Sri Lanka Genocide
Canada, a country known for its rich mosaic of cultures and people, it is uncommon for us to picture
the oppression and discrimination of any minority groups. Unfortunately, not all countries live up to
par with our human rights. Such as Sri Lanka, a small island located off the south coast of India,
surrounded by the Indian Ocean. This beautiful country beholds some of the greatest entities such as
its prosperous tea plantations. However, beneath this beauty lies a tremendous amount of corruption
and chauvinism. From the time when Sri Lanka received independence from the British colonies, the
population was split into two different cultures. The Majority being the Sinhala Buddhists while the
minority being Hindu Tamils. The government...show more content...
Upwards of seventy thousand Tamil civilians were killed and hundreds of thousands were
displaced (United Nations, 2000). Worldwide it is known as the May massacre and black July.
The systematic killings of the Tamils were considered genocide. The United Nations (2000) states,
that genocide is the " [perpetration of] violent crimes with [the] intent to destroy, in whole or in
part, a national, ethnic, racial or religious group"(P.337). The genocide against Tamils has been
going on for years and the Sri Lankan government has not been brought to justice. Till this day, the
surviving Tamil civilians are kept in concentration camps where many men, women and children
get tortured, kidnapped and raped. According to the Sri Lankan government, these camps were
made for rehabilitation purposes. David Keen (2014) states that the use of the camp is, "a dramatic
practical expression of the fact that the Tamil population as a whole was considered suspect in
relation to rebellion and terrorism" (P.10). Even after the genocide and the victory of the civil war,
the Sri Lankan government still has not done anything to bring equality amongst its population. Let
alone any sort of independence for the Tamil civilians. The newly elected President, Mahinda
Rajapaksha opted to take Sri Lanka down an authoritative road (stone, 2014). He has brought other
members of his family to governmental positions creating a permanent family line of
non–democratic leadership. The instability and corruption within the government will assure that the
Tamils will continually be

Native Language Essay
Language is universal. People voice their ideas, emotions, and thoughts across to the world through
language. Multitudes of people across the country speak a varierty of languages. However, a
foreigner is reduced to their native language, and sometimes has difficulties mainstreaming English
into their dialect. A nativelanguage is a foreigner's blueprint for the world to hear. Native language
gives homage to a foreigner's culture and home life. Native tongues open doors for education and
job opprutunities. A native tongue is translated in books and plastered on signs across the
communites. Imagine if language decreased to just English, and no another language existed.
People would mirror each other, and have no idea of diversity. So where...show more content...
Foreigners find comfort when using their native language at home. Also, people belittle a
foreigner's native language. Mujica reports a known politician in favor of adopting English as
the official language for the United States, and she felt the train of thought was dense (217).
Foreigners are singled out, for not comprehending English. Rodriguez recalls a gringo [American
or English person] rudely asking "What can I do for you?", Rodriguez sensed he could not adapt
to the gringos society, but stay safely tucked away in his Spanish society (213). Also, people make
a foreigner's native language feel too formal. Rodriguez describes the nun who introduced him to
his first classroom in his new academic career, and how her voice echoed with a dullness, while she
sounded each syllable of his Hispanic last name (212). Equally important, people insinuate English to
foreigners. Youngquist and MartГnez–Griego observed that many of the families at a local learning
center spoke Spanish, and limited English, and tried to teach English to their children. Instead of
helping their children learn English, it interrupted the learning development for both languages (92).
Peopl humble a foriegner's language. In addition, language barriers challenge a foreigner's public
life. Foreigners survive in the public limelight with only their native tongue to guide them. They are
forced to survive through broken English. For instance, Rodriguez

The Power of Language Essay examples
The Power of Language Language plays an important role in communication by bringing people
together and enriching their relationships. Language can also alienate those who do not speak it
properly, or at all, from those who do. The essays, Mother Tongue, by Amy Tan, best known for
her book, The Joy Luck Club, and Se Habla Espanol, by Tanya Barrientos, delve into the many
powers that language holds. These essays reflect how by not speaking a language in proper form
and by not speaking a language at all, affects the lives of the subjects of the stories. People who can
speak a certain language, but only in 'broken' form, are generally looked down upon by native
language speakers. In her writing, Mother Tongue, Amy Tan writes about her

However, many Hispanic families were and in some cases, still are viewed as lower–class citizens.
According to Barrientos, "To me, speaking Spanish translated into being poor. It meant waiting
tables and cleaning hotel rooms. It meant being left off the cheerleading squad and receiving a
condescending smile from the guidance counselor when you said you planned on becoming a
lawyer or a doctor" (561). They are not respected in a lot of communities, they live dirty, and they
have bad jobs. These stereotypes are reasons why Barrientos did not want to be called Mexican
and never wanted to learn Spanish. If diversity had been celebrated when Barrientos was a child,
as it is celebrated and honored now, she would have grown up speaking Spanish and being proud of
her heritage. Children are very impressionable and tend to take on others' opinions as their own, but
as they grow older, they develop a greater understanding and perspective of the way things are and
the way they should be. As adults, both Tan and Barrientos learned to accept and embrace the
languages that previously embarrassed them. Barrientos immersed herself in her Mexican heritage
and enrolled in many Spanish classes. With each enrollment, she faced yet another stereotype that
came with being of Mexican ethnicity; her instructors thought she should already know Spanish
since she was Latina. Barrientos is now determined to learn her native language. Tan has learned to

Semantics Essay
Language is the primary source of communication for humans and is used to convey thoughts,
feelings, intentions, and desires to others (Bonvillain 2008:1). Many rules are taken into account
when forming a language. According to Bolton, language is arbitrary and is unrepresentative of the
objects they represent (Bolton 1996: 63). The study of Semantics allows us to identify the meaning of
words and phrases in their literal sense, and helps us to make meaning out of arbitrary sounds and
phrases. It has been contributed to by both linguists and philosophers. Linguists used lexical
decomposition to understand the features that comprise words and the categories in which the words
fit. Philosophers dealt more with the meanings of sentences and...show more content...
Another occurrence is synonymy, which is when more than one word has the same meaning. An
example of this would be sick and ill. These two words both refer to feeling less than normal, but
to some these two words may have different connotations. By that I mean that some may see ill as
being worse than sick or vice versa. This can create a misunderstanding between speakers or
readers. Another example according to Parker and Riley is big and large. Referring to your sister
as big or large can make a big difference in how people view her; they could see her as being older
than you or as bigger in size (2010:30). Synonymy can also have differences based on formal and
informal settings such as the words woman and lady. This forces readers and writers of English to
choose their words carefully to make sure that the right meaning is conveyed and understood. Yet
another aspect is hyponyms. These are collections of words that go from general to specific terms.
This allows us to use terms to our liking and not necessarily in the most effective way for the
reader or listener to understand us. An example would be to say, "Please hand me a screwdriver."
This sentence is too ambiguous to elicit a precise action because there are many different types of

My Personal Language Essay
Personal Language History
Early years
I was born and raised in Mandalay. My parents came from Mandalay, Myanmar. They both are
Chinese so that I could speak two languages, Burmese and Chinese. I wasn't really good at
speaking Burmese when I was young. It took years to get me used to with it but then I moved to
Yangon which is the Capital City of Myanmar. My accent was getting better since I got Yangon. All
my neighbors were Burmese which helped me a lot to improve both my speaking and listening skills.
Educational impact
When I went to primary school, I had to learn Burmese. At the same time, I had to attend Chinese
School when the Burmese class is done. I had to take Burmese for official language. I had to take
Burmese for official language. As my parents and grandparents were Chinese so there was no doubt
that I can speak Chinese fluently. I never wanted to learn Burmese but I had to because my...show

Any kind of brands which are preparing to penetrate into the foreign market should do lots of
research in order to adapt the culture as well as the local market that is going to be entered and
expanded into. For instance, people will be making mistake about what does the slogan mean and
sometimes the logo because there were cases bout different kinds of company which are going to
internationalize their brand and they failed to.
There are cultural differences in every country. As the differences exist between the religion and
races, we should be mindful about the fact that every single word matters and it might deliver the
wrong message or implication to the customers. As the brand trying to internationalize it, there will
be several factors that should be considered for, which are including political and cultural and so on.
Internationalizing a brand might not be easy as it may seem, it would take tremendous amount of
effort to put

These are collections of words that go from general to specific terms. This allows us to use terms to our liking and not necessarily in the most effective way for the reader or listener to understand us. An example would be to say, "Please hand me a screwdriver." This sentence is too ambiguous to elicit a precise action because there are many different types of Get more content on HelpWriting.net
