These slides use concepts from my (Jeff Funk) course entitled analyzing hi-tech opportunities to show how in improvements in printed electronics, wireless telecom, and the Internet are enabling the greater use of smart logistics. Logistics now represents 10% of global GDP thus representing a large percentage of expenditures. Improvements in printed electronics enables cheaper and better RFID tags and smart packaging; the latter can be accessed by logistic companies and consumers. All of this enables better monitoring of products throughout their journey to the marketplace, on ships, in warehouses, and in retail outlets. It also enables customers to more easily find products in retail outlets and for robots to find products in warehouses.

Towards Unified and Native Enrichment in Event Processing SystemsEdward Curry
Events are encapsulated pieces of information that flow from one event agent to another. In order to process an event, additional information that is external to the event is often needed. This is achieved using a process called event enrichment. Current approaches to event enrichment are external to event processing engines and are handled by specialized agents. Within large-scale environments with high heterogeneity among events, the enrichment process may become difficult to maintain. This paper examines event enrichment in terms of information completeness and presents a unified model for event enrichment that takes place natively within the event processing engine. The paper describes the requirements of event enrichment and highlights its challenges such as finding enrichment sources, retrieval of information items, finding complementary information and its fusion with events. It then details an instantiation of the model using Semantic Web and Linked Data technologies. Enrichment is realised by dynamically guiding a spreading activation algorithm in a Linked Data graph. Multiple spreading activation strategies have been evaluated on a set of Wikipedia events and experimentation shows the viability of the approach.

Abstract— The computing industry has been a significant contributor to global warming ever since its
inception. Performance maximization per unit has cost remained the prime focus of academic and industrial
research alike, ignoring environmental impacts in the process if any. However, the infamous global energy
crisis has inevitably pushed power and energy management up the priority list of computing design and
management activities for purely economic reasons today. Green IT lays emphasis on including the
dimensions of environmental sustainability, the offsets of energy efficiency, and the total cost of
disposal and recycling. A green computing initiative must be adaptive and flexible enough to be
able to address problems that keep on increasing in size and complexity with time. Cloud computing concepts
can invariably be applied to reduce e-waste generation. The service oriented architecture lends itself to
incorporating green computing as a process rather than a product. Re-usability, extensibility and flexibility
are some of the key characteristics which are inherent to the cloud and directly help address the vertical
specific challenges to reducing energy consumption in the long run.

What began as tiny baby steps to bridge gaps of human limitations like memory, cognitive fluctuations has today turned into a virtual revolution where an invisible world of 0’s and 1’s is home to the most important bytes and pieces of our lives. Replacing the need for local servers, cloud computing emerged as the matrix within which multiple remote servers coordinated together to store, manage and administer data. The two other baits in the cloud computing movement is the live/real-time information updating and light-speed transfer of data. Initially, it was the center for large-scale corporations. In the last few years, small-scale and medium-sized organizations have also joined the army of cloud computing era. The analytics of the cloud computing culture swing between the spectrums ranging from the sustainability of cloud computing to the increased carbon emissions due to servers.

5. Fuel-cell Revolution
Across industries, organisations are looking at
how new technologies can support their journey
to Net Carbon Zero.
Data Centers are notoriously hungry for power,
with the largest facilities using over 100
megawatts. Keeping the servers running (and
cool) in the event of a power-cut is a critical
challenge.
Microsoft is launching a demonstration project
in Washington State, which will test the viability
of hydrogen fuel cells for sustainable backup
power, replacing the traditional emissions-heavy
diesel generators.
The project aims to demonstrate that the
hydrogen fuel cell system can provide 1.5MW of
backup power to meet or exceed expectations
set by current diesel engine systems.

DHL Express are trialing cross-border delivery of
Apple products using a hydrogen-powered
truck.
The vehicle, which runs the route between Breda
in the Netherlands and Brussels in Belgium, has
a fuel cell range extender that allows it to travel
around 200km each day. During the pilot, DHL
expects the new technology will save up to 350
tons of CO2 .
The impact of fleet decarbonization on business
operations is starting to become apparent.
Whilst the constrained range and refueling
options of hydrogen and battery electric
vehicles will require operational adjustments for
logistics providers, the greater impact will be the
infrastructure required at depots.
Ensuring the availability of sufficient power to
meet demand of high-capacity rapid chargers
from an already constrained electricity grid is
likely to require a blend of on-site generation,
storage and network upgrades. Similarly, the
space requirement for on-site hydrogen storage
may be significant.

Organizations collect increasing volumes of data from
buildings systems but fail to collate it in a structured
manner. This prevents inter-operability and limits
scalability.
Researchers from the academic community recently
initiated Brick – an open-source ontology for representing
metadata in buildings.
The Brick Schema is extendable and flexible, allowing
data to be consistently structured across buildings,
objects and data sources.
It provides a comprehensive, flexible and expressive way
to understand and manage building data, enabling
advanced data analytics to provide tangible insight and
identify effective interventions.

Safety in Cyber
According to the 2020 Global Threat Intelligence Report,
the tech sector was the most attacked industry in 2019,
accounting for 25% of all attacks, compared to 17% the
previous year.
It’s estimated that the WannaCry ransomware attack in
May 2017 affected more than 200,000 computers across
150 countries. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing
Company (TSMC)—the world's largest makers of
semiconductors and processors — was forced to shut
down several of its chip-fabrication factories after being
hit by a variant of the virus.

has delivered a district heating system that supplies warm
water to a school, plant nursery and swimming pool.
Developing the Aalsmeer Energy Hub was an important way
to demonstrate value to the municipality more widely.
In fact, to get planning permission, cities are now asking data
center providers ”what can you do for me?”. In Switzerland,
GIB-Services have also heated a swimming pool from the
wasted heat of their underground facility, and in Finland, a
similar system will provide heating for up to 4,000 homes.
