TEACHING AS YOUR VOCATION
TEACHING AS YOUR VOCATION
• “A man knows when he has found his vacation when he stops
thinking about how to live and begins to live” – Thomas Martin
• VOCATION – comes from the Latin word “vocare” which means “to
call”.
• Teaching is more that a noble profession. It is a vacation – a
calling.
6
CHRISTIANS caller is GOD
MUSLIMS called is ALLAH
 Believers in the SUPREME BEING will look at his
voiceless call to have a vertical dimension.
 Non-believers. The calls is experienced but viewed
solely along a horizontal dimension. It is like man
calling another man, never a Superior being calling
man.
“IF THERE’S A CALL THERE MUST BE A CALLED AND SOMEONE
WHO IS CALLED. THERE MUST ALSO BE A RESPONSE.”
Vocation is a strong feelings of
suitability for a particular career or
occupation.
Teaching requires dedication and
services in order for an individual to be
considered as a real teacher
 Joy is addressed as a teacher for teaching and
serving the children of a far rural community. She
travel almost 20 kilometer learning and
development.
 When someone is practice teaching as his vacation,
they teach with dedication.
 In summary, vocation is only for some who are really
dedicated not just to work but also to serve other
people.
9
TEACHING AS YOUR MISSION
THE ETYMOLOGY OF THE WORD MISSION
Teaching is also a mission. The word mission comes from the
Latin word “misio” which means to send.
You are called to be a teacher and you are sent into the world to
accomplish a mission, to teach.
 If you’re given a chance to be a chosen teacher
someday, what mission will you do?
10
TEACHING AS YOUR MISSION
Teaching as your mission means it is the task entrusted to you in
this word. If it is your assigned task then naturally you’ve got to
prepare yourself for it.
THE ELEMENTS OF A
PROFESSION
12
THE ELEMENTS OD A PROFESSION
Teaching, engineering, nursing and accounting are professional.
We the educators are the creator of all professional. Through
teaching, we are able to create the young minds into professional
ones also. The doctors, nurse, engineers, businessman will not
exist without the teachers who them to become professional.
What are the distinguishing marks of a professional teacher?
According to former chair person of the professional regulation
commission, Hon, Hermogenes P. Pobre, in his pithy address in a
national convention of educators remarked.
13
• “The term professional is one of the most arduous years of
preparation, a striving for excellence, a dedication to the
public interest, and commitment to moral and ethical
values”.
THE “PWEDE NA”
MENTALITY
VS. EXELLENCE
14
• “The striving for excellence” as another element of a professional
bring us to our “pwede na” mentality, which is inimical for
excellence.
• It is expressed in other wats like “talagang ganyan’iyan” “wala na
tayong magagawa,” etc.
• All of these are indicators of defeatism and mediocrity.
• If we remain true to our calling and mission as a professional
teacher, we have no choice but to take the endless and the “less
traveled road” to execellence.
“DON’T SETTLE FOR
LESS! STRIVE FOR
EXECELLENCE!”
16
Teaching may not be a lucrative position. It cannot guarantee financial security. It even
means investing your personal time, energy and resources. Sometimes it means
disappointments, heartaches, and pains. But touching the hearts of people and opening
the minds of children can give you joy and contentment which money could not buy.
These are the moments I teach for. These are the moments I live for.
