 The bilingual schools implemented a policy
that are used in other countries in teaching
and learning of foreign language
 Is necessary take into account some aspects
like:
- Consider formalized learning of the foreign
language quite later than preschool
 The success of this learning depends on the
real needs or wish to use the new
language(s) in authentic communications
(Snow, 2007)
- Language is always the representation,
transmission, and purposeful use of meaning in
communication among interlocutors or writers
and readers
 The curriculum of the bilingual school was
developed between English and Spanish
teachers chosen by the school
- goal: Designing some situed for the real
communicative contexts in which their
students moved in their lives
- Characteristics:
- it applies constructivist principles of human
learning
- Due to the free use of Spanish to help
children learn english
- Three contexts
- daily communication
- communication through the mass media
- the communication necessary when
approaching knowledge in different academic
disciplines
 This research was carry out in a private school
in a mid- sized Colombian city with children of
kindergarten.
 The main concern is how to create a curriculum
that integrates the use of English and Spanish
(bilingual program) in the classroom using
authentic performances in which the students
could integrate their interest, lives and contexts
with the use of a L2.
 Mixed research
- Qualitative research objective.
- Qualitative and quantitative data
collection.
- Quantitative and qualitative analysis.
 Groups: Two kindergartens' of 25 students.
 Ages: 6-7 years old
 Teachers:
 Professional in International
business
 Professional in Children’s Education
and psychology
The impact of the curriculum on the first and foreign
language development of the students.
Learning of
English of
the yougest

What communicative
performances did
teachers carry out in
English with kindergarten
students and how was
authenticity achieved in
them?
How did the
implementation of the
curriculum based on
authentic performances
influence the children’s
attitude towards the
English class?
How did the curriculum
based on authentic
performances influence
the children’s learning of
English?
 Data collections: The researches used different
instruments to collect the information.
› Semi-structured interviews conducted with the
teachers of English and Spanish.
› Videos of all the classes they taught.
› Two videos that the teachers made where the
students were making a performance in another
class.
› Observations
› Grades
 Data analysis and techniques: The researcher
used the following steps
1) The researchers transcribed all the
videos that they took in the classroom.
2) They analyzed the transcriptions,
looking for specific information to answer
the research question.
3) The researcher triangulated findings from
the interviews and class observation.
4) They compare the answers from the
interviews and videos with the grades of
the students
Semi-structured interviews
=/= Surveys
Videos of the complete classes
=/= recording well-defined events
Observations
=/= Experiments
Qualitative
Research
 “Both teachers' testimonies and researchers'
observations showed that the performances
used were effectively adapted to the
students' age and that communicative
authenticity was achieved by using the
students' ideas and interests.”
It answer shows a characteristic of the
interviews practiced to the teachers.
 According to their teachers, as a result of all
this the kids improved their oral skills greatly
and learned how to interact with English-
speaking people outside of class.
It answer shows a characteristic of the
interviews practiced to the teachers and
those answer are verified through the
analysis of the videos.
 This research seeks discovering the
effect or impact of a curriculum that was
implemented in a particular bilingual
school, in order to solve a problem, which
was to develop and improve the bilingual
skills of its students. Therefore, the study
looks for finding a particular cause.
 This research can’t be considered an
experimental study.
Why?...
The new curriculum designed by teachers and
consultants was applied in the whole school, it
was not carried out randomization processes
which apply only to a particular group.
 This may correspond to an analytical observational
study, and a little more specific to a longitudinal study
due to was developed for a "period" defined time
(between 2008 and 2009) and involved working with
two blocks of information relating to the same
population (kindergarten), existing at the beginning of
the study period and the end of the existing period.
Another reason.
Although the consultants were involved in the creation of
the curriculum, were the teachers who implemented it
actively in the classroom with the children.

We could find after reading this article that it is
reliable and valid.
It has INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL VALIDITY
because the researchers have reported and
supported the results of this study, after make
comparisons, verify, check, prove categories, etc.
To add more validity, the impact of the
curriculum needed be evaluated quantitatively
through standardized tests after a longer period of
time. The part of the study they report on the article
was focuses on the learning of English of the
youngest students in the school.
3
questions
1. What communicative performances
did teachers carry out in English with
kindergarten students and how was
authenticity achieved in them?
2. How did the implementation of the
curriculum based on authentic
performances influence the children's
attitude towards the English class?
3. How did the curriculum based on
authentic performances influence the
children's learning of English?
This Research is Valid and Reliable, taking into
account that the method developed, not just tried to
control one biases of the research, but its goal in
asserts that to much of knowledge is time and
context bound, FOR THAT REASON THEY
implement the new curriculum at the same time
(2009 year) that the Study was advancing.
Adding more reliability, they make use of Audit
Trial, because the study describe with detail, how
the findings were derived from the evidence and
how was conducted the study.
Look at the following Example:
 They describe what the
students were doing in the
performances in the videos
and transcribed the
communicative
interchanges recorded and
the interviews; then we did
discourse analysis on the
transcriptions, looking for
specific information to
answer the research
questions:
characteristics of the
communicative
performances used in the
classes and evidence of
the children's attitudes
and learning.
This research can be applied in others context
or situations in teaching to very young
learners.
It achieved responding very accurately the
question proposed by the researchers, giving a
successful answer to the problem of this
bilingual school, in a countryside of the city.

Teaching-english-to-very-young-learners

  • 2.  The bilingual schools implemented a policy that are used in other countries in teaching and learning of foreign language  Is necessary take into account some aspects like: - Consider formalized learning of the foreign language quite later than preschool
  • 3.  The success of this learning depends on the real needs or wish to use the new language(s) in authentic communications (Snow, 2007) - Language is always the representation, transmission, and purposeful use of meaning in communication among interlocutors or writers and readers
  • 4.  The curriculum of the bilingual school was developed between English and Spanish teachers chosen by the school - goal: Designing some situed for the real communicative contexts in which their students moved in their lives - Characteristics: - it applies constructivist principles of human learning - Due to the free use of Spanish to help children learn english
  • 5. - Three contexts - daily communication - communication through the mass media - the communication necessary when approaching knowledge in different academic disciplines
  • 6.  This research was carry out in a private school in a mid- sized Colombian city with children of kindergarten.  The main concern is how to create a curriculum that integrates the use of English and Spanish (bilingual program) in the classroom using authentic performances in which the students could integrate their interest, lives and contexts with the use of a L2.
  • 7.  Mixed research - Qualitative research objective. - Qualitative and quantitative data collection. - Quantitative and qualitative analysis.
  • 8.  Groups: Two kindergartens' of 25 students.  Ages: 6-7 years old  Teachers:  Professional in International business  Professional in Children’s Education and psychology
  • 9. The impact of the curriculum on the first and foreign language development of the students. Learning of English of the yougest students What communicative performances did teachers carry out in English with kindergarten students and how was authenticity achieved in them? How did the implementation of the curriculum based on authentic performances influence the children’s attitude towards the English class? How did the curriculum based on authentic performances influence the children’s learning of English?
  • 10.  Data collections: The researches used different instruments to collect the information. › Semi-structured interviews conducted with the teachers of English and Spanish. › Videos of all the classes they taught. › Two videos that the teachers made where the students were making a performance in another class. › Observations › Grades
  • 11.  Data analysis and techniques: The researcher used the following steps 1) The researchers transcribed all the videos that they took in the classroom. 2) They analyzed the transcriptions, looking for specific information to answer the research question. 3) The researcher triangulated findings from the interviews and class observation. 4) They compare the answers from the interviews and videos with the grades of the students
  • 12. Semi-structured interviews =/= Surveys Videos of the complete classes =/= recording well-defined events Observations =/= Experiments Qualitative Research
  • 13.  “Both teachers' testimonies and researchers' observations showed that the performances used were effectively adapted to the students' age and that communicative authenticity was achieved by using the students' ideas and interests.” It answer shows a characteristic of the interviews practiced to the teachers.
  • 14.  According to their teachers, as a result of all this the kids improved their oral skills greatly and learned how to interact with English- speaking people outside of class. It answer shows a characteristic of the interviews practiced to the teachers and those answer are verified through the analysis of the videos.
  • 15.  This research seeks discovering the effect or impact of a curriculum that was implemented in a particular bilingual school, in order to solve a problem, which was to develop and improve the bilingual skills of its students. Therefore, the study looks for finding a particular cause.
  • 16.  This research can’t be considered an experimental study. Why?... The new curriculum designed by teachers and consultants was applied in the whole school, it was not carried out randomization processes which apply only to a particular group.
  • 17.  This may correspond to an analytical observational study, and a little more specific to a longitudinal study due to was developed for a "period" defined time (between 2008 and 2009) and involved working with two blocks of information relating to the same population (kindergarten), existing at the beginning of the study period and the end of the existing period. Another reason. Although the consultants were involved in the creation of the curriculum, were the teachers who implemented it actively in the classroom with the children.
  • 18. Natural context Researchers Role Immersion Studied in one specific case but open to adaptations in other contexts. Specific position constituted by a variety of perspectives. They direct the research study.
  • 20. We could find after reading this article that it is reliable and valid. It has INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL VALIDITY because the researchers have reported and supported the results of this study, after make comparisons, verify, check, prove categories, etc. To add more validity, the impact of the curriculum needed be evaluated quantitatively through standardized tests after a longer period of time. The part of the study they report on the article was focuses on the learning of English of the youngest students in the school. 3 questions
  • 21. 1. What communicative performances did teachers carry out in English with kindergarten students and how was authenticity achieved in them? 2. How did the implementation of the curriculum based on authentic performances influence the children's attitude towards the English class? 3. How did the curriculum based on authentic performances influence the children's learning of English?
  • 22. This Research is Valid and Reliable, taking into account that the method developed, not just tried to control one biases of the research, but its goal in asserts that to much of knowledge is time and context bound, FOR THAT REASON THEY implement the new curriculum at the same time (2009 year) that the Study was advancing. Adding more reliability, they make use of Audit Trial, because the study describe with detail, how the findings were derived from the evidence and how was conducted the study. Look at the following Example:
  • 23.  They describe what the students were doing in the performances in the videos and transcribed the communicative interchanges recorded and the interviews; then we did discourse analysis on the transcriptions, looking for specific information to answer the research questions: characteristics of the communicative performances used in the classes and evidence of the children's attitudes and learning.
  • 24. This research can be applied in others context or situations in teaching to very young learners. It achieved responding very accurately the question proposed by the researchers, giving a successful answer to the problem of this bilingual school, in a countryside of the city.
