottom!") The 90-second commercial went on to become
the most popular tech ad of 2012, garnering more than 70 million views online. More important,
in the weeks following the launch of Apple's iPhone 5, Samsung sold a record-breaking number
of its own signature smartphone, the Galaxy S III. "We knew this was going to be a big moment
in time, when consumers are really paying attention," says Todd Pendleton, chief marketing
officer of Samsung's U.S.-based mobile division. "We wanted to take that opportunity and all
that energy and make it Samsung's moment."
No doubt about it, Samsung is having a moment. In recent years the South Korean company has
taken the mobile world -- the U.S. included -- by storm. Last year it overtook longtime leader
Nokia to become the No. 1 player in cellphones, with 29% market share worldwide. In
smartphones, those high-end devices with advanced computing power, Samsung is also No. 1
globally and in a dead heat with Apple in the U.S.: Most analysts show Apple with a slight edge
in smartphone sales, while one outfit, ABI Research, says Samsung's share of smartphone
shipments topped 33%, compared with Apple's 30%. (To be sure, Apple sells one device, the
iPhone, while Samsung offers 25 unique smartphones in the U.S.) "Samsung is on fire," says
John Legere, CEO of mobile operator T-Mobile USA.
Chalk up Samsung's success to a combination of marketing swagger, innovation, operational
prowess, and a marketplace hungry for an alternative to the iPhone. Although Samsung wasn't

Google acquired Motorola Mobility for $12.5 billion, its largest acquisition to date. The deal will give Google a major presence in the smartphone hardware business in addition to gaining Motorola's large patent portfolio. International Merger Acquisition Failure
The general expectation in mergers and acquisitions is that the firm’s shareholder value post mergers or acquisitions would be greater compared to the total shareholder value of the parent companies before the process is completed. Similarly, the parent companies, especially the smaller and weaker one, would tremendously benefit due to an enhanced market share, competitiveness, and cost-efficiencies. Some of the most ideal situation when mergers and acquisitions are appropriate includes when companies wish to introduce new products, avail some administrative benefits, and enter a new market. Although there are many business and companies such as Time Warner, Google, Microsoft, eBay, BMW, etc. who have been successful in mergers and acquisitions, some have never been so lucky because their process have often ended in failure.
The acquisition of Motorola by Google in 2012 is amongst the worst in the history of merger and acquisition. Google obtained Motorola for $12.5 billion with the aim of using the brand to build top-quality mobile devices because Google’s Android OS had already started off with a massive market share (Epstein, 2014). Motorola however broke the promise by releasing a variety of low-quality mobile devices. They even failed to upgrade the old phones to the latest Android OS for the consumers. To further worsen the matter, Google continued to release mobile devices called Nexus, which, were produced under the partnership with LG, Asus, and Samsung. The implication for such a partnership is that it led to the wearing away of the Motorola acquisition’s value even further. Then, the shocker came when Google had to offload its $12.5 billion purchase for about $2.9 billion to Lenovo two years after the acquisition.
The offload was necessary although Motorola’s Moto X had at one point shown positive performance in the market. The sale covered Motorola’s deferred tax assets, handset division, cash on hand, home business, amongst other things (Epstein, 2014). However, Google still retained Motorola’s patent portfolio after the sale. The biggest mistake that Google made, regardless of the fact that it was faced with a critical dilemma, was to buy Motorola in order to save Google’s Android OS. The move was unprecedented because it is very few companies that trade in software which [have ever successfully] shifted to hardware. Secondly, the new acquisition meant that Google had to compete with its software clients such as HTC and Samsung which are also known to offer top-notch Android-based tablets and mobile phones.
Third, Android software are not primarily meant to generate much money. Hence, by investing in the new merger, Google had only dreamt of holding o.

Google agreed to acquire Motorola Mobility for $12.5 billion in order to strengthen the ties between Android's hardware and software. The deal would give Google ownership of Motorola's 17,000 patents and 7,500 patent applications related to mobile technology. The acquisition aims to better position Google to compete with Apple by making it the owner of both the Android software and Motorola hardware, while still maintaining Android as an open platform for other manufacturers.

International Merger Acquisition Failure
The general expectation in mergers and acquisitions is that the firm’s shareholder value post mergers or acquisitions would be greater compared to the total shareholder value of the parent companies before the process is completed. Similarly, the parent companies, especially the smaller and weaker one, would tremendously benefit due to an enhanced market share, competitiveness, and cost-efficiencies. Some of the most ideal situation when mergers and acquisitions are appropriate includes when companies wish to introduce new products, avail some administrative benefits, and enter a new market. Although there are many business and companies such as Time Warner, Google, Microsoft, eBay, BMW, etc. who have been successful in mergers and acquisitions, some have never been so lucky because their process have often ended in failure.
The acquisition of Motorola by Google in 2012 is amongst the worst in the history of merger and acquisition. Google obtained Motorola for $12.5 billion with the aim of using the brand to build top-quality mobile devices because Google’s Android OS had already started off with a massive market share (Epstein, 2014). Motorola however broke the promise by releasing a variety of low-quality mobile devices. They even failed to upgrade the old phones to the latest Android OS for the consumers. To further worsen the matter, Google continued to release mobile devices called Nexus, which, were produced under the partnership with LG, Asus, and Samsung. The implication for such a partnership is that it led to the wearing away of the Motorola acquisition’s value even further. Then, the shocker came when Google had to offload its $12.5 billion purchase for about $2.9 billion to Lenovo two years after the acquisition.
The offload was necessary although Motorola’s Moto X had at one point shown positive performance in the market. The sale covered Motorola’s deferred tax assets, handset division, cash on hand, home business, amongst other things (Epstein, 2014). However, Google still retained Motorola’s patent portfolio after the sale. The biggest mistake that Google made, regardless of the fact that it was faced with a critical dilemma, was to buy Motorola in order to save Google’s Android OS. The move was unprecedented because it is very few companies that trade in software which [have ever successfully] shifted to hardware. Secondly, the new acquisition meant that Google had to compete with its software clients such as HTC and Samsung which are also known to offer top-notch Android-based tablets and mobile phones.
Third, Android software are not primarily meant to generate much money. Hence, by investing in the new merger, Google had only dreamt of holding o.
Google motorola mobility final
Google agreed to acquire Motorola Mobility for $12.5 billion in order to strengthen the ties between Android's hardware and software. The deal would give Google ownership of Motorola's 17,000 patents and 7,500 patent applications related to mobile technology. The acquisition aims to better position Google to compete with Apple by making it the owner of both the Android software and Motorola hardware, while still maintaining Android as an open platform for other manufacturers.

zkStudyClub - LatticeFold: A Lattice-based Folding Scheme and its Application...
Folding is a recent technique for building efficient recursive SNARKs. Several elegant folding protocols have been proposed, such as Nova, Supernova, Hypernova, Protostar, and others. However, all of them rely on an additively homomorphic commitment scheme based on discrete log, and are therefore not post-quantum secure. In this work we present LatticeFold, the first lattice-based folding protocol based on the Module SIS problem. This folding protocol naturally leads to an efficient recursive lattice-based SNARK and an efficient PCD scheme. LatticeFold supports folding low-degree relations, such as R1CS, as well as high-degree relations, such as CCS. The key challenge is to construct a secure folding protocol that works with the Ajtai commitment scheme. The difficulty, is ensuring that extracted witnesses are low norm through many rounds of folding. We present a novel technique using the sumcheck protocol to ensure that extracted witnesses are always low norm no matter how many rounds of folding are used. Our evaluation of the final proof system suggests that it is as performant as Hypernova, while providing post-quantum security.

How information systems are built or acquired puts information, which is what they should be about, in a secondary place. Our language adapted accordingly, and we no longer talk about information systems but applications. Applications evolved in a way to break data into diverse fragments, tightly coupled with applications and expensive to integrate. Dandelion Hashtable: beyond billion requests per second on a commodity server
This slide deck presents DLHT, a concurrent in-memory hashtable. Despite efforts to optimize hashtables, that go as far as sacrificing core functionality, state-of-the-art designs still incur multiple memory accesses per request and block request processing in three cases. First, most hashtables block while waiting for data to be retrieved from memory. Second, open-addressing designs, which represent the current state-of-the-art, either cannot free index slots on deletes or must block all requests to do so. Third, index resizes block every request until all objects are copied to the new index. Defying folklore wisdom, DLHT forgoes open-addressing and adopts a fully-featured and memory-aware closed-addressing design based on bounded cache-line-chaining. This design offers lock-free index operations and deletes that free slots instantly, (2) completes most requests with a single memory access, (3) utilizes software prefetching to hide memory latencies, and (4) employs a novel non-blocking and parallel resizing.
