Introduction Drawing on experience as a teacher and administrator in school districts in Virginia, Ronald Rodriguez serves as an educational consultant with Sustaining Academic Improvements, LLC. In this capacity, Ronald Rodriguez works closely with nonnative English speakers, helping them improve their language and communication skills. When it comes to teaching English as a second language (ESL), teaching strategies often vary considerably from traditional classroom education. At the most basic level, ESL education should involve hands-on learning exercises and creative activities, where students can explore the English language and integrate lessons in their own ways.
- 3. ESL Instructors should also take care to accommodate the needs of all students, whose English skills can vary widely. Because students already have command of a language other than English, ESL instructors often use visual lessons to create new connections between ideas and words. With enough repetition, students can solidify these new associations and begin integrating them into an English-language schematic. Teachers may also consider incorporating oral and physical response activities to help students retain new vocabulary.
