Jobs and condition of employment in the radio
industry.
 22,800 people are employed in the radio industry
 25% of companies have more than 20 people
working for them
 Radio has a highly skilled and well qualified
workforce of which almost two thirds are
graduates
 There is no direct route into the radio industry. And
22% of the workforce don't hold any qualifications.
 Having work experience is considered essential for
people who are trying to find a job in radio.
 Volunteer work is recognised by a lot of the
mainstream radios and you can find volunteer radio
work in student radio, hospital radio and community
radio. These are all good ways of gaining experience
and are all starting points to develop skills
 Number of UK employees – 22,800
 Number of UK employers – 350
 Gender – 52% Male
48% Female
 Age – 42% of the workforce is under 35 years
 Ethnicity – 7% of the workforce is from a Black,
Asian and minority background.
 Radio is going through a digital revolution which
has a profound impact on the industry
 Job vacancies are not generally hard to fill, as
there is no shortage of people wishing to work in
radio.
 However there is a concern regarding the
shortage of radio engineers
 The Radio industry workforce is divided into the
following occupational roles:
 8% work in producing
 10% work in production
 21% work in journalism
 25% work in Finance, HR, IT, Marketing and
General management roles.

  • 1. Jobs and condition of employment in the radio industry.
  • 2.  22,800 people are employed in the radio industry  25% of companies have more than 20 people working for them  Radio has a highly skilled and well qualified workforce of which almost two thirds are graduates
  • 3.  There is no direct route into the radio industry. And 22% of the workforce don't hold any qualifications.  Having work experience is considered essential for people who are trying to find a job in radio.  Volunteer work is recognised by a lot of the mainstream radios and you can find volunteer radio work in student radio, hospital radio and community radio. These are all good ways of gaining experience and are all starting points to develop skills
  • 4.  Number of UK employees – 22,800  Number of UK employers – 350  Gender – 52% Male 48% Female  Age – 42% of the workforce is under 35 years  Ethnicity – 7% of the workforce is from a Black, Asian and minority background.
  • 5.  Radio is going through a digital revolution which has a profound impact on the industry  Job vacancies are not generally hard to fill, as there is no shortage of people wishing to work in radio.  However there is a concern regarding the shortage of radio engineers
  • 6.  The Radio industry workforce is divided into the following occupational roles:  8% work in producing  10% work in production  21% work in journalism  25% work in Finance, HR, IT, Marketing and General management roles.
