Comparatives
Comparatives in Portuguese are divided into three
forms:
Equality,
Inferiority
Superiority.
1. Comparatives of Superiority
Comparatives of superiority can be made usually with
adjectives. Sometimes you can use with adverbs and nouns
1.1 With nouns:
My son eats more fruits than my daughter do.

1.1 With adverbs:
My brother is older than I.
I can run faster than he.
2. Comparatives of Inferiority
Similar to the Comparative of superiority, the
comparatives of Inferiority can be made usually with
adjectives and sometimes can be used with adverbs and
nouns.
2.1 With nouns:
Less than (Menos que)
My daughter eats less fruits than my son do.
x SonDaughter
2.2 With adjectives:
 Less than (Menos que )
My brother is less fat than I.
2.3 With adverbs:
Less than (Menos que )
I can learn less quickly than he.
3. Comparatives of Equality
When things being compared have equal characteristics, the
comparison of equality is used.
3.1 With nouns:
Laura has as much money as Paulo.
=
• 3.2 With adjectives:
My brother is as fat as I.
• 3.3 With adverbs:
It is difficult for me to learn as quickly as I would like.
1. Superlative Relative
It occurs when the quality of a being is intensified in relation to a
set of beings. This relationship can be:
1.1 Superiority Superlative:
Giovanna is the most intelligent in a class.
She did not let
me see
1.1 Inferiority Superlative:
She is the least smart of all class. She is drawing.
2. Analytics Absolute
The Analytics Absolute Superlative may be formed analytically
also by using the adverbs muito (very),extremamente
(extremely), absolutamente (absolutely) etc. Prefixed to the adjective.
He is an extremely intelligent person.
3. Synthetic Absolute
The Synthetic Absolute Superlative is formed by a Latin adjective
plus the suffix -íssimo, -érrimo, -imo etc. prefixed to the adjective.
facílimo (easy)
duríssimo (hard)
paupérrimo (poor)
4. Special Comparative and Superlative
forms
In Brazilian Portuguese never use mais grande, mais maior, mais
menor, mais pequeno, mais bom, mais bem, mais ruim, mais mal.
Instead, you can say:
Maior (bigger),
Menor (less)
Melhor (best)
Pior (worse) .
