The number of AIDS cases rose steadily throughout 1982, mostly affecting the gay community. Reports from the CDC in December 1982 announced the first case of AIDS in a child who received a blood transfusion, and cases in infants born to IV drug users. In May 1983, the Department of Health and Human Services declared AIDS the top medical priority but finding effective treatments was expected to take years. By June 1989, over 106,000 AIDS cases had been reported in the US with 61,000 deaths, though treatments were improving and public acceptance of both the disease and homosexuality was increasing.
