Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software Fuzzing
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

- 2. Introduction to Web 2.0 Tools We researched and reviewed 3 different tools Wikisend Instant Conference Big Marker
- 3. Wikisend is a file sharing service. It shows a welcoming, colorful interface.However, looks can be deceiving. Compared to other services we have used, it seems slow and tedious.
- 4. Instant Conference is a conference call solution. It offers 4 plan choices, from free to $49.95 a month. Registration was easy and upgrading to another plan is very accessible. Various options are offered, including recording, Outlook scheduling and easy to view web directions.
- 5. Big Marker is a web conference site. Similar to Blackboard, video and desktops can be shared. Conferences can be recorded. Participants can raise their hands or point at an item in the presentation. Big Marker even translates to a foreign language during the conference.
- 6. Additional Features Selling seats to your conference. In addition to using it as a business meeting, Big Marker allows a presenter to sell seats. This works well for training and marketing presentations. Your fans can even “follow” you to know when the next conference will occur.
- 7. What do we not like? Not beneficial to education: Wikisend Limited number of file transmissions (uploads & downloads; files deleted after a certain period of time) Other programs more useful (GoogleDocs, MediaFire, etc.) Instant Conference Although easy to use it is better suited to business platforms High cost factor not always attainable for schools
- 8. What do we like? Big Marker Allows conference attendance without travel Lectures are easily integrated for non-traditional learning styles Interactive features (discussion boards, real time discussions, etc.)
- 9. Conclusion Overall, we could see Big Marker being utilized in schools as a training tool for teachers and staff in addition to providing alternative distance learning courses to students. Wikisend is not inclusive enough and comes with limitations. Instant Conference is not feasible for schools on budget constraints.
